Pandemic echoes

About a year ago Fern asked, how Covid changed our photography. I am still fascinated by that question and I am still without an proper answer.

As to me and my angle of vision it feels like a mask that unmasks something under the common cultural surface. Like looking from a dismantling point of view as you have no chance to escape that uncommon context on one side and using filters on the other side, that bring back the everyday days. An inner and pictorial conversation about human conditions, nature, culture and art. It´s inspiring unanswered.

Hehe..I know, that´s a massive belated reaction, but I am slow and always late. I might show some more pictures about the pandemic echoes, if I don´t forget about it.

Love, Katharina

P.S.: The sculpture ‘Josh’ was created by the great Tony Matelli

ONIBI exhibition in Japan

We are so happy to annouce there will be a big ONIBI exhibition this fall in Japan for 3 months! Almost all the original watercolor pages and pencils will be displayed at the Niigata city Manga House from October 21 to January 3. This project was initiated by our friend (and Onibi’s Japanese translator) Chinatsu Komagata and is supported by Niigata Manga House and the Archive Center for Anime Studies in Niigata University (ACASiN). We will be received for a 1 month ( from… September 25 to October 25) art residency to make workshops, conferences, videos… Our travel is funded by the Niigata Culture Promotion Foundation and the Niigata university where Cecile studied in 2009-2010.
If you are in Japan, please, come to visit Niigata and see our exhibition! If you cannot come to Japan, you will be able to follow our stay on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. We will also make videos to present you the places of Niigata that inspired us for our graphic novel Onibi.

‘This is Tomorrow’ - The posters

A selection of the promotional posters designed by the individual groups involved in the 1956 Whitechapel Art Gallery exhibition 'This is Tomorrow’, all using Edward Wright’s typographic identity (to use the term loosely) which I introduced in my previous post

The variety of approaches seen in the posters sets the tone for the exhibition on the whole, which was an eclectic series of installations by 12 teams, or 'groups’, comprised of practitioners from different creative fields. Such as art, music, sculpture, architecture and graphic design as well as theorists and critics. Most were members or associates of the 'Independent Group’, who formed in 1952 and held meetings at the ICA. It is notable that Richard Hamilton’s collage 'Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?’ was originally created to be used on his groups poster, but went on to be the most important piece to come out of the exhibition. It is probably the most iconic image of early British Pop Art.

All the images of the posters are from the V&A’s online archive.

I’ve written an article about iconic British 20th century designer Abram Games, and the exhibition ‘Designing the 20th Century: Life and Work of Abram Games’which is on at the Jewish Museum, London until 19th January.

“Abram Games lived a fascinating life and left behind an exceptional body of work across various disciplines of design, making the exhibition ‘Designing the 20th Century: Life and Work of Abram Games’ a must see for anyone interested in graphic design. Seeing his best known work in person is an absolute joy, plus the biographical and personal information really adds depth, but what I found most engaging about the exhibition was considering Games’ position in the development of ‘Graphic Design’ as a discipline…”

Last Saturday I went down to Kemistry to check out their latest exhibition: Fredun Shapur. Playing with Design

I really didn’t know much about Fredun Shapur before this exhibition was announced, my awareness of his work amounted to seeing a few jpegs here and there online. Anyone who follows my other blog knows, I’m a big fan of this style and era of design. Fredun Shapur is a brilliant example of Mid-Century Modern, and he fits alongside a few other designers, such as the Eameses, Ken Garland and Bruno Munari, who developed a fun, bright and optimistic graphic style while pursuing design work aimed at children (and their parents). It is also worth noting he was also an accomplished product designer, with his toy designs sharing an aesthetic with his 2d work.

It was amazing to see so many examples of his work in person and to learn a bit more about his life. Fredun studied at Central St.Martins, where he later taught, and also the RCA where he was taught by Abram Games (Who also has an exhibition on in London currently, more on that soon). His work definitely has a timeless charm and appeal to it, I’m very glad to have seen it and learnt more about him!

You can catch the exhibition in Shoreditch until November 15th, highly recommended! Also #SaveKemistryGallery (more on that here very soon too)

This 30’s libido is on a whole different level. Absolutely pulverized my wife last night after dicking her down after already getting off once an hour prior. Then after getting her off, I got myself off again. Woke up 6 hours later for work and had a massive hard on. Hopefully I can keep it hidden at work when it wants to rear its magnificent head
