The Kitchen House
By Kathleen Grissom

I didn’t want to read The Kitchen House.  I loathed the idea of spending any time in a fictionalized world built around slavery and southern plantation living. But reader after reader praised the novel, so I downloaded the “preview” before splurging the $1.99 on a title I was determined not to like.

By the time I tore through the first few chapters, the limited time sale was over and the book was $11.99. I didn’t care. I bought it immediately so I wouldn’t have to stop.

The Kitchen House follows the story of Lavinia, an Irish immigrant suppressing a terrible past at the tender age of 7. Purchased by a Virginian plantation owner, she works and lives in the Kitchen House, the slave quarters that serves the “Big House.” With a name like Lavinia, I was concerned for her well-being from the get-go. (See Titus Andronicus; Season 2 of Downton Abbey).  But Lavinia turns out to be plucky, curious and extremely loving.

Lavinia has a unique perspective as both an indentured servant to the Big House and as a white girl in the south.  While the Kitchen House inhabitants become her family, the Big House tenants also have their eyes on her.  And though she crosses many of the divides established as a result of slavery over her lifetime, in a way, she is the most isolated of all the characters. She doesn’t truly belong anywhere.

What’s interesting in my reluctance to read the book is that it directly mirrors Grissom’s reluctance to write it. While restoring a plantation tavern in Virginia, she happened upon a location in the plans called “Negro Hill.” It haunted her so much that one day journaling, a fictional story about its legacy poured onto her paper. Even Grissom herself was disturbed by the tale, but it, like the book’s heroine, was stubborn, and would not be altered.

The Kitchen House has heart smeared across every page. It’s laden with tears and tragedy, buoyed by stubborn determination and an inextinguishable need to survive. It hurts right below the sternum, like a punch to the gut that allows you to take bigger, fresher breaths.

The reluctant reader of a reluctant writer, it strikes me that perhaps the stories we avoid writing are the ones that most need to be written; and the stories we avoid reading may be the very ones we need to read the most.

When the Moon Fancast:Alexandra Cherkashina as Lavinia

I’ve watched the Games all my life, seen gorgeous tributes from every corner of Panem, and every last one of them would pale in comparison to this woman. My first thought is that she doesn’t need to speak. Her beauty is eloquent enough to win all the friends and lovers she could ever want.

~ When the Moon Fell in Love with the Sun, Ch 6

Couldn’t resist sneaking this one into the fancast lineup too. :) Obviously WtM isn’t canon, but this could also be how Lavinia might’ve looked had she and her boyfriend successfully escaped the Capitol for a sweeter, simpler life. ♡

“-oh! I know you!”

I can’t place a name or time to the girl’s face. But I’m certain of it. The dark red hair, the striking features, the porcelain white skin. But even as I utter the words, I feel my insides contracting with anxiety and guilt at the sight of her, and while I can’t pull it up, I know some bad memory is associated with her.

~ Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games, Ch 6

I want her to stay until I fall asleep. To be there when I wake up. I want the protection of this girl, even though she never had mine.

Finally time to reblog my girl! ♥♥♥

Rupert refuses to admit to himself how hurt he was about everything (like, oh gee, losing everyone he’d ever loved and also *WATCHING* Amir die).

So he’s trying to power through his trauma by denying that he has a problem and on days where he can’t ignore it, deciding that everyone else has bigger problems so he’s not allowed to grieve until he’s helped everyone else.

(Side note: trauma isn’t a competition.  Your trauma and your feelings aren’t less important just because you believe someone is worse off)

Everyone notices but generally writes it off as him being tired due to recent events.  Amir, Wence, and Chamberlain worry but they can’t get through to him.

Lavinia is the one who finally does.  She tells him that she thinks he’s overdue for a breakdown, and Rupert goes off about how he cannot fall apart when he has a kingdom to run, a family to take care of, and everything else to look after.  (His voice is progressively getting worse and cracking more.)

Lavinia says something like “Oh but Rupert, I break down at least twice a week and my kingdom is doing fine!”

And then Rupert just bursts into tears.  Lavinia holds him as he cries (and thinks about how tall he’s gotten and how she can’t even remember the last time she held him like this).  He eventually tells her everything about losing everything and how scared he is to trust the wrong people again and how scared he is to lose the people he loves again, and he *can’t* let his guard down because people need him.  He also tells her about feeling so ashamed for leaving Wenceslaus alone, how useless he felt as he watched Chamberlain die, how helpess and terrified and *torn apart* he was to watch Amir get eaten, and that in that moment all he wanted to do was hold Amir close and tell him he loved him before it was too late but he *couldn’t* because he was tied up in the stables. (And then he has to explain why he was tied up in the stables.)

Cut to Lavinia storming into the drawing room where Amir is talking to Chamberlain and Atossa, taking off her shoe, and *launching* it at Amir, yelling, “You son of a !!!”
