Raising Your Search Rank

Use the power of tags and custom post urls to get to the top of Google. Search engines use keywords to choose the best content to show. These keywords include your post tags and the post URL.

If you run an 80’s Italian fashion blog, you should consistently tag your posts “#80s #italian #fashion.” The more people interact with your posts, the more Google assumes your blog has valuable information on “80s Italian fashion.”

Custom URLs also bump up your rank. Normally when you make a post, the link ends in a string of numbers.

If you replace those numbers with keywords, search engines will use that information to show your post.

Best practice is to break up the URL with hyphens. This way Google reads “80s-italian-fashion” as three separate keywords and not one long word. Here’s how to add a custom post URL on desktop.

Desktop

  • Click the gear icon in the top right corner
  • Type your custom url. Make sure the keywords are separated by hyphens.

Your post URL now includes a custom url.

Using The Activity Page Like A Pro

Tumblr’s activity page shows your top posts and follower trends. Understanding the activity page can help you decide the type of content to post and find the most engaged people in your community. It can also indicate which days are best to post based on engagement.

The activity page is only available on desktop. To see your activity page:

  • Click the human icon at the top right of your dashboard.
  • Select your blog
  • Select “Activity”
  • You’ll first see your blog’s hourly activity from the last day.
  • Notes are your combined likes, reblogs, and replies from the last day.
  • New followers you gained from the last day.
  • And your total follower count.

The default activity page view is last day/hourly. But you’ll want a larger sample of posts to see a trend. So change the time period from “last day” to “last month”

Hovering over the graph points shows the total notes on your blog from that day. It also shows the top post, the post that received the most notes that day.

Pay attention to which posts you see as top posts. Typically, you’ll see older posts as top posts because it takes time to circulate everyone’s dashboard.

However, if a very recent post is the top post, it means it’s getting more engagement than your older content. This could indicate that content resonates more with your followers.

If a very old post is suddenly a top post, it may have been shared by a larger blog. This could lead to new people visiting your blog. You may want to reblog this post with a reply to take advantage of the traffic.

Tag It Up

Tags are your key to getting noticed on Tumblr. They help your content show up on tagged pages, search results, explore page, and eventually someone’s dashboard. Users often use tags in posts to add more commentary, which is fun.

But remember that you won’t ever generate in search or explore.

To get the most out of your tags, be sure to tag from general to specific. If you’re posting an anime screengrab, it’s not enough to tag it #anime. You’d be competing with thousands of other posts. You should also tag the show title, art style, time period, etc.

Anon Off Or Anon On?

Turning on anon for messages is a big decision. By default, Tumblr doesn’t allow your blog to receive anonymous asks. You’ll have to enable anonymous asks manually. Before you decide to turn anon on or off, consider the pros and cons.

Pros:

  • People will feel less nervous about contacting you which leads to more messages.
  • Nice anons do exist.
  • An anon might turn into a mutual you can talk to regularly.
  • People who don’t have Tumblr can communicate with you.

Cons:

  • Anonymity makes it easier for people to send negative comments.
  • It’s a one way conversation that can’t be followed up.
  • Spammers use anon to send unwanted messages.

While having anon on can lead to some unsavory conversations, you can block anons. To block an anonymous user, click the three little dots at the top of the message then “Block.”

Desktop

Mobile

This blocks the person’s IP address from seeing your blog and messaging you. So if they use the same wifi network but create different blogs, they can’t contact you. Even if they switch devices.

On the downside, if their internet provider gives them a rotating IP address, they can still message you. And if you block someone who is using a public network (like a cafe or library) you may end up blocking other people.

ORIGINAL Q&As

  • Make a text post letting your followers know you’re starting a Q&A. You can choose a topic for the questions or just post “ask me anything.”
  • Wait for questions in your inbox.
  • Reply to the questions.
  • [Optional] Tag the answers #answers. You can then make a tagged page on your blogfor future followers to see.

REBLOG Q&As

You can also start an Q&A by reblogging popular Q&A text posts[bl]. These include a list of questions with an emoji or number next to them. Followers then message you a number or emoji attached to a question.

  • First, reblog the Q&A post.
  • Wait for messages in your inbox.
  • Find the corresponding question.

TAG-003
Tags
Some Tags Are Better Than Others

There’s an art to tagging posts. Tags are used to find content you want to see. They’re also used to filter out content you don’t want to see.

When you tag your posts, think about the wider audience. If you’re posting content that people might not want to see, tag filtered words like #gore, #triggerwarning, or #spoilers. It’s impossible to know what tags people are blocking. So when in doubt, be as specific in the tags as possible.

For example, long text posts take up a lot of space. Scrolling through walls of text makes it harder for people to browse and find images. Long text posts are sometimes tagged #longposts for people who are filtering out that tag.

Desktop

  • Click “Settings”
  • Toggle on “Let people tip you”

After you’ve enabled tips, all your original posts will have tipping on by default. If you want to disable tips on specific posts, you can manually toggle it off in the post settings. Keep in mind, this is currently only available on the web.

GIVING TIPS

You can tip creators either publicly or anonymously. Either way, you’ll have to be logged into your account to send a tip.

Posts with tipping enabled have a small tip icon at the bottom. After clicking the icon, you can select which tip amount you want to send. If you’re on desktop, you can add a custom tip amount. The minimum tip amount is $1.

When you add a message (allowed for non-anonymous tips only), this will add your message a reply to the post you just tipped.

Filtering Tags

Filtering tags obscures posts with certain subject matter. This applies to posts on your dashboard and explore page.

Filtering tags will also prevent trending topics to be visible, even if they are trending too.

Filtered tags are also known as blocked tags. You can filter trigger words( i.e. #gore and #tw), spoilers, and even post types.

Our community respects and understands how important tagging is. So while some posts may slip through the cracks, filtering tags is highly effective.

Here’s how to filter tags on desktop and mobile.

Desktop

  • Click the human icon and select “Settings”
  • Scroll Down to “Content You See”
  • Scroll down to “Filtered Tags” and click the pencil icon next to “You are not filtering any tags” to edit your filtered tags.
  • Add the tag you want to filter

Mobile

  • Tap the gear icon on your blog
  • Tap “General settings”
  • Tap “Content you see”

  • Tap “+New” next to “Filtered tags”

  • Type the tag and select “Add”
