You stared at the box. An owl had delivered it that morning. Remus had gone with you after breakfast as you carried the box like it might explode. You set it on the floor of the Gryffindor common room and stared at it for a long time. Remus stayed with you until he had to go to a meeting with Professor McGonagall and Dumbledore.

Shortly after Sirius and James came up to the dorm room. Sirius was having a loud debate with someone who hurried towards the bedrooms, Sirius tailing them wanting to prove himself right. James smiled as he spotted you and hurried to sit down at the table near you. You remained on the floor, staring at the box.

“You’re going to have to use it. We have charms in fifteen minutes.” James said. He pulled his glasses off and rubbed them on his shirt, clearing away a smudge.

“I don’t like it.” You said childishly.

“You haven’t even opened it to have a look.” He pointed out. His glasses dangled from his fingertips and he tried to look as if he wasn’t squinting at you.

“Well. It isn’t my wand.”

“It is. Olivander sent it for you.” James pointed out.

“But I liked my old wand.” You grumbled.

“Your old wand broke. You don’t have a choice. Olivander wouldn’t send you the wrong one.” James smiled and you glared at him.

“This is your fault. You had to try and help Sirius climb the wall. Fell on my table. Of all the things he had to break, it was my wand.” You cross your arms and turn to glare at the innocent box.

“We said we were sorry! We even paid for the new wand. We now have ten minutes until charms class.” James grinned when you rolled your eyes.

“What if I wave my wand and nothing happens?” You asked.

“Nothing happens?” James answered quickly. You tossed a cushion from the sofa behind you at him. He chuckled as he caught it with one hand.

“We have class.” Sirius said as he came back into the room. He said it as if he had forgotten but made no effort to reach the door and slumped down on the sofa behind you, sprawling out. “Still angry at the wand?”

“No.” You said quietly.

“(Y/N)’s worried it wont work.” James answered for you.

“Have you even opened the box to look at it?” Sirius asked. You shook your head. “Well at least have a look before you reject it. Maybe the wand won’t want you. Hey! Maybe we’ll get to take a trip to Olivander’s and miss out on class. We could stay at the leaky cauldron.”

“Yeah! We’ll miss Divination. That’d be good, I forgot to finish my homework.” James said, sounding as gleeful as Sirius.

“You’re both terrible.” You said and gave them both an indignant look of disapproval before finally reaching for the box. You carefully slid the lid off, looked at the wand and then slammed the lid down again.

“Well?” James said. He had leaned forward in his chair in an attempt to catch a peak at what was in the box.

“It’s terrible.” You answered.

“Terrible?” Inquired Sirius.

“Dreadful.” You added.

“Dreadful?” James pressed.

“It’s treible, dreadful and garish.” You sounded upset now. Sirius and James looked at eachother, then at Remus who hurried into the room.

“You’re all late for class. The professor was worried something dreadful happened to (Y/N).” Remus said. He sounded slightly out of breath, as if he had run through the halls.

“Something dreadful had happened.” You mumbled while Siruis complained that something dreadful could have happened to him and James.

“What happened?” Remus asked curiously.

“Apparently (Y/N)’s wand is terrible.” James answered. You opened the box and picked it up. Half of the handle was gold, encrusted with jewels and on the end was the biggest green stone you’d ever seen. It was almost the size of your palm. As you held it up the wand shot several sparks and the ground erupted in a circle around you. While you let out a startled yelp and dropped the large and heavy wand on your foot, James pulled his wand from his jacket and started settling the flames until the only proof of the small fire was a small smouldering circle of carpet around you.

“It’s tried to kill me!” You wailed. Your eyes well with tears. One hand had several tiny burns on it and you hopped on one foot. Sirius fell off the sofa with a thump and let out a wheezed laugh as he tried to catch his breath, he clutched his sides and laughed loudly. Remus collected the wand, covering his hand with his sleeve and put it back in the box, being sure to hold it at arm’s length as if the wand might jump up and attack him of its own accord. James heroically lifted you off your feet and held you in his arms.

“If we take you to Professor McGonagall while you’re crying she definitely won’t make us go to class. You’re her favourite.” James said and grinned at you. He was clearly trying not to laugh. Once Sirius had regained himself a second time, having got to his feet and followed you all out to the halls, then divulged what happened to the Fat lady and broke down into a second round of laughter, the group trekked through the halls to Professor McGonagall’s office.

She looked dubiously at James and Sirius but when Remus dumped the culprit on her desk and she looked in the box she motioned you all further into her office and listened to what had happened. James set you down and you explained in detail what had happened. She eyed the wand the way she had once looked at James when he had made all the seaweed in the lake fly up into the air and rain down on the people eating around the lake during lunch.

“Mr Lupin, you better take (Y/N) to Madam Pomfrey. Mr Potter, Mr Black, you should get to Charms class. I will escort you and excuse your tardiness. (Y/N), Tomorrow is friday so I will inform the teachers you have class with that you have no wand. Mr Olivander is due to be visiting Hogsmeade on Saturday. I will write to him and ask that he bring a selection of wands so we can resolve the issue promptly.” Professor McGonagall rose from her desk and waved you off, following James and Sirius who dawdled along to their charms class. James glanced back at you, pulled a pitiful face, you smiled at him and laughed when Professor McGonagall swatted at his head and insisted that they both hurry up.

The bus across town was stiflingly hot. Everyone else seemed to have gone to the community pool or had stayed at home. The air was so hot that it seemed that the ground gave off almost as much heat as the sun beamed down on you. The sight of the mall growing taller in front of you made you sigh in relief.

