Pumpin

We woke up at the lean-to with little to no water left after coffee, re-hydrated milk and of course, plain old water. There was a small winding path away from the camp sites and loos lined with with small rocks to guide you away from tromping on the lush growth of new plants trying to start their journey this spring amongst the hundred hear old tress towering over them. This path takes you to a small brook with a pool of water for drinking. All water, no matter how safe you believe the area to be, has a possibility of contamination, so we brought this small compact water purification pump to help us out. The only was we could keep Nolan here out of the clean water, was to show him the ropes.

4 Miles

That long pack ride really tuckered him out. We’ve found the lean-to’s in-between the horn peaks in time for sundown. We will settle in and explore a bit before bed.

The Packs

Early June of 2015 my man and I took our 2 year-old son on a 3-day hike in the Bigelow Preserve of the Appalachian Trail of Maine. We peaked 3 mountains ranging in elevation from 3,000-just over 4,000 ft. We felt like champions. We had been planning this trip for months, I had other business to attend to in Farmington and figured we take the opportunity to drive the extra hour back north to Stratton our home a few winters prior. We started our journey 4 hours late due to thunderstorms and began in a misty and muggy climate with hesitant smiles.

Here is the home to the second largest range in the state and thought to be the most dangerous section of the whole 2,180 mile journey. (This has most do with unpredictable, fast, and strong currents from the Kennebec river that must be crossed to continue the journey to Katahdin. We, however didn’t have to go that far.) The mountains are steep, often times requiring all fours and assistance to get ourselves and our absurdly heavy packs over large boulder fields and up narrow cliffside stairs. Needless to say, next time Nolan will be carrying his own back.

Handsome

So much for the fork.. This little fruit, veggie, grain, smoothie pouches may be the best thing ever invented. No additives, healthy, delicious, easy. These are some of my favorite photos taken of him. The light that night was magical and his blue rain jacket make those big blue eyes really pop.

Mini Sticks!

On flat ground, the very little that there was, we would lower our hiking sticks to their lowest setting making them just small enough for this one to fumble around with. These were his favorite parts of the hike, understandably so. We were just about to the camp ground between West and Avery Peaks. The sun was going down, it was getting cold, I was getting very “hangry”. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, it is used quite often in my household, meaning, angry from hunger. We were all very ready for our third and final night on the Appalachian.
