As you know, our librarians here at Wilson Library love finding all the mermaids in our special collections. So today, when we came across multiplemer-beings in our stacks, we knew we had to share them with our Tumblr followers.
These mer-men (and mer-creatures and mer-clergymen) were found in our Rare Books Collection’s copy of Physica Curiosa, a 17th century text dealing with a wide range of subjects including zoology, cryptozoology, obstetrical abnormalities, and demonology. Although Gaspar Schott includes all manner of centaurs, monster-chickens, wolf-men, and other oddities in Physica Curiosa, these mermaids are definitely our favorite cryptid of the book.

Void No. 6 has an emerald crystal heart. The face is hollow and lined with black velvet. It has a coat of specialty faux fur that glistens like dragon scales when the light shifts. The neck is comprised of individually layered fur, ostrich feather, and gold tinsel. Each fur color change on the body was hand sewn together. Every part of the skeleton contains a fully posable ball and socket armature that will not wear out over time. The ears have a ball joint base so it can be easily posed in any position. The head, ears, and legs were all cast in durable resin and painted with pigments that shimmer like the fur.
The buildings are old and need constant repairs, so something is always under construction. Despite this, you have never seen anyone working on the roped off parts of the buildings. They simply shut down for a month and then re-open, fixed. Odd.
The movement teacher won’t stop talking about “The Work.” There is no clear definition, but it involves The Self and also The Body.
No one sleeps. At all. Not the professors, not the students, not the administrative team, and definitely not the resident company members. Your chances of passing someone in the hall are the same at 4 AM as they are at 2 PM.
Someone says the word “Macbeth” and the room goes dead quiet. The whole floor goes dead quiet. You don’t hear a word spoken in the whole building for the rest of the day. The offender isn’t in class the next day, or the day after that. Eventually, you forget their name.
During midterm week, you dream fitfully about “The Work.” You wake up in a cold sweat, almost certain that you’ll figure out what it is next time.
Your movement final is to “encounter yourself.” You don’t know what this means, but now you keep catching glimpses of yourself in crowds of people. The date of your final draws nearer. You don’t know what you’re going to turn in. Your reflection in the mirror has started lagging a bit. You get the feeling you will be encountering yourself very soon.
“The Work,” says a man on the subway. You clench your hands in your pockets. You have to stay on alert.
The alumni list is long and lofty. The teachers refer to it constantly. “This could be you, right?” You run into one of the alumni on your way downtown. Their eyes are empty. They will not look at you.
You sit down to watch a company show. You come to an hour and a half later during the bows, program still in hand. Everyone else agrees it was a brilliant show. You are not sure what happened to you during it. You may never be sure.

[Commissioned by @glarnboudin, who’s got a real Hanna-Barbera theme going. Given the watchuki’s weird technology and propensity for disguising themselves as humans in the episode, I can’t help but wonder if they were inspired by Lovecraft’s “The Whisperer in Darkness”, which posits that the explanation for the Abominable Snowman are in fact hyper-intelligent alien fungi. So I looped around, and made these the creations of the mi-go.
I ran into a bit of a frustrating hiccup, with what @prokopetz refers to as the “Sim-Dungeon” vibe of D&D 3.x and its descendant, Pathfinder RPG. The ability to do 3d6 cold damage as a ranged touch attack is not an overpowered ability for a CR 3 creature, but I wanted to make the cold beams come from an item, like they do in the source material. And the costs of a magic item with this capacity would be way outside the normal treasure for a CR 3 encounter. If this cheat bothers you, make the “watchuki wand” a supernatural ability of these creatures rather than an item.]
Watchuka CR 3 LE Monstrous Humanoid This stocky humanoid has white fur over gray skin. Its face is mostly obscured by a beard and moustache, with piercing red eyes. It is naked save for a harness, off of which hang various strange tools and devices.
The watchuki (watchuka is singular) are an offshoot of the yeti. Although their forebears are strong yet peaceful creatures, watchuki are smaller and weaker but more cruel minded. They are in fact an artificial race—created through a selective breeding program by the mi-go, who were attempting to create a servitor race to handle the grunt work of creating technological items for them while the mi-go engaged in more intellectually satisfying endeavors. Thus, even the dimmest watchuka has an inherent talent for combining magic and technology, using this primarily to forge weapons of war. Many watchuki enclaves now exist separately from their mi-go creators, and some watchuki have forgotten their alien legacy.
Perhaps due to this engineered heritage, watchuki are prone to mutation. About one in three watchuki are born with the giant simple template—these are frequently mistaken for ordinary yeti. Very rarely a Great Watchuka will be born—these creatures are of animal intelligence but are grow to incredible strength and size. A Great Watchuka is a megaprimatus with the magical beast type and the fear gaze and cold resistance of a watchuka.

Description: Since 1891, hunters throughout Maine have encountered a massive moose, said to be 10-15ft tall and weighing over 2500 pounds. Some even say the moose glows a white aura, and can disappear at will. The moose was seen in 2002, and shortly after, a restaurant burned down.
