————————

Formula One (also known as Formula 1 or F1) is the highest class of international racing for open-wheel single-seater formula racing cars sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The World Drivers’ Championship, which became the FIA Formula One World Championship in 1981, has been one of the premier forms of racing around the world since its inaugural season in 1950. The word formula in the name refers to the set of rules to which all participants’ cars must conform. A Formula One season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix, which take place worldwide on both purpose-built circuits and closed public roads.

You started working with the NCT team as a paid content creator. Meaning you just followed them around taken footage to use to post on their social media. Now you are the public relations manager, this was gonna be your first season as PR manager. Almost your fourth season with the team though. And of course this is a big season for NCT, they’re in the running for winning the constructors this season.

NCT had two perfect drivers, both on their fourth season with the team. Lee Jeno and Na Jaemin, both drivers, performed amazingly last season. NCT had only lost the constructors championship by 15 points last season, which is the closest they had gotten in over the 8 years of being in Formula 1.

The first race of the season was set to happen this weekend. Jaemin and Jeno were already going through testing in Bahrain. You had just arrived at the paddock in time for the drivers press conference. Jaemin was set to go first, he would be accompanied by the Mclaren’s Norris, and Ferrai’s Leclerc.

-

“I have a question for Jaemin,” the reporter raising his hand started off, “NCT is expecting their first constructors, should we also expect you for your first drivers championship this season?”

Jaemin laughed, he had this dazzling smirk displayed, “only time can tell. We’re just gonna race one race at a time.” Perfect, Jaemin gave a respectable answer, that should not cause any controversy.

You gave a small thumbs up to Jaemin, to which he responded back with a smile. You stayed for the rest of the press conference, in which Jaemin was perfect at every question. He kept his answers short, didn’t disrespect anyone, used all the proper language. You thought if everyone else could do the same for the rest of the season, your job is gonna be easy.

-

Now it was time for Jeno’s press conference, he was joined by Mercedes’ Russell, and RedBull’s Verstappen. “I have a question for Jeno. Your contract is up at the end of the season, are we gonna see some seating changes?”

Jeno laughed, “isn’t it a bit early,” he spoke with a tone of disbelief. You cringed at his responses, he wasn’t wrong but you feared how the reporter would explain what he says, “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, but I don’t know yet to be bluntly honest. Me, and my team are aware that my contract is up at the end of the season, but we haven’t begun contract talks yet. We’re just here to race and win this weekend.” You let out a breath at Jeno’s explanation.

He almost gave you a heart attack with that, but you looked at the reporter and he seemed to take Jeno’s answer nicely. You reminder yourself to have a talk with Jeno, that no matter how stupid the question is, we need to answer in the nicest possible way.

-

It was Sunday, race day. You stood in the paddock staring at one of the screens watching both boys line up for the race. Jeno had P3 and Jaemin was P4. Either boys finished as high up as they wanted but P3 and P4 was a good starting place.

“And it’s lights out in Bahrain,” the announcer said through the tv screen. Jeno had a good start, easily pulling away, gaining an early lead in the race. Jaemin ended up falling behind to P6.

You sat on the edge of your seat watching the two boys, your heart pounding in your chest. You, Jaemin and Jeno all started with NCT during the same season. The three of you came in all wide eye rookies in your own respective fields. Now you guys are nearing the top.

You didn’t care who won the race as long as it was one of them. As long as it was one of your boys that held the trophy, you were gonna be happy.

[ 2:02pm ] this is pt.5 of my enemy!jaemin series

enemy!jaemin has a singular question banging around the walls of his brain, and it’s giving him a throbbing headache in the middle of class.

and the question is: what happened?

your sudden disappearance from yesterday’s basketball game is still unexplained, and his whole body is twitching to interrogate you as you sit next to him, innocently twirling your pencil in your hand. the curiosity was hurling endless possibilities at the back of his head, making him unable to focus on whatever the teacher was saying about Shakespeare.

maybe what was more mysterious was the fact that today you seem so unbothered. you had walked into class without a single mention of the game, insulted him on his outfit today per usual, and have been paying close attention to the lesson even until now.

he wants to shake your shoulders and demand you tell him what happened that afternoon, to bribe ryujin to give him some hints, to get first-hand knowledge by being there as you walked into the gymnasium. but you don’t even consider him as a friend as far as he knows, and you two aren’t close enough for him to just point out that he was paying close attention to you… as a concerned friend, of course.

maybe it’s a relief that whatever happened wasn’t devastating enough for it to bother you over the span of 24 hours. he’s happy that you seem happy, but not because he’s like obsessed or anything, but because he’s a good person who wants to see everybody in a positive mood. yeah. that’s why.

just when his mind is about to further convince himself of this reason, he feels something poking his back.

