Happy #NationalDogDay!
Kate had many wonderful dogs throughout her life worth mentioning but a certain one deserves an individual post - Lobo, the dog she shared with Spencer Tracy. During the semi-retirement she took to care for Spencer, Katharine came home with energetic and faithful Lobo to keep up his spirits.
Although never the same after Spence died, Lobo loved to still ride in the back of the Thunderbird and be anywhere with Kate when she was home, as you can see in these photos from my personal collection!

“You just cannot believe it — here — gone — it is so sad — all the years — all the shared struggles” - KH in a letter to a friend 6 days after ST’s death, 1967.
On this day, Katharine Hepburn was just inches away from the kitchen when she heard Spencer Tracy collapse on the floor and pass away in the early morning of June 10th - Kate put Spence in bed with help from the housekeeper and gardener, “I drew up the covers and lit the candles. He looked so happy to be done with living, which for all his accomplishments had been a frightful burden to him. So quiet. He who had turned and turned in that bed. No one able to help him really. One builds one’s own jail. I never knew him, I think. And he is the only one who ever really knew me—“ KH described in Me: Stories of My Life. 3 AM PST was the mark of the end of their many shared moments.

“I wish I could tell it all — I’ve been everything to him, you know, including nurse, but it wouldn’t be fair.” - KH about ST to Roy Newquist on set of GWCTD (Quoted in Newquist’s own column, The Park Forest Star, December 1971)
Today, June 9th, is the last day #KatharineHepburn unknowingly had with #SpencerTracy.
Roy Newquist wrote a wonderful book (A Special Kind of Magic) containing interviews from on set of GUESS WHOS COMING TO DINNER and was somebody Kate could really confide in; UCLA holds the private tapes of his interviews, which feature audio clips of Tracy & Hepburn behind the scenes!
In a private handwritten letter sent to Newquist in reply to his condolences, KH remarked once again about the 26 years she spent with Tracy, stating: “Someday I suppose I’ll try to do a book – but it would involve others + it is awkward”
Many others received a similar reply when asked about her writing the story of life with Spencer while Louise Tracy was still alive - Thankfully, Katharine DID write a book decades later when she realized nobody would get hurt anymore by what it contained.

RIP #SidneyPoitier - Katharine’s beloved GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER (1967) co-star has passed away at age 94.
“I talked to Sidney Poitier and described the project to him, pretending that Tracy and Hepburn had already agreed. “Are you suggesting that you might want me to play opposite Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn?” “I’m not suggesting it,” I said. “That’s exactly what I want.” “But I couldn’t do it, they’re just too good. Sidney always spoke of how wonderful of a person Katharine Hepburn was and how he did in fact forget his lines during scenes with the three of them, as predicted when approached by director Stanley Kramer.

Katharine Hepburn is photographed here by one of her favorite photographers, Len Tavares, in 1981 - Kate met Len Tavares through her brother Dick when she went to see one of Dick’s plays being performed and became fast friends with him.
“She became enthralled with my son because of his Portuguese heritage,” recalled Mrs. Tavares. “She sat with him for an hour, asking him about ethnic questions.” Kate loved the story about Spencer Tracy learning to do a Portuguese accent for her favorite film of his CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS (1937) which made Mr. Tavares’ heritage an obvious point of fascination for her personally.
