“Ever get that feeling of déjà vu?”
Why I think that I’ve seen something similar to the new Rainbow Six Siege teaser before?
Oh, it makes sense now…
Gabriel Reyes has plenty reasons to be well and truly pissed off at Overwatch. He commanded them during the Omnic Crisis - and led them to victory. Not Morrison, as much as he’s said to be the heart and soul of the group. Reyes. Reyes was the tactical mind behind every mission, and he might not have had the same clean-cut all-American white male imago that Morrison did, but he got shit done. And it’s not like he was an asshole about it, either; he was besties with Morrison, who I don’t think would’ve befriended Reyes if he had been a dick.
And after the Omnic Crisis, what does he get for his efforts? A thank-you from the UN and essentially a demotion to Commander of Blackwatch. Tucked away out of the public view. And Morrison gets promoted to Strike Commander, because he looks good for the cameras. What the hell? Anyone would take that as a huge slap in the face, and it’s certainly not military practice to pander to popularity. Pure merit-wise, Reyes outranked Morrison. It should have been him who was made Strike Commander. Promoting Morrison because of his feel-good attitude and boyscout image was incredibly insulting to Reyes’ skill and leadership abilities. And more than insulting - it wasn’t in the best interests of Overwatch, either.
And isn’t that interesting? Overwatch was formed specifically to battle the Omnic Crisis. Once it was over, they found themselves without an immediate cause. Good people one and all, they decided to pledge themselves to making the world a better and safer place in general. The public loved them. They were victors, saviours, heroes.
But I think it’s naive to assume that everyone loved Overwatch, or the new goal they were setting themselves. Plenty of regimes, business empires and other organisations would have loathed the thought of a group of effective super heroes now having the time, opportunity and resources to meddle in their affairs. Dictators, CEO’s, political leaders. Powerful people with a vested interest in keeping Overwatch out of any less than savoury dealings.
