Charles Durning and Burt Reynolds in 1981 Sharky’s Machine.

Being a chubby man lover myself, I always believed Burt Reynolds was like me in that way. Here is the scenario that I believe took place when they filmed Sharkey’s Machine in 1981. The only other film they did together was Startig Over in 1979 and Charles was much plumper. I added the last photo  of True Confessions which was the film Charles did before moving on to work with Burt again in Sharkey’s Machine to show the big round man Burt was expecting. (Although Charles did film a TV movie in between in which he did show signs of weight loss).I believe Charles, knowing his next film was with Burt, spent a few months at a Hollywood “fat farm” and hid it so he could irk Burt and revealed it to him on film in their first scene together. Starting at photo one, Charles sits behind a desk and waves Burt in. Burt walks in cautiously, suspecting something is up. Charles stands up for the great reveal, showing Burt that he has lost a lot of weight just for him and Charles is giddy about it. The scene works with the characters because I believe it was written that way intentionally. Charles’ character is gleeful that Burt’s character has joined them against his wishes in Vice. The 8th and 9th photos are only a few months later at the Sharky’s Machine Premiere and look how much Charles has gained in that time. Burt must have been wining and dining him the whole time between filming and the Premiere.

“You’ve just witnessed opportunity, if not knocking, at least scratching plaintively on a closed door. Mr. Julius Moomer, a would-be writer who, if talent came twenty-five cents a pound, would be worth less than car fare. But, in a moment, Mr. Moomer, through the offices of some black magic, is about to embark on a brand-new career.”
