The Murder of Ashleigh Hall

Ashleigh Hall was a 17-year-old student living in Darlington, UK. She was in her final year of college and hoped to become a childminder or a nursery nurse.

Ashleigh struggled with her self-esteem and preferred to make friends online. She met a boy who she believed was around her age on the social media network Facebook, he had an attractive profile picture and thousands of Facebook friends. As the pair began to speak, the boy showered Ashleigh with compliments and flattery, she eventually agreed to meet the boy in person.

On the day the two were due to meet, 25th October 2009, the boy texted Ashleigh and told her that his father would pick her up and drive her to see him. Ashleigh left her home telling her mother she was going to see a friend. When she arrived at the meeting point the boy texted her giving her a description of his father who was waiting in his car, she got in and was never seen alive again.

It soon emerged that the boy Ashleigh had been talking to was fictitious and that the man behind the profile was actually 32-year-old drifter Peter Chapman. Chapman raped and murdered Ashleigh before dumping her body in a field. Further investigation found that Chapman was a known predator and convicted rapist. He had also attempted to meet two 15-year-old girls before murdering Ashleigh. One of the girls had arranged to meet him in the car park after being lured by his fake profile but had run away when she saw him sitting in his car, it is thought that it was then that he came up with the ruse of telling Ashleigh she would be meeting the father of the boy she thought she had been speaking to.

Chapman was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Ashleigh’s mother urged families to be vigilant online and young people not to meet people without telling their family where they were going.

not to sound like a boomer but i think millenials should stop giving 1 - 10 yearolds their own tablets/ipads or let them roam around the internet willy nilly

Also, needing daily internet access to do schoolwork, research, etc. is not the same thing as giving them 100% unfiltered access to the internet. Especially if you don’t even bother to teach or enforce basic internet safety like stranger danger, etc. Same thing applies if the school provides one for the purpose of doing schoolwork.

Not child under 13 years old should have unlimited internet access. This isn’t me being jealous of those who did, because I was one of them. This is me knowing that I’ve been in danger and have been in contact with several creepy people as a result, and it wasn’t even that bad for me. No child should have that. You are way too young to be on the Internet with no supervision at that age.

genuinely so fucking tired of people leveraging the “groomer” argument against people who support sex ed because scientific literature over decades shows that comprehensive sex education starting around kindergarten actually prevents children from being sexually abused and groomed because it teaches children the correct words for their body parts and also teaches them concepts of privacy, personal space, bodily autonomy, the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touching, and the fact that sex is something that only adults do. children with this knowledge are not only better equipped to identify abuse and predatory behavior and communicate that its happening to a trusted adult, but also prevent it from happening in the first place by recognizing when something is happening that shouldn’t.

sex education does not sexualize children, it prevents children from being sexualized. anyone who is against early foundational sex education and claims they are doing it to protect children is a fucking liar.

Completely agreed. I think healthy sex education is so important, people shouldnt avoid it and acting as sex is something to be shamed. Its part of life, instead of repressing it, we need to teach it in a right way.