“what do you want?” he monotonously asks without turning around.

“i’m bored,” jeno complains while incessantly jabbing his best friend.

“you win one game and you’re already restless,” jaemin sighs, while subtly eyeing for any sort of reaction from you at the mention of the basketball game, but to no avail. are you really okay?

the poking finally stops as jeno rescinds his hand so he can cockily lean on it instead. “that’s right. yesterday’s game was so easy that the boredom has carried on to today.”

jaemin chuckles at the captain’s exaggeration and turns in his chair to dap him up. at this point, you would normally scoff at their ridiculousness from the side. but this time, you maintained your silence. weird. this causes jaemin’s smile to slightly falter, because for some reason he can’t explain, he actually WANTS you to tease him and make fun of him.

the cocky boy continues the conversation, “aren’t you bored from that game too?”

“why would i be?” jaemin incredulously denies. “are you implying that i wasn’t enjoying watching my boyfriend win?” but he knows jeno was right, as he really wasn’t able to focus after you had left the game. he didn’t think that jeno would be able to catch on.

“i don’t know, you just seemed a little spaced out,” jeno admits with genuine concern. “i’m sorry the game was so easy… i didn’t expect it at all. i thought they were one of the best teams in our district? i guess the good ones graduated already.”

now jaemin is feeling guilty. he should’ve been more supportive, and now his best friend was feeling sorry because of it. but before he can apologize, jeno pipes up again.

“hey,” he lightly punches jaemin’s shoulder. “how can you even be bored when you were with that cute ass girl?”

from the corner of his eye, jaemin notices how your pencil immediately stops twirling at this question.

“boys, eyes up front!” the teacher loudly calls out, causing jaemin’s body to take a swift 180 to face the board.

the class is completely silent after this, which makes jaemin cringe at the realization of how loud he was probably being. after a few more minutes of pretending to pay attention, he gets bored and decides to see if he can get anything out of you.

“how was the game?” he tries to ask casually.

you give him an annoyed glance. “eyes up front, remember?”

the sneaky boy shifts his gaze from your face to the teacher and repeats himself, “how was the game?”

you sigh and pause for several seconds, which makes jaemin wonder why you have to be so careful about answering the question. “i didn’t even go,” you confessed. “i had to leave because…”

“JAEMIN, IF I CATCH YOU TALKING ONE MORE TIME-”

both of you flinch at the teacher’s loud scolding and instantly get back to “work.” in his head, jaemin is thrashing around in frustration. he was so close, but so far. if he has to wait any longer to know just what the hell happened yesterday, he’s going to stroll into a mental institution and sign his name up.

if i ask tomorrow it’ll be too suspicious, he realizes. this is the only chance i have.

jaemin waits several more minutes (although it feels like an eternity) while closely eyeing the teacher. finally, the teacher wraps up the lesson and announces that everybody quietly work on their own.

almost immediately, he turns his head to you and asks, “so what was it you were saying?”

you stifle a laugh at how quick he was to jump on the conversation again, which makes him beam inside.

“i had to leave because something came up.”

he’s thinking about calling the nearest mental institution and seeing if they have room for him.

“oh,” he says in an intrigued tone as if this was new information. “that’s a shame.”

you nod your head without elaborating.

he wonders if there are any mental institutions within 20 miles of his house so his mom won’t miss him too much.

“did you realize you had a test tomorrow or something?” he tries to scoop an explanation from you.

“yeah, something like that.”

he wonders how many friends he can make at the psychiatric ward.

“JAEMIN, what did i say about not talking?” the teacher abruptly stands up from his desk with daggers shooting from his eyes. jaemin’s head perks up in alarm and quickly defends himself, “i wasn’t-”

“(y/n)…” the scary man continues.

(this was your turn to perk your head up)

“…don’t you dare think you’re off the hook either,” he points a threatening finger at you. you’re about to open your mouth to also defend yourself, but before you can even let out a noise, he says the d-word.

“detention both of you!”

the classroom silently watches this unfold as you sit there in absolute horror. on the flip side, jaemin barely gives a shit, as he’s almost always in the principal’s custody due to his mischievousness. if anything, he’s more worried about you—you’ve NEVER gotten disciplined by the school before.

when the teacher sits back down and the atmosphere calms down, you rub your temples in frustration. “this is all your fault,” you breathe.

“you shouldn’t have responded to me then,” jaemin bites back in a hushed tone, although he genuinely feels bad for dragging you into this.

you slump onto your desk in frustration. “i can’t believe i have to be in the same room as you for an hour.”

“look forward to it sweetie,” the annoying boy sings… although for some reason… he feels like he’s the one who’s excited for it.
