Inktober day 30 - Hawke

Deryn Hawke

Dragon Age 2 and with it, the Champion of Kirkwall. She’s got a bunch of reasons to look so tired. Aaand my gray markers are running out.

If you wanted to appropriately rep our favorite disaster the one and only Hawke, which icon would you use to do so? The Kirkwall Heraldry or Amell Family Crest?

The Kirkwall Party

Greer Hawke (The Chariot), Helgrit Tethras (Temperance)

Brilla Tabris (Seven of Swords), Esme Amell (The Hierophant)

Samir Qun’Istar (The Emperor), and The Game Masters (The Magicians)

A series for @skiing-down-anders-nose of their Dragon Age table-top party. We’ve been putting these together since October last year, I’m so happy we finished the set! It was such a pleasure.

notabloodmage:

I can’t remember if I’ve ever actually posted ABT this but one of my favourite headcanons for Kirkwall is that it has… Just…. The fucking BEST seafood scene in thedas??? Like definitely not HEALTH wise like it’s definitely always 50/50 whether or not u get food poisoning no matter where you eat but I bet it always TASTES amazing.

I’m not talking highbrow cuisine either, like if there’s any restaurants in hightown I feel like they’re probs those REALLY expensive gourmet restaurants that taste like shit. (Tho I do like to headcanon that there’s a nice little bakery by fenris’ mansion that he visits when he’s Stressed BC lord knows that man needs some good Bread in his life)

But below hightown, and specifically at the docks I bet there’s a shit ton of street vendors and little hole in the wall restaurants and around suppertime when they open is probably the best Kirkwall ever smells.

It’s a port city, so they probs have a ton of spices from all across thedas, and they have to be GENEROUS with the seasoning so that whatever’s cooking covers up the stench of darktown/the foundries that permeates the whole city.

anyway tldr free marches fishing industry go brrr

Things I learned:

  • A4 paper was waaaaay too small
  • Should probably use smaller tip pens in future rather than the grey i used here for the interior walls on the Viscount’s Keep, the Chantry, and the Templar Hall.
  • I made up a few chunks in order to make the image coherent, because something must exist in those places but we never see what.
  • You never actually see an on-land exit from Kirkwall to the rest of the Free Marches
  • Darktown must actually be basically the entire city again underneath itself, but we only see a small section of it during game-play.
  • I didn’t include the Black Emporium because it doesn’t seem like that kind of place that ends up on a map. It’s a ‘you have to know where it is already’ kind of place.
  • Not sure how I feel about the roof shading here - it increased the contrast between the streets and the buildings, which is what I wanted it to do, but it also loses the distinctions between individual buildings. In the end I figured that’s less important in a game where Hawke can’t actually go in any old building willy-nilly.
  • the actual in-game maps are also extremely literal - they only show where Hawke can stand. If a wall has a barrel or a stall or a pile of something next to it, the path on the map will go around that stuff.

I definitely enjoyed my first foray into fantasy cartography, though, and learning from this project was useful. :)

Some miscellaneous Dragon Age lore bits sprinkled into Hard in Hightown (the book)

(Specifying the book because there are differences from and more than in the DA:I codex entries)

  • Nevarrans use beetle wings for decorative purposes.
  • Hightown can be divided into three types: The Dwarven palaces in their enclave, the Foreign Quarter subdivided by place of origin, (“where the wealthiest merchants from Orlais and Antiva stay during their twice-yearly visits to criticize the ship captains and shop clerks in their employ”), and the noble mansions of the locals.
  • The noble Hightown neighbourhood is colloquially known as “the Garden.” There are no house numbers, instead metal plaques with family heraldry hang over the lintels of estate doors.
  • Most nobles in Hightown can trace their lineage back to Orlesian conquerors and Tevinter landlords.
  • Kirkwall neighbourhoods are designed following old fault lines and veins in the rock, making it hard to navigate for even people who’ve lived there for a long time. Dwarves however, do not have this problem.
  • The Chantry has someone in the choir tower singing the Chant of Light at all times, “taking her turn at keeping the Chant of Light heard at all times in all the corners of the world.”
  • Apparently there is some kind of pension plan for Kirkwall guardsmen when they retire.
  • This could just be Varric bullshitting his readers–wouldn’t put it past him–but apparently the Kirkwall Guard uses trained nugs on patrol.