As soon as the bus doors opened you hurried up to the end and stepped off. The temperature difference was refreshing but lasted momentarily and almost immediately you found yourself practically melting in the carpark. Hurrying to the doors you stepped through. The chill of the large buildings air conditioning crasessed the bare arms of your shirt, your long shorts allowed for the breezes of the air conditioning to tingle up your legs.

Strolling leisurely you waved to a few familiar faces, stopped at a few stalls that took up the long clean corridors filled with bustling people. When you reached Scoops Ahoy you smiled.

“Here yet again. You know you could get better ice cream from the store at the other end of the food court. They do it by the litre and it’s cheaper.” Robin said. You shrugged and looked over at the counter.

“I like the service.” You said and she chuckled.

“Steve!” She shouted. Steve opened the window in the back, saw you and grinned.

“Hey! You’re here.” Steve said as he hurried round to the door.

“Who did you think it would be?” You asked as Steve grabbed a paper bowl from the stack and leaned on the glass frame. A throat clearing behind you made you turn. Steve leaned so he could see around you.

“Them.” He said as he gestured to the line of children who had gathered behind you. “Give me one second.” Steve set the paper bowl down and gestured to the group. They followed him to the back and out through a side door.

“They’ve gotten so tall.” You joked when Steve came back.

“They grow so fast.” He said with a playfully wistful tone. “Still trying every flavour?”

“Totally!” You said with a bright smile. Steve counted the flavours and stopped over the one next to the flavour you’d had yesterday. “You know there’s a new movie out. It’s showing for the first time this evening, maybe we could go see it?”

“I dunno. I’ll probably just head home. I don’t feel like sticking around for a movie.” Steve said as he handed you your scoop and stuck a little spoon in it for you.

“Oh. Ok. I’ll see you tomorrow then.” You said trying not to sound disappointed. Steve agreed as he gave you a smile and took the dollar you slid across the counter.

“You really like your ice cream don’t you.” Steve said with a smile as he waved you off.

As soon as you left Steve turned. Robin was standing behind him with the whiteboard in hands. She had written, in bubble writing, ‘you’re an idiot, she was asking you out on a date.’ Steve stared at the whiteboard before sighing.

“No.” He said.

“Why do you think she comes in here for ice cream? For twenty dollars she could get a litre of every flavour we carry from the stall by the escalator. It’s not for the overpriced ice cream.” Robin insisted. Steve’s face fell and he closed his eyes for a moment.

“She’s been coming every day to see me?” His eyes opened and Robin made a face as if it was obvious.

“What’d you think she liked the decor? Go and see if she’s still outside!” Robin shooed Steve out to the front of the store. Steve looked around, catching a glimpse of you walking towards the exit with Nancy.

************************

You’d been disappointed about missing out on the movie. Nancy had offered to go with you but when you had explained what happened and that you didn’t feel like going, she moved off the subject and onto something she had been investigating. It distracted you while the two of you got lunch to go and went to a grassy area and ate until the heat was too much for either of you. You had headed home and filled your mom in on what happened. While you said you were embarrassed that Steve turned you down she insisted that you should try again when the opportunity came up.

A car horn beeped outside. It went off a second time and you curiously went to look out of the window. “Who is it? If that neighbour is…”

“No Mom, it’s Steve. Maybe I dropped something at the mall? I’ll go out and see what’s wrong.” You called back to her. She didn’t say anything as you hurried out to Steve’s car.

“Hey. I was wondering if you wanted to catch that movie? They have a late showing.” Steve said as he rolled the window down.

“I thought you didn’t want to go.” You said quickly.

“I urm. Thought about it and decided I wanted to go.” Steve said awkwardly.

“Well… Sure. I’ll go ask.” You smiled at him before hurring away. Heading inside you asked to go to the movies. After finding out the pamphlet that had come through the door a few days prior you found the movie you were going to see and promised that it was Steve who would be going with you. After being given change for the phone at the mall doors and promising to call after the movie and let your mom know when you were on your way home you headed back outside.

“So looking forward to the movie?” Steve asked as you got into the car.

“Totally. My cousin saw it when it first came out. They said it was amazing. They had it two weeks before Hawkins.” You said with excitement. Steve smiled as he turned off your road and towards the mall. You tried to steel your nerves as you took a deep breath and let out a long slow one. Steve kept glancing at you as he drove. There was an awkward silence that started to fill the car that hung there until he parked at the mall. There were a few stragglers dressed up for the late night viewing of the movie heading inside.

“I’m glad we’re going. To see the movie. The two of us.” Steve said awkwardly as he parked and looked at you.

“Me too.” You replied with equal awkwardness. The two of you stared at each other for a moment before he nodded and opened his door, getting out. You let out a shaky breath and got out as well. Walking to the cinema together you both stayed quiet until you were queueing.

“I’m glad…” Steve said but stopped.

“It’s nice to hang out together.” You added. You both nodded and were grateful to be called up to the ticket booth.

“Get in!” Natasha yelled. She had spotted Yelena running up a side road. As Yelena climbed into the car, Natasha started driving up the road. She could see someone on a motorbike following them. “Do you have an explanation for why you’re on the hit list of the guy who’s currently hunting down Avengers?”

“(Y/N).” Yelena said as she looked out of the back of the car. The bike was getting closer but Natasha turned sharply and a car passed the road, forcing the bike to continue.

“(Y/N)?” Natasha repeated, sounding somewhat in disbelief.”

“She lulled me to sleep and then she went rogue.” Yelena ducked as the bike came out of nowhere and her window was shot out.

