Batteries have an important role as energy sources with environmental advantages. They offset the negative environmental impacts of fossil fuels or nuclear-based power; they are also recyclable. These attributes have led to increasing research with the aim of improving battery design and environmental impact, particularly regarding their end of life. In addition, there is a desire to improve battery safety as well as design batteries from more sustainable and less toxic materials.

Electric Vehicle

New research shows that aluminium battery could offer several advantages:

Aluminium metal anode batteries could hold promise as an environmentally friendly and sustainable replacement for the current lithium battery technology. Among aluminium’s benefits are its abundance, it is the third most plentiful element the Earth’s crust.

To date aluminium anode batteries have not moved into commercial use, mainly because using graphite as a cathode leads to a battery with an energy content which is too low to be useful.

This is promising for future research and development of aluminium as well as other metal-organic batteries.

Battery Charging

New UK battery project is said to be vital for balancing the country’s electricity demand

Work has begun on what is said to be Europe’s biggest battery. The 100MW Minety power storage project, which is being built in southwest England, UK, will comprise two 50MW battery storage systems. The project is backed by China Huaneng Group and Chinese sovereign wealth fund CNIC.

Shell Energy Europe Limited (SEEL) has agreed a multi-year power offtake agreement which will enable the oil and gas major, along with its recently acquired subsidiary Limejump, to optimise the use of renewable power in the area.

Renewable power

In a statement David Wells, Vice President of SEEL said ‘Projects like this will be vital for balancing the UK’s electricity demand and supply as wind and solar power play bigger roles in powering our lives.

Battery

The major hurdles for battery design, states the EU’s document, include finding suitable materials for electrodes and electrolytes that will work well together, not compromise battery design, and meet the sustainability criteria now required. The process is trial and error, but progress is being made.

Happy #WorldSnakeDay! To mark the occasion, I have just released this new poster showing 13 of the 19 genera of pseudoxyrhophiid snakes from Madagascar! These snakes are really amazing, showcasing the evolutionary potential of the snake bauplan, and occupying niches from slug-eating to egg-eating, vince-snakes to racers, and everything in between.

NJ Microbe news coverage!

While Drs Eveleigh and  Warhol were at the Eagleton workshop, the Rutgers Daily Targum (university newspaper) ran a cover story on our efforts to get an Official State Microbe  for New Jersey!  Great timing!

Drs Warhol and Eveleigh at Eagleton Workshop

John Warhol and Doug Eveleigh participated in the Scientists in Politics workshop at the Eagleton Institute on Nov 29. It was a great networking experience and we were able to share our experience with getting a State Microbe with the other attendees. Great news is that now Chancellor Molloy has his own  Periodic Table of Microbes poster for his office wall!

75th anniversary of streptomycin is coming up. Get ready for a celebration!

University of the Sciences Presentation

Wow, my name in lights!

I had a great time talking to students and faculty at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on Oct 25. Topics were the New Jersey State Microbe, and my book, Dr Warhol’s Periodic Table of Microbes, The Small Guide to Small Things. Both topics hinge on effective science communication, a concept woven throughout the presentation. The skills and tactics needed to effectively interact with the nonscientific public, legislators, and scientists outside of your own discipline were all part of the lively seminar.

Thank you for inviting me, USciences!

The NJ State Microbe will be part of the New Jersey Historical Commission Forum on Popular Culture in New Jersey on November 2.  A great opportunity to inform more people about microbiology. We’re also presenting on the 75th anniversary of streptomycin, the world’s first broad spectrum antibiotic, discovered right here in New Jersey.

No doubt, we’ll also talk about the Periodic Table of Microbes, The Small Guide to Small Things. https://tinyurl.com/Warhol-Small-Guide

Microbiologists are dismayed, far and wide.

Although the bog turtle never saved anyone’s life, (unlike the microbe) they are visible without a microscope and had the support of school kids.

Here are a few articles about relatively recent paleo news that I found worth sharing; but since this is Instagram aka The Land of No Links, you get screenshots. I figure a quick web search will get you whatever more you wish to read.

Valerie L. Thomas is a physicist and inventor, best known for her creation of the illusion transmitter, for which she holds the patent, while working for NASA in the 1970s-80s.

This technology uses two concave mirrors to create 3D optical illusion images, which has been adapted for use in surgery imaging as well as the television and film industry.

During her 30-year career at NASA Valerie Thomas oversaw multiple innovative projects, including the creation of the Landsat program, the longest-running enterprise to obtain satellite imagery of Earth.

Her expertise and creative thinking have advanced our understanding of the universe and influenced the construction of imaging technology that remains impactful to this day.

Dr. Minnie Joycelyn Elders is an army veteran, pediatric endocrinologist, and public health administrator who was appointed the first African American Surgeon General of the United States by Bill Clinton in 1993.

Her outspoken views on female reproductive rights and science-based sex education in high schools made her a controversial public figure, prompting massive backlash from conservative parties of the time.

After her resignation as Surgeon General in 1994, Elders returned to her former position as professor of pediatric endocrinology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences where she is currently a professor emeritus and remains active in public health education.

You can learn more about Dr. Elders in her 1996 autobiography, Joycelyn Elders, M.D.: From Sharecropper’s Daughter to Surgeon General of the United States of America.

Pursuing her passion for the ocean, Dr. Murrell investigated different coral species, specifically deep-sea button coral. Working at the Smithsonian, Joan identified a new family of corals, the Rhombopsammia genus, and discovered three new button coral species.

To close out #PrideMonth, we’re celebrating the work of Dr. Alan Hart: physician, radiologist, scientist, and writer. Dr. Hart is one of the first individuals to undergo a female to male transition, pioneering in every facet of his life.

After obtaining his medical degree @OHSU in 1917, Dr. Hart decided to undergo hormone therapy for female to male transition. While this change was one of the happiest choices he made, he faced difficulties in maintaining a job due to his transition.

Dr. Hart continued to pursue medicine and focused on tackling one of the deadliest diseases at the time, tuberculosis (TB). Dr. Hart became interested in using X-rays as a way to detect TB and created TB screening clinics which helped detect and treat patients.

To address the growing spread of TB, Dr. Hart wrote medical articles on TB detection. He also promoted awareness of TB through #scicomm pop press articles targeting the public. Thank you Dr. Hart for your dedication and remarkable work!
