I haven’t seen the supposed mysterious parse comic so my take on his arc might be lacking BUT-
I think that from what we’ve seen of him, Parse is the product of being queer in sports without fundamental support or an outlet. He’s playing one of the most homophobic sports professionally and grew up in that culture.
I think that both him and Whiskey care more about being big in the sport than about being a gay icon (as ngozi put it in that one extra), but the difference is that while Whiskey had Bitty who had his back, Parse didn’t have that.
Even to the comics present day, people were aware of and in dialogue about Jack and Kent juniors. Parse was both in and out with his identity and never on his terms. This is something fundamental that Bitty gives Whiskey which i think was a main point to their Dibs exchange.
Both Whiskey and Parse come from non-excepting backgrounds, had to have their queer attractions and relationships kept secret and probably under a veil of shame, and both of them have to do this for the sake of their personal goals.
The difference is that Whiskey has a Bitty. This is where I think they foil each other and where I think their parallels begin to drift off..
Whiskey is I think what Parse would be is Kent went to Samwell instead of Jack. Did the whole college to pro arc that clearly Whiskey is headed on.
In the last few updates of the comic, there has been a clear emphasis on the impact of the individual as well as the setting.Samwell gave Bitty, but also clearly Jack the space and people to foster positive development. Even though he doesn’t end up coming out or being completely open, Whiskey’s arc ends hopeful that he’s on his own path to discovery and growth. This is because of Bitty and Samwell in general! Remember, Whiskey says that Bitty had his back!
Parse is what happens when you don’t have the proper support or conditions to develop on your own terms. Parse is what happens without Bitty and Samwell.
Not to like, make Bitty into some sort of divine figure, not what I mean at all! Also, I am fairly neutral on Parse, I understand why people hate him and I understand why people project all over him. Mostly I don’t think he’s a villain, I think he’s a foil. Anyhow if anyone has more thoughts please! Add away!!