“Yelena you’re the best assassin for your age and you let (Y/N)… what… trick you or something? You’re sure this was (Y/N)?” Natasha wasn’t sure what was going on. All she knew was Yelena needed to be extracted so she came to help.

“(Y/N) had a meeting and then the place she was going got blown up. She called me and said get out of the apartment which blew up just as I got out. I grabbed the go back but I found this.” Yelena opened the bag she had with her. At the few glances she spared the item in Natasha’s hands she sighed.

“That… that is the thing that was powering the suit of the guy sent to kill the Avengers.” Natasha said as she spun round another corner and sped across a long open stretch of road. She saw something above the car and watched as a gold and red object dropped around the bike, sending a shock through it, knocking the rider off.

“There’s no way (Y/N) has anything to do with that.” Yelena insisted. Natasha slowed the car and stopped, glancing at Yelena dubiously. “There is no way someone that small and clumsy could be dangerous.”

“She has vanished, blown up her home and gave you the thing powering a suit worn by one of the most wanted men in the world. Yelena it’s stupid to not assume that (Y/N) is involved.” Natasha got out, gun drawn and approached the crumpled person on the floor. Tony lowered himself into view.

“There is no way that (Y/N) is involved.” Yelena snapped. Natasha sighed, glancing at Yelena who stomped over, yanked the bijker to their feet and pulled the helmet off. Upon seeing who the biker was, Yelena let out a sigh. “For a moment I thought you were (Y/N).”

“(Y/N)’s dead.” He said. Yelena dropped him and looked at Natasha.

“That is not true! She phoned me after.” She insisted. Natasha nodded.

“I believe you but we need to get this guy somewhere we can interrogate him.” Natasha said quickly. She muttered something to Tony who nodded. After he made a call several black cars arrived. Yelena followed Natasha to a car, reluctantly. Once she was inside she hesitated.

“Yelena. This is Fury and Maria.” Natasha said quickly.

“We managed to find the last time any camera saw (Y/N).” Maria said after a quick nod to Yelena. Yelena snatched the tablet Maria was showing them and carefully watched the video.

“Did (Y/N) mention anything to do with their job? The new boss?” Fury asked.

“No. (Y/N) is not part of this. There is no way.” Yelena said calmly. She got out again, slamming down the tablet and storming away. She ignored Natasha’s phone calls and instead wandered around places that you’d been recently. It was getting dark by the time she considered finding Natasha and asking if she could stay the night. She cut through the old bookstore that you liked. It was now a mix of old building and new, instead of knocking it down after the battle of New York the owners fused the old building with new stronger materials leaving a contrasting looking building. Yelena liked the building for its many exits. One out the back that led to a small garden with steep stairs that cut down to a small street of tiny shops. The front led out to the main street and there was a large window in the hallway to the bathroom that could be pushed open and you could step through, vanishing into a side street. She had commented several times that she would go there to lose someone. As she cut through the back and smiled at the weary shop owner, from the corner of her eye she caught sight of someone reading. There was a small bookshelf, tall and thin. If you were to squeeze between it and the wall you could find an old ladder that would have been used for a grand bookcase. The ladder led to a small snug space almost entirely out of sight.

“(Y/N)! People are looking for you.” Yelena said as she pushed through the gap and climbed up the ladder. She rolled her eyes when you set the book down and hugged her.

“You were meant to meet me here hours ago.” You scolded Yelena. She gave you a look of disbelief and found words failed her. “We said if there was an emergency we should meet here. Our apartment blew up.”

“You are right. We should get you out of here.” Yelena said after a moment. You followed her out and pointed out the way to the bus stop. Yelena wasn’t sure it would be safe but relented when you insisted you’d be fine. After several minutes of waiting Yelena noticed someone watching the two of you from what had looked like an empty store front.

“I don’t see anything.” You muttered.

“This is my job. To notice these things. We should go, something is wrong.” Yelena insisted. You glanced around but saw no one around. With a hesitant sigh you agreed and followed Yelena. “There’s a safe house not too far. There is a little food, water, weapons. Nothing else.”

You didn’t say anything but followed her. As you neared the safe house, according to Yelena, you could feel the prickle of someone watching. It made you nervous. You assumed Yelena felt it too as she made you double back several times but with each loop the feeling seemed to close in. Yelena led you through a maze of alleyways then up to a rooftop. You paused when you threw a grappling hook over the side of the building and turned to you.

“I can’t.” You insisted. She rolled her eyes and motioned for you to be quiet. You felt something clip to you then you were pulled against Yelena who swung the both of you onto the side of the next building. She grunted as she took the brunt of the hit, colliding with the wall and pulled the both of you up the rest of the way and then rolled onto the roof, releasing you as she did.

“There’s a satellite phone in the air vent over there. It’s only number is Natasha’s. Stay low.” Yelena said as she caught her breath. You tried to stay low, freezing when a red dot hovered over your shoulder. Yelena crawled across the floor and tackled you. The two of you landed, Yelena on top of you as a shot cracked the air. You held up the phone, panting a little.

“I got it.” you whispered.

“Great.” She whispered back. She took the phone and dialled for Natasha. “Follow me.” She whispered. She slid round to the other side of the air vent and helped you do the same.

“Yelena?” You heard yelling through the phone.

“Shh. I have (Y/N). Someone just tried to shoot her. We’ve been trying to lose them for over an hour.” Yelena said quietly.

“Can you stay where you are?”

