I wanna explain my Duchess Swan headcanon where i said she’s the child of both Odette and Odile but made with Rothbart’s magic.
So before Duchess was born all of the characters in her story agreed that their story was unfair since literally none of them had a happy ending. While working together to find a loophole Odette fell in love with Odile.
Once their story started Odile confessed her love for Odette to try and break her curse. However, because she’s Rothbarts daughter the curse didnt accept her confession completely and Odette was temporarily turned human for a few years. After this, prince Siegfried ended up running away to start a different life outside of his story.
While the curse was temporarily gone, Odette and Odile got married. Soon they debated having a child for a long time because they didn’t want them to go through with there story. Eventually they agreed that they wanted a child so they asked Rothbart for some magical help to create a child.
Rothbart agreed and with his and Odile’s magic (yes she has magic in this, she’s the child of a sorcerer) they made Duchess. Odette, Odile, and Rothbart all love her dearly. Because she was made from Rothbart’s magic and made to be the child of Odette and Odile, she inherited all three of their destinies and has the choice of which part she wants to play.
This explains why she’s the only character (that we know of) from her story at eah.
Duchess also has magic thanks to Rothbart. Its not as strong as it could be but she could learn how to grow her powers if she wishes. This is why in Next Top Villain headmaster Grimm thought that she would be a good fit for the next Evil Queen.
When Duchess was about five years old the curse finally took affect again on Odette and she was turned back into a swan. Since her story didn’t play out how it should have she still has the ability to turn back into a human at night.
When Odette turned into a swan again Odile took Duchess to live with her grandmother. She then left to try and find a way to permanently undo Odettes curse. Rothbart also helped raise Duchess after that and helped learn how to use her magic. He doesn’t spend as much time with her as her grandmother does though because he also does all he can to find a way to reverse the curse.
Odette does her best to visit Duchess at night but most of the time is gone with Odile. Duchess also writes to her mother as regularly as she can but hasn’t actually seen her in person since she left. Sometimes she gets paranoid thinking that she’s been writing to someone else by mistake and worries about her mother. She also worries that her mother really left because she didn’t want Duchess. Her grandmother reassures her that her mother’s alright and her mother does her best to comfort her in her letters and tell her she loves her and that she would be there if she could.
Duchess keeps all of the letters in a little chest to make sure that she remembers why her mother left, to free Odette and Duchess of the swan curse, not because she didn’t want her. Odile also keeps all of Duchess’ letters because they’re the only way she can see her daughter grow up.
Those letters are very precious to them both. Lizzie once nearly found out about Duchess’ mother when she stayed up sll night writing her a letter and ended up falling asleep on her desk.
Once she realized why her family was so separated, Duchess decided to be the next white swan to try and find someone who loves her as much as her mothers love each other.
She believes following your destiny is a good thing but that true love’s kiss isn’t completely true because she knows how much her mother’s love each other but for some reason destiny doesn’t think they should be together.
Duchess continues to take general villainy because she wants to make her magic stronger and find a way to break her mother’s curse and bring her family back together.
No one at school knows about Duchess family because headmaster Grimm doesn’t want anyone getting any rebellious ideas from her family and how they went through with their stories. They just think that all swan princess’ have the choice of being the white or black swan.
During parents day, Odette visits Duchess at night and they spend the night talking by the lake near the school. Rothbart has tried to be there for his granddaughter for parents day but his wife eventually convinced him that revealing his relation to Duchess would only cause them unwanted drama and they didn’t need that distraction from trying to help Odette.
Rothbart reluctantly agreed but sends Duchess little gifts ever parents day as an apology for not being there. Duchess has never held this against him. She has never and could never hate her family. They’re the most important thing to her. She hates the situation with a burning passion more than anything.
The only people who know about her family are Faybelle, Ginger, and a few of the parents who knew about Odette and Odile in high school. (Faybelle and Ginger because I head canon the three of them as childhood best friends because I think that dynamic would be cool.) Lizzie has her suspicions after seeing Duchess spend so much time writing letters to an unknown person.
- So ya thats my headcanon about Duchess’ family. Just to be clear Rothbart is Odile’s father so she would grow up to be Rothbart and her child the black swan and so on. The grandma is Rothbarts wife because if it was Odette’s mother she would have still been a swan or dead depending on the version of the story.
- I was thinking about writing a fanfic about this but my laziness won so i thought I’d just explain this here. If you anyones interested i might talk about this more or talk about other families in eah that I have headcanons about.

It was when she was cutting Duchess’ hair one day that Poppy discovered a tuft of feathers growing at the base of her neck. She didn’t bring it up to Duchess; her pleading eyes in the mirror told her that she already knew.
They’d known this was coming for a while. Duchess was fated to become a swan forever. It was inescapable in a way that biology couldn’t deny. While other people had the chance to rebel against their destinies, Duchess’ was coded into her DNA.
There was nothing to do for it, and no point in complaining. But she did notice Duchess holding onto her a bit tighter. Her hand clenched hers when they went to the park and saw swans in the lake. At night, she slept curled around Poppy’s body, living every day as if it was her last. It was heartbreaking.
If Duchess was going to be a swan, Poppy wanted to be a swan too. It was so unfair that she had the freedom to choose her own destiny in a way that Duchess didn’t. Poppy had never gotten a straight answer from her about whether the girl wanted things to be like this. Back at Ever After High she’d been a proud royal, dismissing anyone who went against their destinies. Poppy was surprised they’d ever grown close, but then again, she didn’t have any destiny to speak of. In some ways she felt responsible for any of the pain she imagined the other girl was feeling, because she was living proof of the fact that some people were allowed to be free.
And maybe Duchess had just been putting on a brave face after all. Because one night, mumbled painfully while she was asleep and Poppy was sitting up in bed trying to think about a way in which they could both be happy, she’d heard the quiet words, vulnerable in a way that Duchess never was. “I’m scared.” And Poppy knew she would never be able to recover from the heartbreak of hearing that.
