A while ago, I drew all these puppies for American Girl Magazine, which are stickers in their May/June issue. They sent me copies of this issue by surprise. I didn’t even expect that or even knew these were out! Drawing these dogs for them was a great opportunity!

OMG.  

Thor the bulldog is officially the best boy in America. This fine, chunky specimen claimed Best in Show at this year’s National Dog Show, beating out more than 2,000 other good boys and girls from more than 193 breeds to claim the prestigious prize. 

Thor, who at 2 years old weighs in at 60 pounds, was described by American Kennel Club-licensed judge and NBC co-host David Frei as a “beautiful hunk of a dog.” But Thor’s not all looks ― Frei also said he had a “great temperament.” 

Thor’s handler, Peruvian Eduardo Paris, described the bulldog as a “sweet dog and very athletic.” “You should see how high he can jump,” Paris said. “He loves to play with his kennel mate Chihuahuas, and he has beautiful construction. I think that’s why he won.”

It is often said that the Pit Bull breed/s are often aggressive because of how they are raised, the human is % at fault due to lack of socializing, training and positive impactful experiences.

I agree that socializing, training and foundational positive experiences to someone raising one of these dogs is of utmost importance but there are dogs that genetics plays a role in how they interact with other animals.

.

.

As previously stated in my past post that “Pointers point, Retrievers retrieve” and this behavior is generally attributed to genetics, it is not hard to believe that a fighting breed like the APBT will inherently want to fight other dogs since it is a huge part of its genetic make up.

.

Dog fighting is the United States was officially outlawed in 1976, that’s 45 years ago and from someone that’s been in the dog game my whole life I can personally tell you that it has not stopped the many dog men who continue
to roll their dogs. Many Pitties are what dog men consider “scatter breds” a term meaning a dog of unknown origin/lineage but these same dogs can continue to pass along an animal aggressive trait generations to generations later.

As in any industry, there is always competition and its no difference in the dog training community. Even after 30 years training dogs I still gets whiffs of shit talking but I let it roll off.

“We may walk the same path but we got different shoes” so on that note, Big Ups to all the trainers doing it right. Take pride in your craft as there is not many of us doing it and even less doing it right!

Another Bulldog breed has popped up for the masses to gobble up. The Shorty Bull was created by crossing French Bulldog, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and of course English Bulldogs. It’s been around for at least the last couple decades but slowly making lots of noise due to its small stature but high energy and of course it’s uniqueness.

In 2007, Isaac’s Moby Dick of Blue River received his IronDog III title and completed the 12 mile endurance run which is no small feat in itself, something many Bulldog breeds haven’t reached. The Shorty Bulls weigh in at 40 pounds or less and measure 15” or less at the shoulder.

The Catahoula Bulldog originated over 100 years ago in the southern US. The Catahoula Bulldog is created from a direct cross between two specific breeds: the Catahoula Leopard Dog and the American Bulldog, with the selection of the breeding parents being dependent upon desired working ability, rather than appearance. The Catahoula Bulldog is the result of combining two well suited breeds to gain certain characteristics that you may not get by leaving the two separate. They were originally popular in the southern United States for their strong working abilities for tasks including hunting, working stock and protection.