“We don’t have a choice. They’re good.” Yelena answered. You sat perfectly still and stared at a scuff on Yelena’s new boots. She hung up the phone and shoved it into a pocket inside her coat. The two of you sat together. Yelena tried to figure out where the shooter had gone while you tried to stay as still as possible in case they were still nearby. You jumped when something rocketed overhead. Then the door to the roof burst open. You watched as someone twriled through the air and drew fire.

“Come this way.” You turned and found Natasha running your way.

“You really brought the Avengers out to save us?” Yelena said sarcastically as she gripped your arm and pulled you along with her.

“You were right about (Y/N). We found footage of her uncovering the boss’s secret. We need to get you out of here. There is a Stark jet waiting to take you both to Saint Petersburg. From there it’s up to you to keep (Y/N) safe until it’s safe.” Natasha explained. You stumbled a little and Yelena glanced at you.

“We’ll be fine.” Yelena said. Though to whom it was debatable. An armoured car pulled up as soon as the small group guided you through the building and out to the street. While you found yourself sped to the airport and bundled onto the plane, Yelena took a moment to talk with Natasha. You watched the hug from the plane window before Yelena turned to get onboard and yelled at you for being next to the window. The plane was self driving and landed at several airports before stopping in a small airport in Saint Petersburg. You and Yelena disembarked and watched as it took off almost immediately.

“Where do we go now?” You asked her.

“You don’t need to worry. I have a place we can go. But next time you plan on taking on a crazed, wanted, millionaire. Give me a heads up so I don’t almost get blown up?” Yelena said to you. She smiled when you sighed and agreed. She started leading the way through woods, trees and large fields. After a while a farm came into sight. “Well. We’re here.”

Waldo Weatherbee walked calmly into the class. The buzz of chatter quieted as he scanned the room, the class waiting to see who was going to be snatched up by the latest of Riverdale’s dramas. After a few moments he pointed at Reggie. “Mr Mantle. With me. Now.” Reggie sighed as he stood up. He headed out of the class room with curious eyes fixed on him.

“What did he do?” Archie whispered as a new buzz of chatter took over the class.

“I heard he broke something in the library. Weatherbee is making him show the new student around that’d transferring today.” Kevin whispered back.

“New student? Only one? Maybe it’s Jug?” Betty said. Veronica reached over to give her arm a sympathetic squeeze.

“He would have said.” Archie pointed out.

“No need to worry my dear chums. I imagine I’ll have all the deets by second period and can fill you in.” Cheryl said from behind the small group. She smiled sarcastically as they all looked at her.

Out in the hallway Reggie was being filled in on his new duties. He was to babysit the new transfer student. He tried to object but Weatherbee pointed out that after the stunt he’d pulled recently, that resulted in the school hall being trashed, he would either show the new student around or be kicked off the football team. Reluctantly Reggie agreed and was led to Weatherbee’s office. He stayed by the door while Weatherbee stepped into the room.

“(Y/N). This is Reggie Mantle. He’ll be showing you around today. You have the same classes.” Weatherbee explained to you. When you looked over your shoulder to give Reggie a friendly but nervous smile you hesitated. Reggie was scowling at the floor. “You have everything you need? Time table, we’ve gone over everything… is there anything else you would like to talk about?”

“No Sir. Thank you. I’m all set.” You said politely. Reggie scoffed a little and rolled his eyes as you shook Weatherbee’s hand and turned to leave his office. You followed Reggie out into the hall. He didn’t wait or acknowledge you as you shuffled your backpack and plodded along after him.

“I’m (Y/N).” You said as you hurried to catch up with Reggie. He ignored you and continued to walk through the halls. Every now and then he would point to a room and say what it was. You tried to jot down a rough map with a notebook and pen once you realised that Reggie probably wouldn’t help you again, once he felt he’d completed the task that had been forced on him. The tour was short and you felt that you managed to get to grips with the layout, though you would definitely end up getting mixed up with some of the corridors.

At one point he opened the door to a classroom. Several curious faces stared at you. Then he was off again, showing you the gym, auditorium and then finishing with the cafeteria as the bell for lunch rang. As soon as Reggie spotted someone across the room he left you. Clearly your efforts to make friends had failed. Sitting at a table by yourself you sighed and opened your backpack. When you closed it you found a red headed girl smiling at you from the other side of the table. You jumped a little, having not heard her sit down.

“You must be (Y/N). I’m Cheryl, the only name you’ll need to remember around these parts.” She said confidently.

“Oh. Yeah. I’m (Y/N).” You said awkwardly.

“Have you been living in our fair Riverdale long? Did you move from the city?” She pressed.

“Not… not long. My mom isn’t from here. I grew up in her hometown. But my Grandpa used to live across town but he bought a house not far from the school he rented it out until he was too old to take care of it. He passed away a while ago. My dad decided to move the two of us to town.” You explained. Cheryl’s smile tensed and she leant forwards.

“Across town? As in the southside?” She said the southside as if it was a dirty word. You frowned.

“Yeah. I guess… I didn’t realise it was such a big deal. We’re planning on fixing up the old house and renting it out. We’re moving into the house on Elm street.” You said hesitantly, unsure why Cheryl had tensed up.

“Oh. That’s where you live B!” Another girl said as she and a blond girl approached the table. “I’m Veronica. This is Betty and that hunk over there is Archie. You live on the same street as Archie and Betty.”

“Oh. I think your mom came over to greet us. She gave us potluck. I’m pretty sure that she implied that she thought my Dad murdered my Mom.” You laughed a little and Betty gave you a sheepish look.

