An interview with artist and musician Liz Harris

What’s a habit you find yourself returning to when you make work? Do you fight against it or accept it as part of you?

Shutting others out. I struggle with that, and I accept it. I think a better/grayer balance is possible; I’ve worked towards that.

What does your curiosity look like? How do you explore things?

Best alone or unwatched at least, with lots of space and time, and then, no boundaries, at least when I was small, and sometimes today. I have to make hard walls in order to relay any of it. If I feel too seen or checked upon I freeze. I was teased too much I think, for spacing out, for not being a great word-user. I couldn’t explain to anyone what I was doing, talking to rocks and animals, feeling electricity coming off the ocean.

What are some of your favorite ways to communicate, besides words?

Words I only like when I have lots of time to form them or can use them more like paint or rocks, thrown around loosely.

I spent a lot of childhood talking to ghosts by inviting them to move my body a certain way or make me walk somewhere, use a pen I was holding to send me messages; working at made-up methods of telepathy. I needed friends. I think it’s ok to laugh at this, and I believe in what happened. Some of it was truly demonic. Mostly it was magical.

Liz Harris aka Grouper has revealed plans for a new album called Shade, which arrives on October 22 via kranky. The album is said to be about respite and the coast, and features songs that span the last 15 years – essentially her whole career. They were recorded in three different session in Mount Tamalpais (California), Portland, and recently in Astoria.

The first song to be shared from the album is “Unclean Mind”, which finds her on acoustic guitar, quietly knotting and layering her rough playing into a gentle haze, reminiscent of her breakthrough album Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill. [x]

When you’re sorting the tank filters and a big boye wants cuddles.

(Source)

“Gotta make sure they are cherished”

Someone with a degree in biology please explain this, is the grouper really cruising for cuddles or are we misinterpreting its behavior?

Because it looks awful cuddly is what I’m saying

Fish are WILDLY intelligent and many are so social that they naturally have social behaviors for interacting with other different species as a whole reef-wide community!! When it comes to interaction with humans, many fish can learn to recognize specific humans and increasingly seek attention such as scratches, rubs and simple play behaviors!

@linddzz can you confirm the fishy desire for skritches?

I’ve had a 4ft goliath grouper come up to me and stare reproachfully until I started giving her scritches and gravel showers. Picking up handfuls of the gravel and gently dropping it over their back is a nice fish massage. We encourage the behavior bc it’s a great time to check over them for any health concerns.

Also this looks like maybe a diver helping with a gravel vac tube. Basically a big siphon used to take junk out of the bottom of tanks.

But yeah this is pretty standard grouper neediness lmao

My betta fish used to love getting little pets

I’ve had 5-6 bettas over the years that have enjoyed cuddles. Half of those would do just about anything to swim into my hand or butt up against my fingers during tank cleaning to “ask” for attention. Fish are smart and some species are very, very sweet if they happen to imprint on you.

Brings new meaning to the concept of “pet fish”
