Jackie “Moms” Mabley (1894 - 1975) #AfricanAmerican #comedienne and actress. She came out as a #lesbian in 1921. Mabley was one of the most successful entertainers of the Chitlin’ circuit and was the first female comedian to appear at the Apollo. She was earning US$10,000 a week at Harlem’s Apollo Theater at the height of her career. She recorded 20 albums and appeared at Carnegie Hall. Whoopi Goldberg made her directorial debut with the documentary Moms Mabley: I Got Somethin’ to Tell You. In 1974 she starred in the movie Amazing Grace.
