Foundation; an underlying basis or principle.

.

Nothing can be built correctly without a proper foundation, and in bite work it is everything. What YOU see is a pup doing what YOU may deem natural but what isn’t seen is the time, effort and foundational work to get this young dog to this level.

.

In bite work training, proper foundation work will make your dog prosper. Taking shortcuts will only cheat your dog of reaching its greatness.

.

Just as important, don’t let finances be the difference of training with a competent trainer versus someone out to make a quick buck. It ain’t always about the money but remember “cheap dog training ain’t good and good dog training ain’t cheap”

In order for our dogs to have long and comfortable lives we must train them to coexist in our world.

.

.

New dog owners operate under the assumption that their dogs would just learn them and do what is expected of them. This is not true new dog owners.

.

.

Someone taught you to drive a car, tie your shoes, do your job. Agreeing to this same ideology with your dog will you begin to understand that dogs need to be taught what is expected of them.

.

.

Invest time and money if need be to train your dog early on to do the job that you expect of them. Your future self will be glad that you did so.

This post is for those who’ve asked if I know about Cane Corso, their history or how to train them. I’ve even been told that I mispronounce the name. This is for you….

.

.

Yes in fact I do, I trained my first Corso in 1991 before the ICCF (International Cane Corso Federation 1992) began registering them. The dog was from one of the original breeder/importer of the Corso dogs to America, Micheal Sottile. Since 1991 I’ve trained and owned over 50 plus Corso.

.

.

I’ve trained Corso’s to be functional family pets, protection dogs, even a dog that was used as a service dog but never accredited. I’ve also been a part of several breeders in helping them create their lines as well as choosing dogs that would eventually become the foundation dogs for registration through AKC

.

.

My question to you is do you know Cane Corso?

Everyone has their favorite breeds and mine, cause of my vast experiences with dogs is for sure the “rare breeds” or as they are classified today “miscellaneous”

.

Now you could bring me a Poodle or a Dalmatian and of course I can train it but it’s the working dogs, utilitarian breeds or as I call them “breeds of purpose” that excite me the most to work and get the best out of them.

.

But let’s go back for a second and touch on the rare breeds. Back when I began, (very few!) trainers knew or had the experience to work with Presa’s, Corso’s, American Bulldogs, Boerboel’s, Tosa’s to name some of many rare dogs. Today these breeds have become popular and even mainstream but I still feel that trainers don’t know enough about them.

.

With all of this being said, I enjoy training all breeds but will always be partial to the working breeds and rare dogs.

“We may walk the same path but we got different shoes” so on that note, Big Ups to all the trainers doing it right. Take pride in your craft as there is not many of us doing it and even less doing it right!

“I don’t see how they can hate, when they ain’t put the time to train”

.

.

A Protection dog should be balanced and connected to his owner. It is not a dog that is tied to a tree and given a bite on a sleeve years beyond its expiration date. To achieve this time, patience and consistency as well as proper training is needed.

.

.

Mistakes are going to happen but what and how you deal with them makes all the difference. In training, we have to allow them to happen, it’s how you correct a dog. Shout out to those trainers doing the job correct and not always for money.

Wow what a find, @troychurchill9 sent me this a couple weeks back and I just remembered that I have it. Let me set the picture up of what you’re looking at.

From left to right…..

.

Al Baneulos with Ike, second American Bulldog in breed history to receive a Schutzhund title.

Leri Hanson with Scud Missile, APBT receiving his Sch I title

Dan Guerra with Berringer, brother to Scud also obtaining his Sch title

myself, with Hammer the third American Bulldog in breed history to obtain a Sch title. I believe this is in 1991. I helped in training and developing all four dogs here. This was some fun times.

.

Thank you Troy for this find. I appreciate it, will be reaching out to all of these guys soon.

Eye contact. One of the most important things to teach your dog is to be able to get eye contact, get him/her to look at your face during different situations. Some dogs focus too much on other unimportant stuffs, we want them to focus on the leader as we are the ones leading, not the car on the road nor the stray cat in your neighbourhood.

I turned 27 this weekend. I got an air fryer for my birthday (adulting is cool) and finished off my Inuyasha DVD collection. I spent it with great friends at my most favourite place, the cottage. I was spoiled with good memories lots of laughs, drinks and a sunburn. Today however is another special day as we celebrate the one year of our pup Riker joining our family. It’s his first gotcha day!! Today was emotional as I reflected on his journey from 9 weeks old to a year and 3 months. Having a puppy is truly like having a baby. There is ups and downs, wins and fails, learning curves, eating, accidents, both physical and potty training. They need constant supervision and a safe space to thrive. I have personally owned 3 dogs before owning Riker. Family dogs if you will. One a collie Shepard, 2 a red nose pit bull, 3 a German Shepard husky. All with their challenges and perks to training and owning. Riker is a Norwegian Elkhound, a rare breed in Canada. He is also one of the most stubborn breeds I have ever worked with, that being said. He is also the most rewarding. As a puppy he was the easiest to train. When he reached 6 months it is normal for his breed to regress in training. It is important to understand 2 things with this breed. 1) they do not respond to harsh punishment. And will most likely become more reactive. Ignoring bad behaviour or simply redirecting the behaviour with high value treats or toys is the best way to see behaviours you want to see and lessen behaviours you don’t want to see. Number 2) socialization from a young age is SO important. Norwegian Elkhounds are very protective of their humans and their space. They can be very skeptical of new humans and animals. That being said they have a high prey drive but socialization of small animals from a young age can help combat that. & Can also help with leash reactivity and being too territorial. The best advice I can give with any breed is consistency and patience.

Positive training is the way to go! Dominance theory has been disproven by science and it HURTS your relationship with your dog.

That is the key…remembering you have a relationship with your dog. Instead of getting frustrated, think about the emotion and connection you share with your dog. Start training from that place and you will not hurt them. You will help them far more than any simple obedience command.