“I’m so sorry! She gets these ideas and totally runs with them.” Betty said and laughed as she and Veronica sat down. “Did Reggie cover the school? With his tour.”

“Yeah. I’m pretty sure I’ve got everything down.” You said as you reached into your bag for your lunch box.

“Will you be trying out to be a vixen?” Cheryl asked suddenly.

“Excuse me?” You answered.

“A cheerleader. We’re all on the team.” Veronica explained.

“Oh. I’m not really into sports so I probably won’t be.” You said, trying to be dismissive without being rude.

“Oh.” Was all Cheryl said.

Within a week everyone knew everything about you. At least that was how it felt. You fell in with Midge Klump and Ethel Muggs. The two of you had a study group that was so successful you managed to recruit a few people into joining. Cheryl, Betty and Veronica did little more than greet you if they passed by in the corridor. Occasionally you’d walk home with Betty and sometimes Archie as well but you did little more than wave to her across the road. In fact you spent more time with Archie’s father. Fred had been meeting with your dad to discuss the work that could be done on the two properties. They seemed to be familiar with each other. After pressing you found that he had gone to primary school with Fred and a few of his friends before your grandmother moved out of town with your dad.

Nothing much happened to you and your friend for a few months. There were whispers of drama that sounded so outlandish that you didn’t pay much attention.

On one morning Weatherbee interrupted the gathering in the study room. “(Y/N), could I have a word outside?” He didn’t sound irritated or upset but you nodded, gathering your things and leaving the room. Reggie watched carefully as you left the room. He often found himself looking out for you. Archie said he must have a crush on you but he always denied it.

“What can I help you with Sir?” You asked. Weatherbee’s face turned stern for a moment.

“I was wondering if I could assign you as a tour guide. You’ve not been here long and I thought you might be able to help the new students transition. I can give you a letter towards your college application.” He waited for you to take in what he said and smile slightly when you agreed.

“Of course Sir. Who will I be showing around?”

“We have several students from the southside school joining us in a matter of minutes. There are a few I thought you could help. Toni Topaz. Sweet Pea, Fangs Fogarty and Jughead Jones. Now Jughead used to go here so I imagine that he will fit back in.” Weatherbee excused himself as someone walked down the hall towards him. You went to wait at the front doors. Ethel waved at you as you hurried over.

“Have you heard the news?” She asked.

“Yeah. The other school has some students transferring.” You muttered as the two of you waited.

“No! The school was shut down. There was a drug ring under it. That guy Midge was hanging out with told her.” Ethel said excitedly. Both of you looked up to the speakers at the top of the wall as Weatherbee announced that the Southside school students would be joining the school. There was an explosion of activity. People shouted and argued about the news. Students suddenly flowed everywhere as you and Ethel waited. There was a lull as Veronica and Archie set up a table down the hall from the door.

“(Y/N)? Are you waiting for someone?” Veronica asked curiously. You showed her the slip of paper with the names of the new students on. She nodded and muttered something to Archie. “We’re setting up a welcome desk. If you want to help we can find the students you’re showing around in a moment.”

“Sure.” You said as you followed Archie to the copier room.

“You know Jug and I grew up together. We’re friends. He used to go here.” Archie said cheerfully.

“Oh so I won’t need to show him around?” You asked curiously.

“No. But he’ll probably let you, just to be nice. That’s Jug.” Archie said. He handed you a stack of class schedules and the two of you headed back to help Veronica finish up. The Southside students arrived shortly after that. Most were clad in the same leather jacket and some of them seemed impossibly tall. Veronica called them over to the welcome table and you tried to smile and look friendly. A few people in the corridors seemed to be staring or glaring their way.

Veronica welcomed the group and started to list what she had at the desk. Some looked uninterested at the things on the table while the one at front smiled slightly as if relieved at the welcome. Veronica was cut off by a sharp voice behind you. Turning you saw Cheryl, a group of Vixens and a gathering of the football players. Reggie was among them. As they got closer he made eye contact with you but glanced away rather quickly. The tension built quickly but you missed what was said as Reggie seemed to barge you away with the southside students and backwards in the crowd that had gathered. Jocie and Kevin, who had been quietly observing, were quick to help you find your feet as you stumbled backwards and tried to steady yourself. By the time you’d pushed your way back to the front of the crowd Archie had stepped in.

“That’s enough! Those of you that have assignments please help the new students get organised, everyone else to class.” Weatherbee said. People slowly started to disperse. Looking around you saw Ethel had found her group and was handing them sheets of paper from Veronica’s table. Archie said something to, who you assumed was, Jughead. He looked your way, nodded and grabbed a few sheets of paper from the table and said goodbye to Veronica before heading over.

“I’m Jughead.” He said as he held out his hand.

“(Y/N). I’m your assigned buddy.” You said cheerfully. It was hard to remain cheerful as the largest of the crowd had followed Jughead and was staring down at you.

“This is Sweet Pea.” Jughead added when he followed your gaze.

“I’m Toni, this is Fangs.” Toni introduced. She smiled when you looked down at your list and counted them.

“Well, it’s nice to meet you all. I’m showing you around this morning and then you have classes after lunch. We have the same classes so I’ll be around. Oh and my friends and I have a study class. We’re pretty full but Weatherbee said if we can get six more people to join we can move to a bigger class room. So, feel free to sign up.” You said with a cheerful smile. It was easier to be chipper with Sweet Pea glaring at Reggie. You hadn’t noticed that Reggie had been lurking down the hall. He beckoned you over. “Um. One second.”

The group stopped and watched you head over to Reggie.

“You don’t have to show them round.” Reggie said.

