Drabble request #37-@cumberbucky 3. Modern AU, Chris Beck x reader: “Wanna dance?” “Quit staring! They’ll notice us!”
The way Beck smiles at you from across the ship fills your tummy with butterflies. You have to keep looking away, hoping that your grin isn’t a dead giveaway to your feelings towards your fellow astronaut. Lewis was reading a book over on the couch, Martinez and Vogel played a board game not too far from you. Nobody is paying attention to the looks you and Beck are sending each other, but you’re still cautious. There’s some music playing in the common area. It sounds like a compilation of swing music, jazz, and classical. Whatever. As long as it’s not Lewis’s 70’s music, you can handle it.
You look back to your book, but can’t concentrate. You can feel Beck’s eyes on you; but you do your best to ignore the way your insides squirm with excitement. You read over the same sentence three times, still not retaining it, when someone clears their throat in front of you. You glance up at Beck, who’s smiling sweetly with his hand outstretched towards you. “Wanna dance?” He asks, smile only pulling wider as you curl your lips between your teeth to prevent your own grin from taking over your face. You glance over to your crew members, then back at Chris, who simply plucks your book from your hands and sets it down beside you before pulling you up into his arms.
You giggle at the action, hoping the others don’t hear it or notice you blushing up a storm. Beck leads you to an area with a little more space, a little further away from the others. He takes your hand in his and the other glides down to the small of your back, holding you close. Your hand snakes around to the back of Chris’ neck and you do your best to not play with his hair that brushes against your fingers.
You chew on the inside of your cheek, trying to look anywhere but Beck’s impossibly sweet and soft face. He’s leading you in slow circles, silently begging you to look at him. The moment is so fragile and beautiful, you’re scared to breathe and break it. Beck leans his forehead down to touch yours momentarily before pulling back up to his full height. The action forces you to look up into his sparkling blue eyes. “Quit staring!” You hiss, trying to hide your smile. “They’ll notice us.”
Chris smiles and it’s so breathtaking, you can’t help but smile, too. “I’m pretty sure Lewis already knows. Martinez, too.”
Anxiety starts to build in your chest and your smile fades from your lips. “We’ll get in trouble. NASA–”
“Can’t do anything. We’re all the way out here on Mars.”
You try to be the voice of reason. “Chris–”
“I don’t care. They can do whatever they need to if they find out. But I know how I feel about you, Y/N. I’ll risk anything to keep you.”
He leans down and presses his forehead against yours as your other crew members look on with smiles on their faces at your little display of affection.
