This gorgeous dragon lantern can be found at Cheongyecheon stream as part of 2019 Seoul Lantern Festival exhibit.

Dragons are legendary creatures in Korean mythology and folklore. Usually seen as deities of the river or the sea, overseeing peace in the house, good health and longevity in the family, the harvest, catch and safe sailing. The lantern depicts a dragon holding a wish-fulfilling orb in its mouth–called yeouiju(여의주).

How to get here: the stream is within a walking distance from just about any subway line, but I’d recommend City Hall :)

An Autumn Day by Lee Si-young

A dragonfly sat on the end of a persimmon branch
and dozed off all day.
Even with wind, it did not shake;
even with a cold rain smacking the branch,
it did not move over.
When I quietly approached it,
I was startled to see,
right there, it had arrived in Nirvana.

To me, autumn in Seoul is glorious, golden and smells of cinnamon and chestnuts.

One of my favorite places in Hongdae - Gyeongui Line Book Street and Gyeongui Line Forest Park. I love the idea of repurposing industrial areas and non-public spaces as parks and galleries and this park absolutely follows that idea! It’s a great place to visit for all book lovers but not only! Come check out all the small cafes and restaurants around the area! And enjoy a stroll!

KIMJANG, the making and sharing of kimchi, have has been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage items along with, of course, kimchi itself. “Kimjang allows Koreans to practise the spirit of sharing among neighbours, while promoting solidarity and providing them a sense of identity and belonging; Inscription of Kimjang could contribute to the visibility of intangible cultural heritage by enhancing dialogue among different communities nationally and internationally that practise foodways that similarly make creative use of natural resources,” said the UNESCO committee in regard to its decision to add kimchi and kimjang to the list.

Personally, it’s always a lot of fun to have an opportunity to take part in the making of kimchi! It’s an activity that’s fun and tiring, but ultimately extremely satisfying.

Come autumn, kimchi festivals and kimchi cooking classes offer a lot of opportunities to let foreigners experience the spirit of sharing and making something together - definitely worth trying!

Two little munchkins at the Seoul Fashion Week. Another side of the official fashion week is this - the most stylish children you’ll ever see all around DDP posing for the most prominent street style photographers! It’s an event on it’s own and the determination and hard work both the parents and their precious little models put into it are truly incredible!

Autumn in Seoul is all about fashion!

Peter Pabst <WHITE RED PINK GREEN>
The exhibition is inspired by the sets of modern dance stages of the late German dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch, known for her expressionist art. With a blend of movement, sound, and prominent stage sets, and with performers during the development of a piece (a style now known as Tanztheater), her creations became a major influence in the field of modern dance from the 1970s on.
The exhibition runs at Piknic Gallery until 10/27.

Autumn in Seoul can’t be fulfilled without a mandatory walk in Haneul Park! As October rolls in, silver grass and pink muhly come flooding my IG feed. It’s one of my favorite parks in Seoul, not only because I live close by, but because of the gorgeous Hanging view!

My advice: come early in the morning in order to skip the crowds. As early as sunrise! Otherwise you would be struggling to crop out couples out of your photos!

How to get here: Line 6 World Cup Stadium Station, Exit 1.

For your vintage shopping needs - Gwangjang Market is the best place in Seoul! Rows and rows of everything from unique vintage dresses to vintage Burberry coats. Shopping here is like going on a treasure hunt!

One of the largest markets in Seoul with over a 100 years history, Gwangjang market is truly a place where you can find virtually anything!

Namdaemun Galkuksu Alley: $6 lunch in Seoul

Galkuksuorkalguksu |칼국수 is a very popular Korean noodle dish consisting of handmade knife-cut wheat flour noodles served in a large bowl with broth and other ingredients.

It’s a simple hearty meal that will fill your belly and make you feel warm and fuzzy inside!