“Weatherbee asked…”

“Yeah, he can’t make you do that and Jones knows his way around. You don’t have to hang around with them.” Reggie insisted. You frowned at him then looked back at the others. Toni was scowling with her arms crossed. Jughead was watching you curiously while the other two did their best to look intimidating.

“Why wouldn’t I want to show them around?” You asked. Reggie sighed.

“Look. I’m just trying to keep an eye out for you. They’re from the Southside.” Reggie seemed irritated that you didn’t understand why that was a big deal and sighed, stomping off. You slowly headed back over to the group.

“People here are really weird… sorry. I mean it’s great here.” You said quickly.

“Yeah. They’re a little off. Some of them.” Jughead said with a grin.

“It’s kind of like the Stepford wives. Anyway let’s start the tour or Weatherbee will come back and send us to math class.” You said with a friendly gesture. You led the way through several corridors. The group seemed politely interested but like they would rather be anywhere else. Jughead even managed to show you a few places you hadn’t found. “Do you guys like snakes because of the grass snakes?” You asked as you started to wrap up the tour.

“Excuse me?” Sweet Pea said.

“Oh. Well my granddad used to live on the Southside and we’re fixing up his old house to rent and there’s grass snakes everywhere. I was just… I just assumed, you’re all wearing snake jackets and… well the grass snakes. I assumed you were big fans.” Your voice grew less and less confident as you spoke. Sweet Pea and Fangs laughed and nudged each other while Jughead and Toni tried to hide their smiles.

“We’re big snake fans.” Sweet Pea said.

“Oh that’s fun.” You said with a smile and headed towards the gym. Once you showed them around you headed to the cafeteria. The bell rang and you gestured to where you liked to sit. Jughead showed you a table that was tucked right out of the way that you hadn’t noticed before. They said goodbye to you and headed to Jughead’s table while you split off to catch up with Ethel and Midge.

The next few days you found that Sweet Pea, Fangs or Toni would come to you to help them find their way if they couldn’t find Jughead. Once they knew their way around they would wave if they saw you in the corridor. Even Sweet Pea would crack a smile as he saw you coming. They joined your study group, though you suspected that Toni was the only one studying. During a busy weekend working on the Southside house with your dad they showed up with a few friends to help out.

“Hey! (Y/N)!” Sweet Pea called. Reggie had been talking to you about giving the Bulldogs special treatment in your study group so that none of the players with low grades would be dropped from the team.

“We’re busy.” Reggie snapped.

“Oh. Really? Didn’t look like it.” Sweet Pea said with a snide smile. The smile turned gentle as he turned to you. “You have that basketball hoop on the side of your old house?”

“Yeah?” You asked suspiciously.

“Well, some of us were wondering. If we helped out at the house again. Maybe you could ask your dad if we could use it to practice. I was thinking of joining the basketball team.” Sweet Pea sounded smugly happy when he said he’d join the team.

“We don’t need you on the team. The team has me.” Reggie said. He glared at Sweet Pea who looked at him calmly.

“I don’t think he’d have a problem with it. As long as you don’t break anything. He’d be happy for the help too. I’ll ask him tonight and let you know.” You said quickly. Sweet Pea nodded and waved a little as he went back to where Fangs and Toni were waiting for him.

“He’s terrible. At playing basketball. You should come down to the practice tonight and see.” Reggie said irritably.

“Oh really? Maybe I will.” You said snidely. Reggie panicked for a moment but shrugged it off.

True to your word you showed up and sat with Toni as you watched the practise. Sweet Pea managed to barge Reggie off his feet a few times. You flinched as he grunted and collided with the floor.

“You know that they’re competing?” Toni asked.

“Well obviously they’re on different teams.” You said. When Toni didn’t say anything else you glanced at her and found her laughing quietly to herself.

“They’re competing over you. He wouldn’t admit it but Sweet Pea likes you. Reggie is always watching you and he gets really upset when you hang around us. It’s more than the whole Southside, Northside thing. They both like you.” Toni watched as your eyes went wide and then you let out a low, drawn out.

“Ooohhh.” You nodded and glanced back at the basketball court. “That explains a lot of stuff.” You both laughed and watched until the end of the game.

“You’re going to have to pick which one you want or they’re going to get in a fight!” Toni teased you as their practice came to an end.

Warnings: mentions of blood, implications of blood drinking, talking of a vampire attack, needles, injections / medical injections

“He’s evil.” Steve said. You sighed and leaned against the wall.

“He’s a vampire now. It’s not like he can…” You started to defend. Max sighed, having enough of everyone debating if they should help Billy or not.

“I think Billy is a good guy but at the end of the day, they’re still a vampire.” Will said quietly. He cleared his throat and added. “As good a guy as a bully can be. It isn’t his fault a vampire got him. It could have been one of us.”

“I know we all have different feelings about him but we should maybe… you know we could save him before he eats someone. What was the point of figuring out how to catch him?” Max asked loudly. Her tone made everyone go quiet and stop bickering.

“You’re right.” You said finally. Everyone else agreed.

Your house was the furthest out of town out of the groups. Seeing as your family had gone away for the weekend and you had asked to stay behind, no one would drop by. The plan was to lure Billy there, hit him with the weird goopy injection that El and Jim had seen used on another vampire and then get him, unconscious into your basement den where Billy would be cured by the second injection that Joyce and i’m were trying to get while all of you gathered to decide if going ahead with the plan was a good idea.

“What if he goes crazy?” Mike asked.

“Super crazy…” Dustin muttered.

