Close ups and progress gif of my Frozen/Big Hero 6 xmas card!

Sometimes I chop and change a lot of things while drawing, but this card was drawn almost completely in one go - guess it just wanted to come to life!

I am so pleased to be able to share my geeky christmas cards with you for the third year running! It’s become my Christmas tradition and this years set has to be my favourite so far.

Cards (and plenty of other goodies featuring the pics, like mugs and cushions) are now up for sale on Redbubble!

Hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed obsessing over every last detail like Thorin’s Smaug slippers and holding the arkenstone which is wearing a hat to keep it warm, and yes luke has a tiny R2Ds and yes that is a reindeer on Davros’ jumper and handmade patterned socks on John and nobody will ever see close enough to know that there’s a letter S on the present Harry is sending to Sirius of course and that Peter has little stars on his christmas sweater or how obviously that dalek learned cookery out of a 1970’s recipe book…and, well… just baymax being adorable.

…I mean, as much as I enjoyed drawing them :)
Merry Christmas!

Reblogging because I couldn’t resist doing one last card.

Search your feelings…you know it to be Yuletide

Poor old Darth, he just wants to be a cool dad and make sure to get his kids the right presents. Han knows better than to write a list, he’ll just take what he can get!

I can’t believe this is the 3rd Christmas Star Wars card I’ve drawn and I’ve managed to stay away from the old “I have felt your presents” joke. That’s gotta count for something, right?

The Mystery of the Missing Advent Chocolates

Plot Twist: It was Mrs Hudson.

Extra Plot Twist: It was Moriarty!

(all of this is double bluff - actually, it was really was Sherlock.)

I like to think that the next year, John bought Sherlock an advent calendar all of his own and bet Sherlock that he didn’t have enough self control to do it properly day by day…

…and was right.

Groot’s First Christmas

A Marvel Charlie Brown mashup!
I’ve love to see A Charlie Brown Christmas re-enacted with Marvel characters…though Groot is probably going to steal the show of whatever scene he’s in…
Amazing how putting a jumper on Rocket suddenly makes him look so cuddly…

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through Erebor…

This illustration really ought to be called “Spot the reference” because I tried to cram so much into the picture! Examples include: Kili’s archery patterned blanket, Bofur’s tin whistle, Bilbo’s pony Myrtle, a pot of tea for Dori and of course, the robe colours of the dwarves are featured on their blankets (though sometimes tweaked a little to keep the pic from being only blue and brown!)

Mischievous Magical Merriment

This was the first card I drew, because to me, Harry Potter and Christmas are absolutely a perfect match. The christmas chapters are so cozy - especially the ones at Hogwarts.
(Poor old Snape - don’t worry, the rest of the teachers are just out of view, also making snow-creatures)

A Doctor Who Christmas Party!

I thought it would be nice to upload my geeky cards as separate posts, so to include some close up details and a gif showing the working process!

I had an awful lot of fun drawing this card, but I did have a minor freakout once I started and realised how many characters I was going to be drawing!

Rejected ideas included:

  • 8th Doctor lighting a christmas pudding…and accidentally also a time lord’s robes (still visible in the sketch)
  • 9th doctor making banana daiquiris
  • Amy and Jamie doing a highland dance…got to save that for another pic, I think…

A Brief History of Christmas Cards

The Christmas card industry was started in Britain in 1843, three years after the Penny Post had been introduced. The first Christmas card was of a family drinking wine together. The early Christmas cards did not focus on Christmas, instead they largely featured pictures of fairies and flowers or children and animals. Cards began to be produced in America in 1875. Official Christmas cards for the British Royal Family were started with Queen Victoria in the 1840’s but it wasn’t until 1953 when the White House followed suit. Christmas cards served an extra purpose during the World Wars, as they became patriotic. The cards have changed over the years, to become more Christmas oriented and even humorous. Whilst Christmas cards still make a large profit for the card industry, the number of cards sent has decreased with the rise of the internet and better social connections.
