#johnny depp
I have, for all this time, followed one very loud dissenting voice on Twitter vis a vis Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard, in the sense that they believe she’s another victim of MeToo Hollywood-standard domestic abuse, whose voice is being silenced by the law, whereas everyone else seems to agree that Heard is herself a heartless abuser leveraging the law, the media, and the silence around male victims of domestic abuse to her own advantage.
I confess, I really really try to understand this dissenting voice, but I don’t.
I don’t understand from where the impression comes that Depp committed not only any domestic violence, but most of it. Perhaps, at a pinch, I could believe they were both awful, but that means she is just as guilty as he is.
I don’t understand why the instinctive reaction of those pundits is that women can never talk about domestic violence ever again if Depp wins. More to the point, if women can just claim abuse at any time and be believed intuitively, I don’t see a way forward for men to talk about domestic violence if they cannot do it by bringing witness statements, police reports, security footage, physical evidence, evidence to dispute the opposing side’s existing claims… you know, even if you disregard the truth of the matter, all those ‘implications for future conversations about domestic violence’ cut both ways!
For god’s sake, by the cold light of day Amber Heard’s bruises vanish, but Johnny Depp is still missing a finger! Are we really, as a society, going to look ourselves in the eye and say “I believe that Depp was the abuser and that his missing finger must be entirely his own fault, no other explanation is possible”?? Consider the implications of THAT for future domestic violence cases!
I just think Amber Heard might have been entirely the wrong horse to back in this instance.
Something something sunk cost fallacy.
Whether or not you care abt the heard/depp trial, the fact that the jurors weren’t isolated and so saw the thousands of memes and tiktoks abt the trial and then found in favor of depp will lead directly to abusers threatening their victims with legal action should they speak up. Death to celebrity culture.
the depp. heard trial, by the way, is not about whether AH is guilty or innocent of committing specific acts of domestic violence. it is not about whether depp is guilty or innocent of committing specific acts of domestic violence.
it is about whether or not a person is allowed to write publicly about their experience. if you think people shouldn’t be allowed to write publicly about their experiences of domestic violence unless their abusers were criminally convicted, you are absolutely going to silence many many many many many victims.

it will always be insane to me how the gen-z “kill your rapist ” “kill all men” “woody allen die” girlies are the ones screaming at amber heard supporters on the internet like “how can you support her when there’s so much evidence against her?? there’s literally tapes of her insulting him and admitting to hitting him!!” like oh I’m sorry i didn’t realize it was cool to ~*kill*~ your rapist and abuser but not to hit him back or tell him to go fuck himself
This is why I love psychology so much. The forensic psychologist testifying at the moment is reading A.H. like an open book and it is fascinating to me that throughout this trial, A.H has been illustrating so many of those characteristics the psychologist has referenced thus far.
“Tell the world, Johnny, tell them, ‘Johnny Depp, I, a man, I’m a victim too of domestic violence’ and see how many people believe or side with you.”
Happy OFMD season 2 renewal day

the way in ten years when this situation has been britneyified people who are in my replies right now saying “umm did she not literally cut his finger off????” will be on twitter lecturing me about how “we were ALL complicit in the abuse of amber heard ✊” and people making youtube videos with “expert” analysis of ambers body language and facial expressions to prove that she’s a liar are gonna be making videos like “how johnny depp tricked us all ”… insanity. girl when that time comes speak for your fucking self because we were not ALL gullible misogynists
Amber Heard was in preschool the first time Johnny Depp was arrested for assault and he’s spent the three decades since then getting arrested and accused of assault and violent rages over and over again while talking about his persistent drug and alcohol abuse and people are still looking at this case like “hmm I dunno maybe Gone Girl is real????”
AH needs to understand the difference between freedom of speech and making up lies to ruin a man’s life. The verdict isn’t a setback for women. Her lies are what made it harder for women to be believed. This has proven that both women and men can be victims of abuse, and when you come forward, do it with the truth.