“I’m sure I can handle him.” El said as she walked across the room to Max, patted her on the shoulder and led the way out of the house.

“Plans on then.” You muttered and followed them. Steve sighed and went with the boys through the back way of your house. El and Max went ahead, your front key clutched in Max’s hand. You dawdled behind. It took twenty minutes to walk from Steve’s house to yours. Which meant it was plenty of time for a rampaging vampire to notice you and follow you back home. After fifteen you felt the prickle of being watched. Your skin tingled and blood rushed in your ears. While your body told you to hurry away and reach your house, you steeled your nerves and made sure to keep your cool.

“(Y/N).” You heard Billy call. You turned. He was maybe ten steps away. You haven’t heard him walking behind you. Max and El were already inside, unable to hear anyone else outside you assumed the group had gotten into their position.

“Billy! Where have you been. Everyone was so worried.” You said sweetly. The smile on your face pulled awkwardly at the corners of your lips. The pounding of your heart would give you away if you couldn’t steady your nerves and convince him that everything was fine. While you told yourself, it’s just the same old Billy, your body knew the presence of a predator.

“You were worried about me?” He asked. He smiled at the thought and took another silent step closer.

“Yeah. Why won’t you come inside? We can call… someone, tell them that I found you.” You tried to look innocently excited that he had been found. Jim arrested a man for attacking people, found he was from the lab in town, then had to deal with vampires popping up everywhere. At the very least Jim, Max and Joyce had been worried that Billy had gone missing for two weeks. Jim was worried he’d been eaten and there was no chance to save him. He watched you carefully as you held out a hand as if to take his and lead him inside. His large hand swallowed yours as his fingers closed around your own hand. His hand wasn’t cold. You’d expected it to be. But it wasn’t warm either. Rather it was the same temperature as the air around you. He followed you inside, quietly and with a confused sort of dazed look about him, like a lost child being returned to a frantic mother. When Steve slammed the door behind you both, he jumped. Billy jumping caused Mike, Dustin and Lucas to step back. Will watched him wearily with a golf club as a weapon clutched in his hand.

“What’s going on?” Billy asked, snatching his hand back. He turned, his face twisted, eyes glowing and fangs bared. You stumbled backwards and he followed, drawing forwards. Steve hurried to tackle him and they grapp;ed on the floor. The phone rang as the two of you tried to grab hold of Billy so Max could give him the fist injection. Will hurried to answer it.

“They got it! They got it and it worked on the man in the hospital. They said to keep Billy here and that they’ll be here soon!” He called out from the hallway. Containing Billy was easier said than done. He was already fairly strong but now he had vampiric strength and seemed able to detect when one of you planned to strike. Steve grabbed at Billy’s legs, taking him down to the floor again as Billy thought he had finally pulled away. You writhed forward and grabbed at Billy who looked at you in surprise. He let you hold onto his arms without fighting back.

“Billy it’s ok!” You insisted. His face slid back to his human form and he frowned at you, still fighting but seeming to believe you as he fought less and less. Max saw her chance, hurried forward with the needle and hit home. Billy yelped as the plunger of the needle was pushed and Max backed away. You pulled it out, yelling for El and Mike to bring the chains. You and Steve wrapped Billy in them and the group helped heave him down to the basement.

“Will he be ok?” Max asked.

“Sure. Joyce and Jim are on the way. That stuff will make him a little loopy but I think he’ll be fine.” You assure her. She and the younger few left to go and look out for Joyce and Jim while Steve sat on the basement steps, to make sure Billy didn’t escape. You sat on the sofa with Billy. He was sniffling.

“I didn’t even see him. The guy. Just bit me and left me all bloody.” Billy mumbled. You weren’t sure what to say. You hadn’t ever been faced with the prospect of comforting someone after a vampire attack before. Unsure what else to do you took his hand and let him clutch it tightly. His eyes told you he wouldn’t fight. Even if Steve thought he was trying to trick everyone into thinking he was docile. It wasn’t long until the cavalry arrived and Joyce and Jim joined you.

“This is going to hurt. But you’ll be almost completely normal.” Jim said.

“Almost. That’s not very encouraging.” Steve said from behind the basement sofa.

“He’ll have some slight aversions to the sun. You’ll be stronger, able to run faster… this was some sort of experiment to see if they could make some kind of super strong soldier.” Joyce explained.

“It doesn’t sound like it’ll cure anything. Are you sure it works?” You asked her. Joyce nodded.

“This. How he is now. It’s stage one of four. The injection will freeze him at stage one and take the edge off the symptoms. Believe me. You don’t want to see stage four.” Joyce gave you a firm look and you nodded, not wanting to know anymore. Billy didn’t fight or complain as Jim carefully injected Billy with the serum and you turned away. You could feel him clutching your hand harder and harder until you winced. Once it was done Joyce pried your hand from his and led you away. Jim and Steve unbound Billy and left him alone in the basement.

There was silence for a long time. No one said anything as the group gathered in your living room sitting down and hoping things would work out alright. But once the screaming started everyone was up on their feet again. Max, who had sat next to you, clung to you, her face buried in your side and each scream Billy let out, her body tensed.

“I’m finding that fucking scientist that let that monster out of the lab. I’m not backing down Joyce. I know he threatened…” Jim said, breaking the silence of the room. Joyce agreed with him. You all spent the night up in the living room, holding onto Max who clutched at you as if she couldn’t stay seated without your support. After a few hours Billy went quiet. Then when you listened carefully you could hear quiet sobs. Once dawn came Jim cracked open the basement door. You followed him down. When Steve tried to stop Max she batted him away, insisting on going with you.

