he’d be smug abt it too like OH. remember when u went apeshit on me for some cars and a bit of cocaine there? yes, i kidnapped your brother don’t change the subject, we’re not talking about me now. eco-fascism, is it? every dream thing went goodnight, did it? i’d never done that personally myself, not even close. i mean IF WE WERE to compare crimes here :/ i COULD - i could be wrong tho. i don’t think i am.
I was literally just thinking about how entities dreamt into a physical form have lovely, mystical names like Cabeswater and Lindenmere and Ilidorin. And now I’ve freaked myself out thinking that Niall Lynch may have dreamt a form for Greywaren and named him Ronan to fit better into the real world.
Allow me to add, since this post is making the rounds again, that there is a line in The Raven King I read today:
Ronan was very good at being a dream thing, especially in Cabeswater.

Like, you ever notice how Ronan only likes people who are connected to his dream forest? Gansey, who IS Cabeswater, Blue is part tree, Adam is psychic and connected to Cabeswater, Hennessy and Kavinsky are dreamers…
He has no time for anyone else. He struggles with Declan, his own brother. Is it sibling rivalry and shitty parenting, or it because Declan is human? Did he hate Aglionby because it was too human?
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the best dream of his entire life is where he destroys a club:
Furious joy, while destroying all trappings of human technology and noise. A lot like slamming his car into a server farm.
I think Ronan, who is older than he thinks, who dreamt Bryde, who is also older than he thinks, is only human-shaped. And I think he’s been wanting to remake the world for a long, long time, and he didn’t even know it.
Bryde’s disdain for humanity is *his* disdain.
I can’t wait for him to learn about who he really is in Greywaren, and see what he really wants for the world.
This is so interesting. All the imagery that Niall uses surrounding Ronan’s birth always sounded so mythological, and this would fit if he was aware that Ronan was something more than human. It’s hinted that Niall himself isn’t precisely human.
Also, I’m rereading Raven Boys, and even that early, so much of the discussion between the ladies at Fox Way centers around the idea that there is something much bigger going on in Henrietta, that they are trying to figure out, and there are hints that it centers around Ronan. Which would make sense if he was a god or something, of destruction and rebirth, brought to earth in human form. Gansey’s quest is really just the edge of it.
But it makes me wonder. Ronan may just be human shaped, but he’s lived as a human for 19 years. He has a brother who is fully human, and even though their relationship is troubled, Ronan does actually care about him. That’s why he’s so bothered that he thinks Declan hates him. And even though Adam is psychic and and affiliated with Cabeswater, he’s still actually human. What will Ronan do when he realizes that the implications of destroying humanity will affect them too.
Oooh good point about the mythological circumstances of Ronan’s birth.
And yeah, Ronan is clearly still attached to human life: see the dreamt phone argument w Bryde, his love of cars, his love of techno music in particular, and his love for Declan and Adam.
But I think that’s why he needed Bryde and why he’s not letting Adam scry into his dreams. He’s attempting to sever his human connection so he can fulfill his purpose in protecting the dreamers and the leylines.
I think he’s going to change his mind, but it’s definitely going to be a battle.
