I said almost 2 years ago I was going to start doing more tutorials and progress logs. Well…here I am finally trying to pick up on that promise.
I’ve had a lot of questions in person about how I curl my wigs. So I figured this was as good a place as ever to start! Image heavy under the cut!
All the wigs featured in this tutorial are from Arda. I trust their heat resistance and know they will hold up to the styling process. Make sure your wig is heat resistant before attempting to curl it or your fibers will melt, which is very messy.
The main wig you’ll see here is for my Dungeons and Dragons OC Verthandi:
Her wig is made up of an Arda Jeannie and 3 curly clips in Ginger Blonde. After wearing her at MAGFest and her curls going almost completely flat I had to re-style her.
For her I can remove the ponytail clips to re-curl but this process is the same with a full wig as well.
As you can se she became very flat. First step was to brush her out and put in curlers. I use foam curlers as then then to not get caught in the fibers. They will take longer to dry though since they’ll absorb the water.
Keep in mind the curler size and how much hair you put in each will determine the thickness and size of your curls.
Next is getting a large pot of water to almost a boil. If you get it to boiling it may melt the wig so be careful! I shut the stove off as soon as it reaches a nice simmer. and add your wig to the water. It doesn’t need to sit in there long. I usually go 5-15 min. depending on how long the wig is.
Alternatively you can use a steamer to the pot and water method if you have one available. You can skip a lot of drying time if you have one but they’re not as easy to come by.
Remove the wig from the water carefully with tongs. and let the wig dry. Depending on the length of the wig this can take an evening or multiple days. If you’re in a rush a blow dryer can speed up the process.
After everything is dry its time to start taking the curlers out! Depending on the look your going for this may be your last step! I pull each curl out individually and hairspray it into place. If you’re looking for perfect ringlets go slowly.
For example this is where I stopped for Delilah.
Verthandi however is supposed to look like she’s been sleeping on her airship and not taking care of her hair. So I brushed out all her curls to give her more volume and teased underneath to make her hair even bigger!
This is where I stopped with Briar Rose to create that full Disney Princess look.
I then took a low heat straightener and relaxed some of the curls so it looked more natural. Also getting rid of some of the friz.
Instead of relaxing some of the curls you can relax all of them to create a more wavy look. Which is what I did for Jester.
Anyway, Verthandi is a messy girl! I hit the curls with some hairspray for good luck and she’s done! Playing around with curls is fun and you can get many different looks! Have fun and Happy wig styling!
Long time no progress! I started working on some new projects for Dragon*con! It feels nice to be making some progress again! I’ll try to remember to post more individual progress on them as I continue as well as on their counterparts for my Fiancée!
