okay okay okay i got a great idea for a dragon age game

so let’s make it about this potentially world ending event right, that draws together a motley crew that the hero needs in order to push it all back. they’d have to be a diverse bunch, complementing each other’s strengths and weaknesses and each bringing something unique to the table.

i think we’d want to make this game heavily about the ancient elves, maybe even including the macguffin being an ancient elven magical device. and we’ll have eluvians too. so because of that, of course we’ll need a powerful elven mage who has a passion and interest in ancient elven history to advise the hero

next up i think we need to finally bring tevinter into the main game. maybe have a branch faction of tevinters who help the big bad. so we’ll really want a character who can give a lot of insight into the tevinter imperium and advise on cultural and social things, you know.

then we’ll need a firm warrior who has a lot of experience leading people, like in an organized, large scale fashion. he or she would be probably a good advisor, rather than companion, to handle the military front of this group.

can’t go without a rogue of some kind, who’s got their ear to the ground and friends all over in low places. they’ll be important to counter the formality of a big professional and official organization that we’re gonna have going on here, break it up with levity and a voice for the everyman.

but we’ll also need the opposite, someone who’s really in there with the chantry, a believer and someone who can be the voice of the old world order while there’s big things afoot in a changing landscape. they’ll be important.

we’ll need a warden too, it’s a dragon age game afterall and it’ll be really important to the plot at some point to HAVE AN ACTUAL WARDEN IN THE PARTY.

okay, this all sounds good. we just wrapped up dragon age II, so i’m guessing that for the 

elf you want merrill, since she’s a wicked strong mage who has a ton of interest and fascination with ancient elven culture. and she’s got experience with eluvians, she’s heavily into the mythology and the evanuris - it just makes sense right

for the tevinter, it makes sense to use fenris again, since he knows both sides of the imperium, noble and underclass, given his life experience.

the warrior would be aveline, right, since she ended up captain of the entire kirkwall guard and showed extensive experience with leading a broad range of people from different backgrounds. she would be the obvious choice to lead the military branch of this organization.

and the rogue, well, isabela, right? she’s been a dragon age staple since origins and she’s got more contacts than there are villages in Ferelden. plus she’s the perfect foil to stuffy nobility types.

for the chantry, wouldn’t it make sense to use sebastian again? devout man of the faith, an exiled prince, brings a whole dynamic to the table.

and for warden, well, choice is obvious right? bethany or carver, it just writes itself.

because of COURSE the hero of this game is going to be Hawke, i mean, we just wrote an entire game where the whole frame story is the Chantry trying to find them for incredible purpose, while Hawke took up the reins and was a pivotal figure in the brewing mage/templar conflict. oh whats that, the Big Bad of this game is going to be Corypheus, that darkspawn magister who has a whole ass history with the Hawke family and Hawke themselves was directly responsible for releasing again? not to mention how hawke is a fully fleshed out character with motivations, growth, loss and a deep and intimate connection to a whole cast of characters perfect to continue with?

what do you mean it’s going to be some absofuckinglute nobody that we aren’t even going to have the decency of writing an origins prologue ala our best received game? and wait, they can be a fucking kossith? i thought you said this was an extremely religious chantry organization? it is? but the hero can be a kossith? and that’s not really ever going to matter?

and we’re just going to invent a whole new cast of characters? and throw out everyone from DA2 like a used paper towel? and Hawke will show up severely nerfed and kind of just mill around for a few missions before being trotted off stage through either an off-screen death or just because Hawke had better things to do than help save the world?

wait, but we’re still going to have fucking varric around? even though all of his friends got thrown in the trash? you mean all the people that he grew close to and contributed to what made his character so deep and beloved?

that’s what we’re going to do?

wait, the warden in the party ISN’T EVEN GOING TO BE A FUCKING WARDEN?

hold on, what do you mean we’re also going to systematically explain everything and strip out every last bit of nuance, mystery and intrigue from the entire setting?

One day, when Orzammar is gone for good, they’ll find out differently. Those darkspawn won’t have anywhere else to go but up, and they’ll do it.

The surface folk will have themselves a Blight that will never end.

The Memories tell us that our kingdom once reached far beneath the mountains, and that the thaigs were almost beyond counting. Kal-Sharok was the capital then, home to all the noble houses, and Orzammar was simply the home of the Miner and Smith castes.

It was with the Tevinter Imperium that things changed. Paragon Garal moved the seat of power to Orzammar to more closely oversee the trade that began with the surface. It seemed that our people were entering a new age of prosperity.

The Memories hold no explanations for the coming of the darkspawn, only questions. At first, they were rumors, noises in the Deep Roads, a lost traveler here and there. The Warrior Caste sent men to patrol the road, and thought the matter settled. We did not know that while we searched for them, they were engaged in a search of their own.

Sleeping deep in the Stone itself was the archdemon. They found him, and awakened him, and the Blight began.
