My girlfriend and I have a Dream backstory theory I want to share:

It relies on the theory that the revive book works by the person doing the reviving needs to know the deceased in order to revive them perfectly. (I explain more on that later.)

The theory starts with Puffy being Dream’s mom, but has forgotten she is after her ship wreck wiped her memories. Dream grew up on Puffy’s ship and was with her up until the ship wreck.

Back when she was a captain, Puffy’s personality was drastically different. She ruled over her crew with an iron fist, being cruel to her mates and even crueler to her enemies. This is where Dream could have learned his more brutal and manipulative behaviors. It could also explain why, when he ruled the dream smp, he was so strict and commanding. From a young age he was taught that that’s how a leader leads.

But, the the shipped eventually crashed. My girlfriend and I came up with the horrible idea that it was actually Foolish that attacked and crashes the ship. As we know, he used to be a more deadly god. Not only that, but he’s the god of the sea, with the power to control lighting. He could have controlled the storm that ship wreaked Puffy. Not to purposely kill Puffy or attack her ship (as he didn’t know her back then) but maybe just as another mindless murder from back when he was a totem of dying.

Anyway, the ship crashes and kills the whole crew and Puffy herself. The only one to survive was Dream. Perhaps this is why Dream has such a god complex. Being the sole survivor of the crash could have wrapped his mind into thinking he was some sort of chosen one.

Jumping forward in time, Dream eventually gets the revive book from Jschlatt (this theory might also explain why he wanted the revive book in the first place) and the first thing he does with it is revive his mom. But, since it’s his first time, he kind of messes up and Puffy is revived with amnesia. Not only that, but Dream revived her with the idealized version he has in his head of his mom. Because I’m using the theory that the reviver needs to know the person in order to revive them, Puffy got revived with the personality Dream thinks his mother had. That’s why Puffy is so nice and motherly now, when she used to be cruel.

(Btw, this is not to excuse Dream’s actions at all. It’s just a cool thing for his character that my girlfriend and I thought of. And also it was just to give Puffy and Foolish some angst if they ever find out about it.)