“Billy?” You said in a whisper. He was laying on the floor, breathing softly. Joyce hurried to check on him.

“He’s sleeping. After what he went through it’s no surprise. We should get him to the hospital.”

“We’ll go.” Max answered and looked at you. You answered with a firm nod as you stared down at a peaceful Billy in the ruins of your basement den.

You waited in the small pub just outside of Small Heath. There had been gunfire and shouting. Men running back and forth. No word had been sent by Tommy but you still followed through with his plan to meet you at the train station.

“This is ridiculous. We should go back to London.” You sister chastised. She had come along to meet the family you had married into. The rest of your family disapproved and wouldn’t come. By the way she was acting you assumed she had only come along to voice her disapproval in person.

“It’ll all be fine. It always is. He has a way of being fine.” You said calmly as you sipped your drink. You had been served at the table you chose, the crowd around the bar had been abandoned by the bartender who rushed to serve a Shelby lest something terrible happened in the pub.

“He’s like a cockroach. Always survives.” Your sister said with a touch of irritation. She had put her handkerchief down on her seat before sitting. She pulled another from her bag to clean the glass she was served and then set her bag on her lap where she clutched it. You had someone at the train station take the bags and keep them locked in the office so that someone could be sent to fetch them later, they of course agreed, your sister complained and insisted that you would be robbed. You felt there would be no point explaining no one would rob a Shelby.

“I’ll ignore that.” You muttered as you sipped at your drink. She scoffed, refusing to touch the drink beyond cleaning the glass. Both of you turned to the door when someone stepped in and the pub fell silent. “Tommy!” Getting up you hurried over to him. He was tucking his gun under his jaket. He embraced you as you reached him and looked over your shoulder to your sister who was giving him her hardest stare.

“The man who shot at me looked more friendly than you sister.” Tommy muttered.

“Be grateful she is the only one who came. There is fury over the secret wedding we invited them to, which they all refused to come to. They tried to introduce me to someone when I was up there. They’ve been informed I will not be going back until we have an apology. I think she came back with me to convince me to go back to my parents home.” You filled Tommy in. He chuckled and nodded as he listened, you had warned him that something like that had happened. He and his brothers had taken bets on the whole ordeal.

“I think I’d rather take on another gun man.” Tommy said but smiled as he approached your sister. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“I imagine it is.” She answered curtly. Looking to you, she added. “Will we be getting out of this place?”

“Of course. I just need to make a phone call.” You excused yourself and left the two of them together as you asked the bartender for the phone. Dialling for Ada you informed her that your sister was behaving the exact way you had assumed and that she should go ahead and give Polly the ok for her plan to dazzle your sister with lavish decorations, food and company. Ada laughed as she hung up. When you made your way back to them you found Tommy and your sister stood in awkward silence.

“Are you going to continue to stand in the doorway?” Peter said with his eyes closed. He’d been reading a book Derek asked him to find. Derek had left for some sort of McCall drama.

Finding his eyes falling shut Peter decided to take a moment to close them and lean back on Derek’s sofa. When he woke from shortly dozing off he became aware of someone lurking by the door. When you finally opened the door Peter realised it was you. He smiled to himself as his voice broke the silence and startled you.

“No.” You said quietly. Peter remained with his eyes closed. If you weren’t here to bother him then he had no need to open his eyes or even sit up.

“No? So why’re you here?” He asked.

“We found out that this weird guy is involved with the big monster things and I said that I would talk to them and I was wondering…”

“If I would do it instead?” Peter opened his eyes and looked at you. He watched your eyes go wide and you shook your head.

“No, no. no. it’s just that, I know that you like torturing people and i am totally up for that.” You answered quickly. Peter smiled and sat up as you cleared your throat and added. “I tried earlier but… they’re pretty big. We also don’t know who is attacking people so I just figured it would be safer if I had some help.”

“So you wanted someone to keep you safe?” He sounded as if he was taunting you a little.

“Yes. My instincts told me that it was safer to have someone come with me to avoid being attacked by a mysterious monster.” You said and frowned at him. He smiled and relented. You waited for him to stand up, fetch his jacket and head to the door with his keys in hand.

“Shall we get going then?” Peter asked. You let out a relieved sigh and hurried out of Derek’s home to follow him down to the car park.

  • You’d begun your travels with your aunt and had been relieved to see someone that you knew.
  • While at a ball throw during your visit to a family friend you bumped into Colin.
  • You were relieved to find someone that you knew as many of the family friends, and their children eager for a match, had only written well wishes and never met you in person.
  • You and Colin visited several museums, restaurants and gardens.
  • While you took classes in the arts Colin had gathered a rowdy group of friends to spend his days with.
  • For a while your travels followed Colin’s plans but after a month you were scheduled to return home.
  • He promised to write to you as he saw you off.
  • He kept his word and several letters would arrive each week. According to Bendatic and Eloise they had received two in the time that you had received twenty letters.
  • While Colin wrote about his adventures you filled him in on what was happening while he travelled, you filled him in on all the drama at home, sending him a stack of Lady Whistledown’s, with each letter.
  • During a luncheon Eloise informed you that Colin would be returning home, he hadn’t, however filled you in on it and wondered why he hadn’t told you.
  • Penelope had informed you later on that same day that Eloise thought Colin had decided to come back home three weeks early because he realised that he was in love with someone back at home.
  • Assuming it was Penelope herself, you remind poliste but on the day of his arrival you found that he had arrived at your home to see you before he had even gone back to the Bridgerton house.
