Happy #NationalDogDay!
Kate had many wonderful dogs throughout her life worth mentioning but a certain one deserves an individual post - Lobo, the dog she shared with Spencer Tracy. During the semi-retirement she took to care for Spencer, Katharine came home with energetic and faithful Lobo to keep up his spirits.
Although never the same after Spence died, Lobo loved to still ride in the back of the Thunderbird and be anywhere with Kate when she was home, as you can see in these photos from my personal collection!
Taken in California in September 1969 by Frank Diernhammer, Kate & Lobo relax in the woods after a walk.

“The photo session took place in Paris. I tried to look stylish – I wore a pink polo shirt and wore wide green trousers. When I started taking pictures of Ms Hepburn, I heard a strange sound - the moment I squatted, my pants were torn. Ms Hepburn started laughing out loud, so the photographs came out just great.” - André Perlstein about photographing Katharine Hepburn in Paris at the Bristol Hotel. Born on this day: Ethel Barrymore! Katharine was a great admirer of all of the Barrymore family members but cherished her friendship with Ethel Barrymore that began thanks to knowing George Cukor so closely -
Kate spent very meaningful time reading & talking with Ethel towards the end of Ethel’s life: “I would go away and I’d always come back. And people would say to me, ‘You’re so nice to go and call on Ethel.’ And I would think, ‘How lucky I am to be able to see Ethel!’ I always had a feeling of elevation at having been with her. Every time I went I would look at her and think, ‘I might never see you again.’ And yet there she was, sitting up in bed and looking as though something wonderful was in her future.”
Here is a treat for fans: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ radio broadcast for Ethel Barrymore’s 70th birthday celebration (August 15th 1949) The broadcast, split into three parts in order to fit the video requirements on Instagram, was recorded mostly at George Cukor’s MGM office and included numerous celebrities who wanted to say a few words for their dear friend; the photo attached to the audio was taken at the celebration George Cukor had for Ethel’s 70th, days prior to the 15th.

Today’s post features some wonderful rare shots during filming of GRACE QUIGLEY (1984) by photographer John Seakwood.
“I remember Kate as someone who defied all the stereotypes. She was in her late 70s when I photographed her, but her remarkable vitality was quite evident. Shunning her private trailer, she had her makeup and hair people set her up outside in the sunshine or when we were working below ground in a remote NYC subway station, right down on the platform with the rest of the crew. A few weeks after we finished shooting, I received an envelope with Katharine Hepburn’s name on the return address. Perhaps a letter from her secretary asking me to send some photos? I opened the letter to find that Kate had sent me a personal, handwritten thank you note!” - Photographer John Seakwood (2014 - Attached is the photo of the note also)
Although remembered as being tough, those who worked with Katharine always tell of how gracious she was to crew members, including photographer Mr. Seakwood - Always be nice to your fellow man.

Friend George Cukor actually there on one of those antsy nights Katharine had and promptly went back stage to tell her how lousy she was, with her agreeing.
To calm her nerves on opening night in New York, Kate stated that she did not stay at her New York townhouse but instead at a hotel and avoided all telegrams since they could contain mention of her performances.

18 years since the world lost #KatharineHepburn —
I’m using this somber day to show a small preview of the contents in this amazing giant binder I recently added to my KH collection! I’m always at peace surrounded by her. ❤️
Complete with sheets of negatives, this binder is an archive of John Bryson’s photography - proof sheets, letters, etc…just a collection of never before seen things that I will one day take a full video of when I show my other binders I have of KH items! Bryson worked on The Private World of Katharine Hepburn book with KH and was one of her favorite photographers.
This is a collector’s dream to own this and while I have posted a photo from the sheets of outtakes already on @katharinehhep (and may occasionally do so?) I cannot share each one, as these are shots she didn’t expect to all be published. There are over 10+ signed items by KH to JB and also two giant framed signed photos I won in a lot from the same auction! Swipe for a precious surprise at the end.
Thank you Kate for making your way into my life the way you have and staying with me always - how I miss you every single day.

Vogue, June 1933: “Here is cinema’s latest meteor, Miss Katharine Hepburn, who somehow manages to look like a forthright, clean-cut American girl, a Michael Arlen heroine, and an enigmatic Garbo rolled into one — wearing two decidedly new fashions. You see her leaning on Colwell’s crystal console, in a very sophisticated tea gown — a long trailing Roman striped chiffon coat over a trailing slip of raspberry chiffon, tied snugly at the waist. The jewels are from Mauboussin. From the worldly tea-gown is the naïve summer evening dress Miss Hepburn wears. It closes at the throat and covers the shoulders with hundreds of petals – like a baby’s party dress – but there’s plenty of allure. Made of organza, white with navy blue squares, it ties at the neckline and tightly around the waistline with blue grosgrain ribbon.” Fashions worn by KH in these two Steichen photographs are by Hattie Carnegie and Fortnum & Mason.

“You just cannot believe it — here — gone — it is so sad — all the years — all the shared struggles” - KH in a letter to a friend 6 days after ST’s death, 1967.
On this day, Katharine Hepburn was just inches away from the kitchen when she heard Spencer Tracy collapse on the floor and pass away in the early morning of June 10th - Kate put Spence in bed with help from the housekeeper and gardener, “I drew up the covers and lit the candles. He looked so happy to be done with living, which for all his accomplishments had been a frightful burden to him. So quiet. He who had turned and turned in that bed. No one able to help him really. One builds one’s own jail. I never knew him, I think. And he is the only one who ever really knew me—“ KH described in Me: Stories of My Life. 3 AM PST was the mark of the end of their many shared moments.

“I wish I could tell it all — I’ve been everything to him, you know, including nurse, but it wouldn’t be fair.” - KH about ST to Roy Newquist on set of GWCTD (Quoted in Newquist’s own column, The Park Forest Star, December 1971)
Today, June 9th, is the last day #KatharineHepburn unknowingly had with #SpencerTracy.
Roy Newquist wrote a wonderful book (A Special Kind of Magic) containing interviews from on set of GUESS WHOS COMING TO DINNER and was somebody Kate could really confide in; UCLA holds the private tapes of his interviews, which feature audio clips of Tracy & Hepburn behind the scenes!
In a private handwritten letter sent to Newquist in reply to his condolences, KH remarked once again about the 26 years she spent with Tracy, stating: “Someday I suppose I’ll try to do a book – but it would involve others + it is awkward”
Many others received a similar reply when asked about her writing the story of life with Spencer while Louise Tracy was still alive - Thankfully, Katharine DID write a book decades later when she realized nobody would get hurt anymore by what it contained.

1941- Katharine Hepburn and Van Heflin coming down the balcony steps of the Hollywood Theater after watching Heflin’s performance in “Santa Fe Trail.”
Kate helped start Heflin’s career in the very forgettable film A WOMAN REBELS (1936) and the two remained friends, eventually playing in THE PHILADELPHIA STORY together on stage - The pair was whisked off that same day to perform in Dallas.
