  • To treat common mites, beekeepers coat their bees in powdered sugar. This kills the mites but doesn’t hurt the bees, and they will clean it off anyway. It does, however, make them look like tiny bee ghosts until they groom themselves.
  • Skunks are natural predators of bees. They will grab a mouthful of bees and suck the juices out before spitting out the bees’ carcasses. To keep the skunks from doing this, beekeepers will build their hives high enough that the skunks have to reach their front paws up to get to the hives. This way, their bellies are exposed and the bees are able to fight back and sting them. Either way, bees die.
  • Bees are curious, and they may follow you around for a while just to see what you’re doing. Most bees will trail you for a yard or two, but one breed will stalk you for up to half a mile.

*** bees are curious** that is adorable omg

I would be interested in seeing a skunk grab a mouthful of bees. And i like how bees went from curious to stalking real quick

Okay but no one included a picture of ghost bees soooo here:

GHOST BEES… two of my favourite things, bees and spooky stuff.

You may recall that in September a volcano erupted on the Spanish Island of La Palma.

Many people were forced to flee the area, and among those were a number of beekeepers (La Palma is home to over 100 beekeepers).

Fifty days after the eruption, one beekeeper returned and was amazed to find that the bees in five of his six hives - just 600 metres from the volcano and buried under volcanic ash - had survived.

The bees had sealed any gaps in the hives with propolis to keep toxic fumes out, and relied on honey already stored in their hives for food.

It never ceases to amaze me just how incredible bees are

I think this sedate painting is still my most controversial piece . People either loved the bees&rs

I think this sedate painting is still my most controversial piece . People either loved the bees’ lacy wings or were freaked out by their big bug eyes. It’s a medium-sized watercolor, so of course the bees are larger than life, but not THAT overwhelming.

What is your most controversial work?

weird thought just struck but does anyone else remember that story about how bees were made by satan or a demon or something? It wasn’t even meant like “oh bees are terrible and sting so the devil did that” but rather the story went

The devil was really jealous of god creating all the creatures so he stole some of the hard clay that god used to form them but it was so hard even water wouldn’t make it malleable again and the devil thought he failed and he cried into the clay and his tears were so hot and acid that he could work the clay and so he made a bee but he couldn’t breathe life into it so he finally gave up uttelry defeated.

God found it later and ofc he knew the devil made it but he thought it wasn’t such a bad creature after all so he breathed life into and sent it into the world but because the devil’s tears created it if the bee ever rested too long from its work then it would be overcome by sadness and that is why bees are so “busy”

has anyone else heard this story? what was it even from?

In Egyptian myth Ra cries and his tears land on the sands and become bees, who then fly around everyday acting as the messengers of the gods.
