As you know, our librarians here at Wilson Library love finding all the mermaids in our special collections. So today, when we came across multiplemer-beings in our stacks, we knew we had to share them with our Tumblr followers.
These mer-men (and mer-creatures and mer-clergymen) were found in our Rare Books Collection’s copy of Physica Curiosa, a 17th century text dealing with a wide range of subjects including zoology, cryptozoology, obstetrical abnormalities, and demonology. Although Gaspar Schott includes all manner of centaurs, monster-chickens, wolf-men, and other oddities in Physica Curiosa, these mermaids are definitely our favorite cryptid of the book.

Cryptid of the Day: Specter Moose
Description: Since 1891, hunters throughout Maine have encountered a massive moose, said to be 10-15ft tall and weighing over 2500 pounds. Some even say the moose glows a white aura, and can disappear at will. The moose was seen in 2002, and shortly after, a restaurant burned down.

April 5th: On April 5th, 1966, Kathy Reeves and her friend were walking to here house in Newport, Oregon when they came across three small “things” passing the road ahead of them. Reeves described them as walking stumps, This was followed by the girls experiencing paranormal activity in the days to come.

Description: Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, people around the world have reported seeing flying humanoids, usually silhouetted in darkness and floating in the air, sometimes with wings, sometimes without. They could be aliens, or our eyes mistaking common objects.

April 4th: On April 4th, 1982, near Galion, Ohio, a group of Columbus police and firefighters saw a large creature swimming in Olentangy River. They described the creature as resembling a hippo. The creature has never been seen since.

Cryptid of the Day: Chessie
Description: Sightings began in 1936, when a military helicopter pilot saw something reptilian over Bush River. Since then, it has been seen dozens of times, including being video taped in 1982. A manatee discovered in Chesapeake Bay in 1994 was named after the monster.

April 3rd: In 1968, Mabel Walsh was driving along Narrabeen Lake with her nephew when they saw something standing in the shallow end of the lake. They described it as 4ft tall, dark grey, leathery skinned and a trunk.

April 2nd: In 1938, marine biologist and illustrator Richard Ellis was born. Ellis is known for his many books about sea animals, as well as his interests in monsters. He was a member of the International Society of Cryptozoology.

Cryptid of the Day: Moehau Monster
Description: In 1978, Bigfoot researcher John Green discovered reports of a Sasquatch like creature seen in New Zealand called the Moehau Monster. It was described as 7ft tall, and traced back sightings from the 1870s, though he later dismissed the creature as impossible.

April 1st: Reported on a now deleted forum page was an account from April 1st, 2003 of Brush Monkeys, Sasquatch like animal seen in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The stories were complied by an English game hunter named I.M Lyon, and DNA of the animal was examined by Shanghai biologist Dr. Phool Yu.

Description: Legend has it that every Asian restaurant has a specific chef that’s part man, part shrimp. He has only one job, and that’s to fry rice. According to a gallup poll, only 23% of Americans believe that shrimp fry rice.

March 31st: A week earlier, Giichi Shiota claimed to have seen an suit clad figure floating in the air, calling it an “alien cosmonaut”. On this day in 1975, he saw the monster again after suffering a brutal headache in Kawanoe City, Japan.

Cryptid of the Day: Hapyxelor
Description: Hapyxelor is a lake monster reported in Ontario’s Muskrat Lake. Donald Humphreys coined the name after he saw a 24ft creature swimming in the lake in 1968. Another name for the monster is Mussie, and soon after more sightings of strange things were found on the lake.

On This Day in Cryptid History
March 30th: A New York Times article from 1922 tells of Theodore Roosevelt receiving a report of a huge amphibian creature in the Southern Andes. Roosevelt wanted to hunt the monster after hearing the story, but it would seem he declined afterwards.
