Outdoor ice rinks work almost the same way freezers work.  The rink is lined with a tightly-wound systems of pipes laid out on a flat base of wood and polyester (to block the ground heat from melting the ice).  Elaborate pump systems circulate a mix of chilled water and antifreeze through the pipes. The chilled mixture cools the area surrounding the pipes. Once the system is in place, the entire rink surface is flooded very slowly so the water freezes around the cooling pipes.  Keeping the ice frozen involves constant adjustment of the coolant temperature in relation to the outside air temperature and weather.

Oops sorry lol, let’s pretend we are still in valentine’s territory. I got super bogged down with school with projects, papers, assignments and midterms and wasn’t able to finish this story until today but here it is now <3

This was inspired by a post by @evil-feather that I saw on January 2nd requesting a fic of y/n teaching Alma to Ice Skate. I’m not super great at it myself so I started off with ice skating then continued on for a full date with y/n and Alma. Hope you enjoy and apologies I wasn’t able to get this out sooner <3

Further I was thinking of starting a tag list at 100 followers (I am close enough) so do comment or let me know if you want to be on that. I write for Alma and Angie as of right now and am planning for Vesper so do specify which characters you want to be on the list for. :)

Brief Description: For valentines day you took Alma out to ice skating and tea for the day while Emma, Olive, and Enoch took care of the kids and dinner preparations. When you got home you were surprised with a cute/romantic dinner for 2 set-up in Alma’s study in which the kids all helped to set up as a surprise.

~~~
It was February 14th, Valentine’s day. You had arranged for Emma, Olive, and Enoch to manage the children and the dinner preparations while you and Alma went out for the night. You had planned to take her ice skating then to tea. Before you left, you made sure Alma was in comfortable clothes, which she had to borrow from you, as her usual apparel wouldn’t be particularly fitting for an ice rink. You had walked to the frozen lake ice rink in Cairnholm, signed the waivers, paid for your and Alma’s skates, then made your way to the cubby area. You had swapped out your shoes and laced your skates rather quickly and helped Alma with hers as she wasn’t used to such laces. “There, that should be comfortable while you skate.” As you looked up at her she leaned down, cupping your cheek in her hand, and planted a light kiss on your forehead, “Thank you love.” You smiled and stood up, offering your hand to her and held onto her arm as you both made it over to the entrance of the rink.
You had stepped onto the ice with Alma, imagining she would be the epitome of grace while you could hardly manage to move quickly without wobbling. However, her usual poise and perfection seemed to escape her in the moment. She immediately grabbed your arm for stability as soon as she stepped onto the ice, no longer having the stability of the padded ground under her feet. As well as she could walk in heels, two blades on the slippery ice were no comparison. You held around her waist causing her to look up at you with slight crimson creeping up her neck and onto her cheeks. Never did you imagine you’d see her perfection and poise falter but in this moment you did. You stifled a giggle and the crimson on her face deepened, “what?!” she remarked in a mix of annoyance and confusion. “You’re just cute, that’s all.” She huffed at your statement as you pulled her upright, arm still around her waist. “Here, hold onto me. Bend your knees a bit and lean to the right first, moving your foot out a bit, then to the left. Relax and let me lead until you are comfortable.” There remained a light blush on Alma’s face from the close proximity of your bodies as you moved across the ice. You both swayed to the light music playing from the speakers fastened to the wooden poles structuring the rink. After a bit Alma had finally relaxed in your arms as the two of you rhythmically glided under the lights strung above the ice. It had soon begun to rain and skating seemed to get easier as the water droplets falling from the sky evened out the rink. “Do you want to keep skating?” you asked her as she looked up at the sky. “You know a little rain doesn’t bother me.” she scoffed playfully as the two of you continued skating in sync.
It was nearing 4:00pm when the two of you finally made your way off the rink. The rain had lightened but as Alma joined you to return your skates you held an umbrella over her head. You pulled her close as the two of you left the rink and started walking down the town’s main road. “y/n where are we walking? The loop entrance is that way.” she asked as she gestured to the other side of the island. “Well, it wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you that now would it?” you replied with a playful smirk, earning a huff and an eye roll from Alma.
