Healers 4 Harvey – New Indie Music Compilation Supports Hurricane Victims
In the last few weeks we’ve seen incredible devastation from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and it seems like there’s more to come. I know that many people in Houston are still struggling to get their lives back after Hurricane Harvey. So I’m pleased to be included in the Healers 4 Harvey compilation. It features over 30 songs from indie artists, mostly women, and all proceeds go to the Houston Food…
Hurricane Maria
I was at my first day of orientation for my new job all day, and then I come home to find out Hurricane Maria is now a cat 5. Praying for all those in her paths, especially those still rebuilding from Irma. So far it’s not supposed to hit Florida, but that’s what they said about Irma too and we got a direct hit. I don’t know who pissed Mother Nature off, but they need to stop. Much love to Dominica and the leeward Islands tonight.
8/29/2017:
Today is the twelfth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. And boy, oh boy, it’s shaping up to be a hard one.Usually, this time of year I write an uplifting post about the spirit of love and the resilience of my beloved NOLA and her unbreakable spirit. I talk about the deeply meaningful life lessons I learned from one of the most challenging experiences I and my loved ones will ever live through. I talk about the community we built for ourselves and the power of laughter and the joy of helping others and finding silver linings in the aftermath of chaos.
But today I woke up for the third time this week to terrifyingly familiar newscasts and bleak weather forecasts from down in Texas and all I’m able to feel is an impotent sense of helplessness in the face of Mother Nature, a sinking feeling of gut-wrenching dread when I think about how little faith I have in the current presidential administration to actually get down there and help, and a homesickness for New Orleans that’s making it hard for me to stop crying.
So today on the twelfth anniversary of Katrina, as Harvey continues to wreak havoc in Houston and across the western side of the Gulf, I’m not looking to the past to how far New Orleans has come and how much I learned. I’m looking to the future, and asking “what can I do to help?”
Here are just a few of the relief efforts and charities that my friends and loved ones are supporting right now. I’m sharing here in case any of my followers are looking for ways to help, also:
-LGBTQ Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund (run by the Montrose Center)
-Feeding Texas (a network of food banks within the state)
-Covenant House Texas
-Coalition for the Homeless
-The Texas Diaper BankKatrina taught me about the power of the individual. It taught me that when governments fail, ordinary people step up. The kindness and decency of other people is what got me through 2005 with enough laughter to balance out the tears. We pulled through, we rebuilt, and we persisted. And so now it’s my time to pay it forward.
Please consider taking a moment today to do something kind for someone who needs it. It would mean a lot to me, and it might change their life.
I never really talk much about my personal life outside of BDSM here, but I feel I need to make this post to give you all an insight to what is going on where I live because of this damn Hurricane.
I live 2 hours away from Houston, which is flooded terribly bad. All the surrounding areas are flooded. We were told we didn’t need to evacuate. I had over 30 friends last nigh asking to be rescued because the flooding got so bad they had to go to their attics and roofs. Out of the 30 friends who needed to be rescued I know for sure that only 10 have been and the rest are still waiting. People have already died from drowning. My moms house is flooded. My best friend is going to get her mom because it is so bad. Buildings where they have set up shelter to keep people safe have now flooded. We are still getting this damn rain.
We have been through so many damn hurricanes but none have ever flooded the areas like this, We need help. We need volunteers and we need awareness spread. It isn’t just Houston. It’s Beaumont, Port Arthur, Port Neches- Groves, Nederland and so many more.
Find out how you can help and help us out. I was thankful enough to live in a part and place that didn’t get flooded. The people across the street weren’t so lucky. I am going to post pictures of the devastation around my hometown next.
No one took this storm as serious as they should’ve.
Hurricane is now a Cat 4 hurricane and moving slowly. Waters are waaaaaarm too. :/
Rain happening here already! Hurricane Harvey is looking super unpredictable which could be good or bad for us depending on what’s going on. But so far everything is fine! We’ve got family around us and we’ve prepared as much as we can. We’ll probably lose power at some point but I’ll post as much as I can.
Massive flooding is predicted and we’ve got tornadoes going on already and a bunch of rain. It’s predicted to dump up to 3 inches of rain just tonight as it makes landfall in Corpus Christi but Texas has been really amazing at preparing for this and they’ve got shelters and military and rescue crews standing by all over the place, prepared for whatever.
Harvey has the potential to go pretty much anywhere in east Texas and dump tons of rain everywhere so if you’re anywhere in the path of the storm please stay safe, make sure you have water, food if power goes out, and a backpack with things like food, clothes, etc. to last 48-72 hours just in case.
Here’s a link reporting at least in the Houston area live on the hurricane if you’re interested in watching! Any good thoughts are appreciated!
So we’re in the Houston, Texas area and we’re preparing for Hurricane Harvey over here! The flooding is the main concern but we’re in a good area so we are already better off but there is still the potential for flooding. There’s also likely to be some power outages and this storm is already predicted to be hovering over us for the next 5 days dropping rain and such. It’s also very unpredictable and keeps moving erratically so we’ll see what happens.
I’ll keep you guys updated as much as I can but for now just know that we are all safe right now!
Texans Being Warned of Increase In Alligators Due to Hurricane Harvey Flooding
An alligator refuge in southeast Texas is warning residents of a possible alligator outbreak as rising floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey risk the escape of roughly 350 gators into the region. Staff at Gator Country in Beaumont, TX have been busy patrolling the watery grounds of the 15-acre preserve as water from Hurricane Harvey’s rain inches closer to the top of fences that enclose the reptiles.…
17 Organizations Where You Can Donate to Harvey Victims & How to Avoid Scams
As floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey continue to plague the city of Houston, TX, many Americans are wondering just how they can help the thousands of victims who were displaced due to the unrelenting rain. Tropical Storm Harvey is expected to produce 7 to 13 more inches of rain through Friday over Texas’ upper coast. Some areas — including the Houston metropolitan area — may see accumulations of…
Houston is still underwater and recovery from Hurricane Harvey will likely take years. But while people are still escaping their flooded homes, House Republicans are looking to cut nearly $1 BILLION from disaster relief funding to pay for Trump’s idiotic and immoral border wall.
House Republicans have done a lot of stupid, tone-deaf things, but this has to be one of the worst. Call your members of Congress and tell them: Don’t cut funding for disaster relief!
Here’s your script: “Hi, my name is [Your Name] and I’m a constituent from [Your Town]. I’m calling because I’m very concerned about the Houses’ proposed omnibus spending bill, which cuts nearly a billion dollars from disaster aid. With so many people displaced by Hurricane Harvey, we shouldn’t be taking away money to help them recover. I hope [Representative So-and-so] will vote against any bill that reduces disaster funding. Thank you.”
