Stormé DeLarverie (1920 - 2014) the Black #butch #lesbian who was rumoured to have kicked off and started the #Stonewall riots. She was reported to have shouted “Why don’t you guys do something?” as she was manhandled into the police wagon handcuffed and this sparked the fight back. In the 1950s and 60’s she was a drag king performer in the Jewel Box revue. Michelle Parkerson made a documentary about her called Stormé: The Lady of the Jewel Box. photo Diane Arbus
“I, Mabel Hampton, have been a lesbian all my life, for 82 years, and I am proud of myself and my people. I would like all my people to be free in this country and all over the world, my gay people and my black people.” (1902-1989)
Jackie “Moms” Mabley (1894 - 1975) #AfricanAmerican #comedienne and actress. She came out as a #lesbian in 1921. Mabley was one of the most successful entertainers of the Chitlin’ circuit and was the first female comedian to appear at the Apollo. She was earning US$10,000 a week at Harlem’s Apollo Theater at the height of her career. She recorded 20 albums and appeared at Carnegie Hall. Whoopi Goldberg made her directorial debut with the documentary Moms Mabley: I Got Somethin’ to Tell You. In 1974 she starred in the movie Amazing Grace.
Ethel Waters (1896 - 1977) was a blues, jazz singer and an actress. To be out as a #lesbian actress in #Hollywood is still rare. We can’t begin to imagine the struggles that Ethel Walters faced as a black lesbian entertainer in the early part of the 20th Century. She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award in 1949 for the film Pinky, directed by Elia Kazan. She is also the first African-American woman to be nominated for an Emmy Award, in 1962.

Let’s face facts, most #blacklesbians don’t respect uhaul relationships (even though many of us have had at least one uhaul experience). The respect is not often there because most of those relationships crash and burn.
<3 But what about the uhaul relationships that DO work???? Uhaul success stories do exist! Three #blacklesbian couples who are STILL happily uhauled will be joining the women of our private Facebook group to share their stories tonight. <3 To join the conversation live tonight, November 17, 2019 at 7 p.m. EST or to catch the replay, subscribe at community.blacklesbianlovelab.com.