Namdaemun Galkuksu Alley | 남대문 칼국수골목 is a great place to try this dish and soak in the atmosphere of a Korean market. It’s simple, loud, delicious and vibrant! As soon as you step in the ahjummas will tag you in all the different directions to make you sit at their table. Be prepared ;) I didn’t expect that and felt a bit overwhelmed, but it’s a part of anauthentic local market experience!

You can find galkuksu everywhere around Seoul, but I think it’s worth checking out this special alley at least once. Have fun, enjoy your meal and experience Seoul like a local!

How to get here: Hoehyeon Station, Line 4. Exit 5.

It’s not hard to find, but it’s a very narrow passageway, so you have to walk slowly and look closely. The sign says “남대문 칼국수골목” and it’s basically a plastic see-through door that opens into the alley filled with kalguksu stalls.

OME Cooking Lab | 오미요리연구소

Enjoy local ingredients, shop at the market & cook traditional Korean meals!

Together with the wonderful chef, we have prepared three dishes and even went on a tour of the Garak Mall!

The dishes were easy to cook and tasted amazing! The recipes are simple enough to become regulars in any household, I think.

We’ve used some seasonal spring greens for the pancake, but those could be easily adjusted according to the season and personal likings.

Korean traditional pancake JEON.

Look at all this health!

Clam soup.

Our chef picked up the freshest clams at the market early in the morning. How yummy!

GARAK MALL: shop & eat like a local.

Whether you are looking to experience traditional Korean cooking and pick up a few tips from the chef at OME Cooking Lab or you want to browse the stalls, buy the freshest produce and cook it at home (or have it cooked for you right at the spot) – Garak Mall got you covered!

Garak Mall, formerly known as Garak Market, is a huge market that offers a wide selection of agricultural products. Here you can buy the freshest fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, seafood.

image

Apart from the food products and the food auctions, Garak Mall also houses a library, cooking studio, convention center, restaurants, hospital, bank, and more!

The seafood zone reminds me of an Aquarium. You name it, they have it! You can buy delicious crabs, shrimps, fish and more and have it cooked for you upstairs! Fresh as it can be!

Also, here you can find a wide selection of dried fish and seafood.

How to get here: Garak Market Station, Line 6 and 8.

Yonsei University Campus | Fave Spots

As a student at Yonsei, sometimes I forget how wonderful the campus is. So here are a few of my fave spots:

For the food: salad, pizza & pasta food court in the Student building are my faves still! Here you can get a decent meal for a really good price!

The food court on B1 floor is even cheaper. They serve the basics. It’s simple and pretty good.

For the meals for your brain: The libraries

For studying I prefer the Central building. No real reason, I guess, I just prefer the atmosphere and the view to the main road. If you feel really tired and you need a nap, head to the sleeping room! The 24hr study took is a life savior for when you have to pull an all nighter. Another life savior is Jamba Juice on the B1 floor.

As for the Samsung Library, the rooftop is amazing! A great place to take a break and some vitamin D! Especially in the spring! (It does get a bit too hot and too sunny in the summer, I’d say now is the best time to enjoy the rooftop!)

Another Yonsei gem is that the campus connects to Ansan mountain. Just follow the main road and the entrance to the hiking paths is going to be right there! Ansan mountain is incredibly be a zzz.

L’Atelier

Add this exhibition to your list of Things to do in Seoul this spring!

L’Atelier is an interactive art museum in Dongdaemun! Jump into famous 19th century paintings, enjoy musical shows (we are talking real short musicals!), and even talk to the paintings (any Harry Potter fans out there?)!

You can even walk the streets of Montmartre in the winter and dance in the snowfall! How magical is that? If you like European art and architecture, you are going to love this experience! It’s more than a museum or exhibition! A wonderful combination of art, music, digital installations makes it a unique and fulfilling experience!

We spent a fun evening enjoying the installations, shows and taking photos! Recommend you to check it out! Since it is located in the Dongdaemun area, I would recommend you to pair it up with your shopping spree and DDP visit!

You can get tickets with a discount on Klook.com and funtastickorea.com

More info: www.light-atelier.com

Where: 11F, Hyundai City Outlet, Dongdaemun
