Spoilers ahead frozen 2
Apparently I can’t go to sleep until I process what the fuxk is bothering me about frozen2.
Don’t get me wrong, I really really liked it, love the songs everything was awesome. Next Right Thing bit me to the core and is exactly what we need to hear.
But the minute Elsa started to sing “Show Yourself” I knew what she was going to find. She wasn’t going to find anyone else there but herself. A Superman style montage of her mother welcoming her home and the truth of what happened to make the northendra(?) People and the arendelians fight.
For some reason, finding only herself severely disappointed me. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting, but I was hoping she would find more than just a new deified role.
They deified her. For some reason I felt a real kinship with Elsa. She has these abilities, she has this disconnect with the people around her, a sense of not belonging or doing what she was meant to do, which a lot of us feel.
But finding the pseudo Inuit people… I thought maybe they might be her people in a sense they had powers like her and would help her transform into a master of her craft by accepting and actually training her and letting her fit in with their culture with a deeper sense of belonging than she ever had in arendelle.
But instead of connecting with the people of her ancestry and exploring their culture and feeling that sense of belonging and that missing piece she had been searching for, Disney made her a white god to brown people. And took her out of our reach to relate to.
They could have at least made her a martyr. But they brought her back like psuedo Jesus but instead of becoming truly an elemental that would have fit better among the other entities and her story; she gets to live, alive and well with these people she doesn’t know, in a culture she doesn’t seem to want to integrate into, shirk her responsibility as queen of arendelle (to be fair that’s an exhausting job) and just play in the woods like a fairy.
And I mean, there’s so much to unpack with that. Like how her childhood was stolen from her, just like mine, and she should have the freedom to frolic with the wind, but maybe instead of making her into a god, she either should have died outright, or should have lost her ice power when she became unfrozen and the fifth Element should have separated itself from her so she could feel whole and new again and free from the burden of the power, and then we should have gotten a montage of Elsa living out her life adopting the culture of her people, using the nature spirits like they did, wearing their clothes and learning their stories first hand straight from them. And getting that sense of belonging and kinship she couldn’t get in Arendelle. The spirits still favor her and allow messages between her and Anna.
It doesn’t feel right.
