Like granted, I guess it’s just like… telling Feferi to cut the fish puns with “okay i get it we are nautically themed” sounds like a frivolous meta joke but the idea is to show that Eridan is kind of at a remove from life on Alternia, right? Like things feel artificial to him. So I’m getting a feeling like he regards his surroundings as magical but feels his SURROUNDINGS aren’t real. Like an earlier version of that sense that the world is bullshit that John has in Candy route.

jake is the only character to dream of another speaking character without that person actually being there (deadmituna dreams of lusus, deadjohn dreams of dad egbert), and then his dream projection gained sentience and independence only after he first dreamt of him .. kurloz had a horrific nightmare and then destroyed his tongue and meulin’s ears. gamzee eats sopor slime, which he should be sleeping in… does eridan ever do anything while asleep? anything to do with dreaming? i don’t think so but i want to be wrong so i can be right about this

other mentions of nightmares include george washington’s prophetic nightmares (of clowns, which, rage) and caliborn saying that lil cal will manifest in the nightmares of the unsuspecting. i’m not counting jade’s shitty dream bubble experience for this.

i only got to thinking about this because i thought kurloz’s nightmare was the only time a non-dream bubble dream was mentioned. but brain ghost dirk mentions “normal dream functions” too despite those literally not existing for anyone who’s woken up as their dream self, and we never see the dreams of non-awake dreamers like early john. of course this depends on kurloz actually experiencing a nightmare instead of seeing something particularly awful in skaia’s clouds.. no way to know

that said though kurloz does seem to make splinter-like hidey holes in dream bubbles. eridan where ARE you i need your help with this

i’ve thought about it some more and i have AN answer for this (though i’ll be the first to admit it’s a stretch)

Something to add to this: Eridan expresses envy of Kanaya’s cloud visions, saying his clouds hide nothing but misfortunes and monstrosities – I used to think this meant he was awake on Derse, but Derse doesn’t have clouds at all. Eridan’s just referring to the dark clouds around his little island – though he has a Horrorterror in the neighborhood, so he might as well be on Derse. And comparing his real clouds to dream clouds matters, because Eridan seems to feel as though he’s living in a dream? He shoots the floating whale and says to himself magic is fake, none of this is real… And something about fish puns in particular really strains plausibility for him, he gets on Feferi’s case twice for that. “I cannot BELIEVVE you are doing the fish pun thing while you’re breaking up with me.” He really can’t!

Also, I personally think Brainghost Dirk is the ghost of the Dirkbot, who ends up in Jake’s head because Jake’s bedposts connect to the dreambot station that Dirkbot was in? Jake sort of downloaded a Dirk
