This is not about clothes. This is about cheap products that seemed promising or that I’d heard good things about, but that suck. Or at least, suck for me. YMMV and all that.

  • Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

Every time I pick up a magazine, some makeup artist is suggesting this. I don’t get it. It does nothing for me. My lashes are barely anything thicker or longer than they were before I used it. Darker, I guess. But like I’ve said before, I think mascara’s quality and effectiveness is highly dependent on the person using it. This might be right for your lashes, but it’s not for mine. There’s no universal mascara that is perfect for everyone, in my experience.

Whatever you want to call it, it’s fucking awesome. AND EASY. And cheap, of course.

I already directed you to this video tutorial a while ago. If you didn’t look before, do it now. Do as I say. DO IT.

In the video they use all sort of expensive shit to do this. Fuck that. You can do it for cheap.

  • Instead of $25 Lorac eyelid primer, get the $1 e.l.f. shit.
  • Instead of $20 Laura Mercier eyeliner in Black Turquoise, get the $6-7 Milani liner in Blackened Teal. (Ignore the glitter on the other end - it’s crap. Don’t expect to get two products out of this, and you won’t be disappointed when only one is useful.)
  • Instead of $15 Mac Club eyeshadow, get the Wet N Wild Color Icon palette in Comfort Zone for $5, and get 7 other awesome shadows along with it. Use the bottom right shadow for this look.
  • Instead of $23 Givenchy black eyeliner pencil, use whatever black eyeliner pencil you want. Seriously. It makes no fucking difference.

Today I’m just going to write about some of my favorite cheap makeup. Some of these I’ve posted about individually before, and others I haven’t. They aren’t all necessarily revolutionary and life changing, but they are are good and reliable and useful. These are the products I tend to use on a daily basis and that I keep buying when I run out.

This is a long one, so get ready.

  • Monistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel (as primer), $6

Here’s my previous post about this one. I just got a sample from Sephora of Lancome LA BASE PRO Perfecting makeup primer. It costs 42-fucking-dollars a bottle. It looks, feels, and even SMELLS identical to this Monistat shit. I haven’t compared the ingredients, but I’ll wager it is exactly the same. Do not waste your money on that nonsense, or I will have to hunt you down and kick you in the taint.

These are my favorite eyeshadows by a fucking mile. They come in threeandeight shade pans (as well as singles, which I haven’t tried). The ones I own are:

  • Comfort Zone (8)
  • Silent Treatment (3)
  • Walking on Eggshells (3)
  • Cool as a Cucumber (3)
  • Don’t Steal My Thunder (3)
  • Sweet As Candy (3)

Comfort Zone, Silent Treatment, and Walking on Eggshells are my favorites, but the only shade out of all of these I was disappointed by was the darker brown in Sweet As Candy. It wasn’t as pigmented and smooth as all the others. ALL the others are wonderful. Here’s what I had to say about Comfort Zone in particular, recently.

Blue suede shoes for $25 anyone? (They’re real leather. Also in tan and black.)

I want them, but only the tan are in my size. And I think the heel is probably too high for me.

Just painted my nails with Spoiled by Wet N Wild in “Good Karma”. It’s a beautiful duochrome/multichrome polish. I guess it’s the latter, because it shifts from green to teal to blue. It’s really amazing. More range than most of those China Glaze duochromes that came out this fall, even. And a good formula: 2-3 coats.

(Image from LUUX.com.)

And it’s $2! But I would recommend opening the bottle and checking out the brush in the store. Spoiled brushes can be shitty. Make sure you find one without any extra-long or stray bristles.

Well, maybe badass is a little but of an exaggeration. But badass in terms of how much they will not fucking let go? Yes!

(Note: I got a set of these for free to review in my Influenster box. But I already had some that I’d bought a few weeks previous and was planning to review. I’m very happy to have spares now.)

These things are awesome (and usually under $6):

These knotted hair elastics:

Oh, please, may I spend $10-15 on some stretchy ribbon?

Or I could buy 3 yards of it for less than $3 and tie my own knots in it. If I really wanted to.

(And do people really wear these on their wrists?)
