#house of finwe

LIVE

All of the House of Finwe share a common trait…brave of heart and dumb of ass, with two exceptions. Galadriel, brave of heart and smart of ass and Maglor, a bit more selectively brave of heart yet still dumb of ass.

It’s been awhile since I’ve sketched Findis, but my love for her has not diminished

Galadriel: I wish I had the ability to make my crushes nervous.

Aredhel: Holding a really sharp knife to their neck usually does the trick.

WatchingRebecca and thinking of Indis and the empty spaces left, the sense of not-belonging, of not measuring up, of competing with a ghost and losing. She was a genius. Her tapestries fill the house. Her genius son glares from the shadows at you if you so much as touch them with a fingertip. You’re not a genius. You’ve never made anything but spontaneous, uncrafted songs. You love to run and play at sports in the outdoors and come home in disarray. She was always immaculate; you can’t have dirt if you work with textiles.

Your fear your husband will never love you the way he loved her. You fear he’ll never love your children the way he loves her son.

Unlike in du Maurier’s book, you’re right.

Finwëan Family Tree (based on the Silm rather than HoME):

Second generation: 3 people. Survivors of the First Age: 1 [Finarfin]

Third generation: 15 people (7 Fëanorean, 3 Fingolfinian, 5 Finarfinian). Survivors of the First Age: 2 [Maglor and Galadriel]

Fourth generation: 6 people (1 Fëanorean [Celebrimbor], 3 Fingolfinian [Gil-Galad, Idril, Maeglin], 2 Finarfinian [Finduilas, Celebrian]). Survivors of both the First and Second Ages: 2[Idril and Celebrian]. (EDIT: Correction in bold.)

Fifth generation: 4 people (0 Fëanorean, 1 Fingolfinian [Eärendil], 3 Finarfinian [Celebrian’s kids]). Survivors of the First, Second, and Third Ages: All 4!

Conclusions:

- This is a really weird-shaped tree

- Galadriel and her descendents have an amazing survival / avoidance-of-violent-death record relative to the rest of the family.

- By the 7th generation, the only descendents of Finwë are Men; no elves.

Reblogging with correction! Thanks to @leandrafalconwingand@middle-earth-mythopoeia for pointing out that Idril also survived!

Huh.

This should be an infographic, I feel like this is Important Data

@tolkien-feels not quite an infographic, but I think this is the best I can make! It’s just… sad how many grandkids Finwë had but how few children they all had.

House of Finwë Chibi family trees! These are mostly for my own reference/color-picking with my updated designs, but I figured I might as well share. There’s a lot of my headcanons and ocs mixed in with the canons here.

I might make sticker sheets for some of them to sell on Red/bubble if people are interested. Let me know in a comment which if any you’d like.

tanoraqui:

underappreciated tragic irony of The Silmarillion: anydebate about who was Finwë’s heir was at best completely academic (and at worst a frankly awkwardly blatant fight about which son he liked best)…right up until it wasn’t.
