The AU episode was great and many people talk about it as of late but even with a different beginning Lucifer and Chloe’s choices would be the same eventually. What Dad said in 3x26 it’s true no matter how much you shake things up some people keep making the same choices.
When Season 6 ended I decided to rewatch 3x26 because it held many hints and as such I always liked to go back to that particular episode at any given chance.
Now when I watch that episode I think of how the writers decided to end S6 but also how they laid out some core questions in the last words of God in 3x16.
‘Choices is a funny thing. Give someone different options, different circumstances will themselves end up different?’
Think about these words.
Dad left and said you will figure this out but he made a choice that changed everything. He left. The same thing was supposed to happen with Lucifer. Would people end up different due to their own choices and the choices others make? Certainly.
No amount of therapy or advice could change the fact that Lucifer took a leap of faith with his relationship with Chloe in S5. Additionally the choice to leave Earth was not his own but the choice to respect the fact that Rory would stay the same was. For a person who hated being imposed by life altering events it was an understandable choice.
‘Sure they might end up with a different job. Find inspiration from different people. But will they still be the same person at their core?’
Dad’s words hit home here for Lucifer as Lucifer in his core has remained the same but his reasoning and empathy have indeed changed. So it’s a matter of processing that can make the difference. Giving in to time and analysis it’s only natural to lead you to a different path.
Lucifer realised in 6x08 that he didn’t want to become God. At the same time he ended up with a different job well same job different job description. His inspiration came from Rory but he did remain the same. However inspiration does not always struck twice hence Rory’s fears.
‘Some may continue down a darker path, never knowing there was a different way, the potential buried down but still there.’
This for me was mainly for Rory. Potential can be good and bad. Lucifer grew up indeed with absent parents and we do not know what would have happened if himself had taken The Throne. Every child swears they will be different but we saw something important that Rory had the same potential Lucifer had. The one to make all the bad choices
Dan had the potential to be a good cop but without a family he ended up being a dirty one but at what cost for him and Charlotte? So let’s think teh reverse. Rory with a family. No matter how we might believe that Lucifer would have made the right choices. That Chloe would have managed to make the same choices she did with Rory while Lucifer was absent it simply would not have worked out. We become the people we are because of the people we have in our lives and the ones we do not. The forced choices, the ones we make in the presence and absence of people in our lives whether good or bad.
I’m not saying Lucifer would have been a bad parent. Just that potential good or bad can be also triggered by good or bad experiences and the thing is that you do not need only bad experiences to make bad choices of good experiences to make good choices. They help sure but in Rory’s case imagine this.
A child that felt abandoned and her whole life felt like a monster like her father had such a positive and gentle nature when it mattered. In any given universe led by Lucifer’s choices. she would have had that nature as well but like with Ella we all have darkness and light within us. We do not know when each will conquer but we can hope there will be someone there to help us. Like Dan did with Ella. Rory’s choice was at 10th and Swanson. That was her key moment and the one that diffused probably all other future choices that could have led her on being consumed by guilt.
‘Some make immoral choices instead of moral ones. But they will still have the same conscience. The question is, will they ever make the choice to listen to it?’
This is basically what I’m talking about. We are the same people in our core but what choices are made by us and the ones around us tend to lead us to different paths where the voice of our conscience grows louder, is but a whisper or is silenced indefinitely.
Rory could have killed Lucifer that very first night but that was not who she was. Sometimes I remember of Chloe and her instance to play by the rules was something that Rory grew up with. Again I’m not saying that Lucifer would have been a bad parent but like Chloe lost John Decker and that shaped her to the woman we know and Lucifer fell for* that’s how Lucifer’s loss from Rory’s life shaped her.
*Sure Lucifer did have a deep connection with Chloe in 3x26 but as it was said certain people make the same choices they do not stray too much from a certain path. So could have Rory been the same? Remained unchanged? In 3x26 AU Rory would not have had Trixie or her support group so probably she would have not been the same person. In ‘our’ universe change would have been inevitable as Dad explains in the beginning of 3x26. ‘A butterfly flaps its wings and two good friends are strangers now’
‘And sometimes, it isn’t the right moment in someone’s life to make a certain choice. And no matter how badly you want to nudge them in the right direction, you know they need to find it on their own.’
It would have been easy for Dad to give all the answers but like Linda they do not give the answers but the questions. Rory’s power seemed to be a subconscious choice very much like Lucifer’s were in certain times and everything was fueled by choices at the right time but there was never a right time. Even Lucifer’s choice to leave it certainly didn’t happen at the right time. Yes, he could have waited perhaps but perhaps a choice becomes right the moment you find that choice and it can overpower all others.
Like Chloe taking the reigns and stopping Lucifer from staying any further, making sure he followed that path. In the end it was his promise but her choice. It was not just about Lucifer. I wonder if Lucifer would have stayed if Chloe had a different opinion. I mean in S6 Lucifer agreed with Rory that somehow he would leave but also as long as Chloe was adamant he would not he tried everything to not to. Even at the very end at the piano he would have stayed if she had not told him otherwise based on the shake of their child.
‘And some people find love in the strangest of situations and are somehow happier for it.’
In 3x26 the words were about a couple that would live probably a long life on Earth. They would live comfortably with Lucifer’s money and one day they would have died. Both would have ended up in Hell separated for eternity.
Lucifer and Chloe on the other hand were separated on Earth but would remain together for eternity. And yes somehow they are happier for it despite the pain and the loss of many-many years the possibility of being reunited eventually. Additionally, when that happened the child they once knew was alive and well. Exactly how she was supposed to be and I hear that adds up a lot to a parent’s happiness.
‘And some no matter how much you shake things up, end up making the same choices, are drawn to the same people, the same passions.’
That’s what perhaps must stay with us. In every universe Lucifer and Chloe would make the same choices eventually. Different beginnings does not mean a different ending or eternity for some. They are the lucky few I guess. Just Lucifer and Chloe that is because as we saw no one else in that universe could escape the creation of different paths and choices aside from them.
Perhaps in the AU universe they had two children, Trixie first then Rory but Rory again had to be ‘abandoned’.
In any case what Dad says that eventually Lucifer and Chloe would end up being together for all eternity and that somehow Lucifer would have again ended up in the job description we saw him in 6x10.
Some may wonder if that’s true then Rory could have not left. Lucifer would have eventually made that connection. Perhaps yes but Rory would have not been the same whatever that meant for the universe. A rebel Angel is never a good idea and there are just so many ways to tackle one so I guess what we saw was the best possible scenario for everyone despite everything.

Sharing my belated one-shot for Whumptober again. I will never get enough of Mycroft and John snarking at one another…
When Mycroft Holmes finds himself on John Watson’s doorstep after Sherlock’s (miraculous, melodramatic) return, he wonders at himself. He doesn’t do this, groundwork.
This is Sherlock’s mess, not his (lies), but he feels inexplicably compelled to defend his blasted brother. To John Watson, of all people.
