Last Black Man in San Francisco is more than a movie, it is a poetic experience. I have never been to San Fran but after watching this film, I feel like I have. The story couldn’t be more authentic, being directed and co-writen by San Francisco natives @technicolor_talbot and his childhood friend @jimmiefailsiv who plays himself in the film. The incredibly beautiful cinematography by @knucklewood drives you through the city, telling a story much more about a place than a character. This film was made possible by several independent producers, a Kickstarter, @planbentertainment , and @a24 . The cast has everyone from big stars like #dannyglover and #robmorgan as well as local, first-time San Francisco actors. The film has already won several awards for first-time filmmakers, and I’m sure it will continue to win even more. This film is a poetic ode to San Francisco that addresses gentrification, local characters, male friendships, vulnerability, feeling like an outsider, community, and so much more. Finally got to see Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit and it was just as awesome as I thought it would be. Adapted from a novel by Christine Leuens, only Watiti could balance humor with WWII and Nazis. When I saw him speak in 2018 at TIFF, I remember him mentioning his new film where he would be playing Hitler, implying what a bigger fuck you to that guy than to be played by a mixed Jewish New Zealander. The cast is incredible #scarlettjohansson #samrockwell #rebelwilson #alfieallen to just name a few, and some incredible new, young faces, like #romangriffindavis who has already won several young actor awards. It has also already won a bunch of awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, AFI Movie of the Year, and is nominated for several Academy Awards. You will find yourself laughing at moments you don’t expect and then gripping your seat with emotion. This is a brilliant film that portrays humor and humanity set in a time where both were hard to find. It’s back in theaters, so go check it out!⠀

I really enjoyed watching and reading “The Farewell” (thank you @a24 !) and getting a glimpse into a familiar family story told in a very culturally different way. It’s a relatively simple film, with a big, emotional core written and directed by @thumbelulu . I respect that she told an authentic immigrant story, and told it in both English and Chinese. To me, it’s a story about family, and the burdens we take on for them. I love the relationship between @awkwafina and #shuzhenzhao , it is so wholesome, and congrats to Awkwafina for winning the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy (although, not sure I would consider this film a comedy)! ⠀
After watching, I am still on the fence about the cultural difference in the decision not to tell someone with cancer that they are dying because the knowledge and stress will kill them faster, and the film ultimately doesn’t address the final outcome. For Westerners, the film will probably leave you pondering this question, but first, call your family, especially if your grandma is still here. ⠀

I had the great pleasure to watch the truly incredible piece of filmmaking, 1917, last week. ⠀
Written and directed by Sam Mendes it tells a different kind of war story, not so much about two sides fighting, but a more intimate, human story that is not afraid to show the waste of human lives and materials used in war. The greatest cinematographer in the world @rogerdeakins , really did film it to look like one shot which pushes the audience into an intimate, rush-for-time journey across the battlefields of WWI. Incredible acting by everyone in this film, from Oscar nominated actors, to the extras, everyone had to be ready for that one shot. I had the pleasure of watching “Where Hands Touch” at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018, and saw George McKay at the premiere, and I gotta ask where this man’s Oscar nom?! He carries this film almost literally on his back with minimal dialogue and a lot of running. While I am not a big war movie fan, but this film’s story and visuals are incredible and definitely deserve praise. Go see 1917 in theaters, it is worth it. ⠀

Finally sat down to watch the beautifully horrifying film Midsommar, and I gotta say I loved it. ⠀
I had the opportunity to read the script before watching the film thanks to @a24 having their scripts on their website, because they are amazing. I feel like this helped me get an even deeper look into the film as I watched it, and even though I knew what was coming, I was still shocked. @ari.aster is a brilliant writer/director and although I’m mad this is only his second feature film, I also loved Hereditary. This is a vacation film about break-ups, emotional support, and Scandinavian white people cults. Although besides some of the rituals performed, I think I would be with it. This film is definitely not for the faint of heart, and doesn’t shy away from anything it portrays! I loved it for its beautiful cinematography and subtle authenticity and I can’t wait to see what Ari Aster will horrify me with next. ⠀

Another 2019 film favorite I have been recommending is Little Monsters.⠀
Who doesn’t love a good zombie comedy? Throw in Lupita Nyong'o, some adorable children, and make it Australian? It’s a winner. Writer and director @abeforsythe is a newish name to the film industry and this is a great film to breakthrough with. I’ll admit some of the characters are a little unbearable at times, but it is balanced with an always incredible performance from Lupita and some pretty freakin adorable child actors. If you want a fun, heart-warming, gore-filled good time, you will just eat it up with Little Monsters.⠀

As 2019 came to a close, I realized I hadn’t seen as many movies as I thought this year, and I have missed out on most people’s top films. So I decided to sneak in one more before the New Year and that was Knives Out. ⠀
This film is the perfect film to summarize 2019 not only because it is a fun, entertaining murder mystery, but also because of the incredibly relevant social commentary in the film as well. Brilliantly written and directed by @riancjohnson, a star studded cast effortlessly weaves you through the narrative. ⠀
