#bionic reading

LIVE

Hey@staff can we talk about bionic reading?

because jester found out about it *yesterday* and stayed up all night and now it’s implemented into counter.social.  Like as an option, for those who want/can be helped by it.

Is this on your radar at all?  People there are loving it.  It’s helping them read faster, and more accurately.

ANNOUNCE: Yesterday I heard about something cool called ‘bionic reading’. I tweeted about it & a lot of folks were stunned. Today, 24 hours later, real-time 'Bionic Reading Mode’ is fully integrated into https://counter.social as a preferences option in our app & desktop browser.

Bionic Reading is a new method facilitating the reading process by guiding the eyes through text with artificial fixation points. As a result, the reader is only focusing on the highlighted initial letters and lets the brain center complete the word.
In a digital world dominated by shallow forms of reading, Bionic Reading aims to encourage a more in-depth reading and understanding of written content.

(and nah this isn’t me schilling for CoSo. I’m well aware it’s not the site for everyone.  dude just has great response and turnaround)

some of you may’ve heard about that fancy “bionic reading” typefont thats supposed to be easier for neurodivergent people to read (if you’re unfamiliar, it bolds the first few letters of each word to make it easier to follow)

well guess what, its locked behind a $500 a month API to write in because fuck you!

introducing, Not Bionic Reading! it is literally just the bionic reading typefont but for free. god bless neocities

anyone who can, pls reblog!

I’m not sure if this is actually proven scientifically, but I’m the example I saw it did seem to be useful or at least friendly?

Anyways, is great that there’s a free version, because accessibility shouldn’t be limited to the wealthy!

this shit is locked behind a $100 - $500 paywall, and it’s patented so no one can make an open-source version

torpedoread should be available as a free, bionic reading chrome extension soon, and beeline reader uses a different gradient technique thats free on iOS and only costs $2 a month on other platforms

please use those instead, don’t support paywalled accessibility

This isn’t locked behind a paywall, though. It says right there on the website that the converter is free, and using the API is free for up to 500 requests per day.

Does any other neurodivergant person find bionic reading make reading more difficult?

I hardly ever read stories bc it’s genuinely exhausting, but bionic reading just makes me read the bolded text and skip over the non-bolded text

A new type of typeface might be beneficial to neurodivergent readers! It's called bionic reading — the first few letters are bolded, making it easier for readers to glide through text and stay focused. (links in reply) pic.twitter.com/ssescp8smN — What in the ADHD? ⏲️ (@WhatTheADHD) May 20, 2022

Bionic Reading is a very interesting app which highlights the first bits of every word in a sentence

Bionic Reading is a very interesting app which highlights the first bits of every word in a sentence. Many people find that it speeds up their reading without losing meaning. It remains to be seen if the effect is real, but it’s certainly very interesting.