In about 3 minutes you had arrived at a tea shop where you had made reservations a few days prior and requested a special set-up at your reserved table. You walked to the attendant, giving him your name, and he walked you over to a private room table with rose petals sprinkled over the white table cloth. You pulled a soft cushioned seat out for Alma and she sat down as she gazed up at you, “Darling, you did all this?”. You sat down as you replied, “Well technically I just requested for the special setup. The lovely staff here are the ones that made it happen.” Her eyebrows furrowed, “Merci ma amore, you didn’t have to do all this.” She smiled as you reached over to cup her cheek in your hand, “I wanted to chérie.” The waiter arrived with the tea and treats you had selected prior: Earl gray and blackberry tea with hints of cocoa and a tray of teal colored lemon-caramel macarons. She seemed surprised as the waiter poured tea into your cups as there was never even a menu brought. “I pre-ordered so we wouldn’t be late for dinner and reset, I know how on schedule you like to be.” She looked at you and smiled, blowing on her tea to cool it before taking a sip. You noticed her visibly relax as you grabbed a macaron and started on your own cup of tea. “How did you think of such a mix of tea?” she asked as she took a macaron. “I took your favorite, then added a couple additional flavors that seemed fitting and reminded me of you; for the tea and the macarons.” She smiled, gazing softly at you, “Well it is a lovely combination.” The two of you sat comfortably in light discussion as you finished your tea and macarons and at precisely 5pm, you both left the tea shop, thanking the staff, and made your way back to the loop.
Walking back up to the house, you opened the door for her to walk in and were automatically greeted by Claire running up and hugging you with Bronwyn, Hugh and the twins in tow. Emma walked into the hallway, “Just in time for supper. How was your date?” You looked up at her, setting Claire down, “It was lovely, thank you for managing the house while we were out.” “Of course,” she said with a smile. “Speaking of, while you were out, Olive, Enoch and I set something up for you. It is in the study, I do hope you don’t mind Miss Peregrine.” You took Alma’s hand and walked into her book-filled study, to see a table for two set up in the glass semi circle at the end of the study with a white tablecloth and candles which were currently being lit by Olive. The rest of the elegant, vintage furniture had been moved to the sides of the room  in front of the book shelves built into the walls as well as the tall windowed doors. Alma cupped her hands over her mouth, left speechless from such a sweet gesture. Enoch and Jake entered and pulled out the two seats for you and Alma to sit.
Not a moment after you both took your seats, Claire and Fiona came walking in with two bouquets of freshly picked and de-thorned roses, each bundled together with a navy blue satin ribbon. You smiled as you took one, Alma doing the same, the both of you thanking Claire as she looked at you, happy to have completed her task. “Thank you Claire, Fiona, these truly are the most beautiful roses I have ever received”, at a whisper tone you leaned over closer to them, “And I don’t think I have ever seen Miss Peregrine so speechless so props to that.” They both giggled as they dashed off, out the grand oak doors and back to the kitchen. Moments later the twins entered each with a filled dish and as they walked up to the table to serve you and Alma, Horace came in to set a record on Alma’s vintage gramophone and start the track at a light volume purely for background purposes. You both thanked the three children and as the twins toddled off and Horace walked out with his usual elegance. Right as you turned back to Alma, Emma walked in with a fresh pitcher of tea and poured a glass for the both of you before leaving the pitcher on a small oak table near the one they had set up. “If you need anything we’ll be in the dining room. And don’t worry about us, Olive, Enoch and I have everything else under control and on schedule so you two enjoy your dinner.” “Thank you Emma, we will see you at reset.” Alma said before Emma exited the room and closed the oak doors to a crack. The two of you had an hour to enjoy each other’s company before the nightly reset. The room was quiet save for the light pitter patter of the rain and the subtle music playing from the gramophone. You spoke once more holding up your crystal glass, “Happy Valentine’s Day ma faucon cherie.” She brought her glass up clinking it to yours, “Happy Valentine’s Day ma belle.”
