asheathes:

And then Richard Parker, my fierce companion, the terrible one who kept me alive, disappeared forever from my life. After a few hours, a member of my own species found me. He left and returned with a group who carried me away. I wept like a child, not because I was overwhelmed at having survived, although I was. I was weeping because Richard Parker left me so unceremoniously. It broke my heart.

The film adaptation of Yann Martel’s 2001 book Life Of Pi has received an astonishing eleven Academy Award nominations ahead of next month’s ceremony but is it any good?

Directed by Ang Lee, the film is extremely faithful to the acclaimed book and brings the curious tale to life gloriously. As expected, the cinematography is delightful throughout and is shot beautifully and artistically.

The story follows a 16-year-old Indian boy whose family are emigrating to Canada when the freighter ship on which they are travelling sinks. The animals from Pi’s father’s zoo provide interesting companions on the lifeboat. A rat, hyena, orangutan, zebra and Bengal tiger create an interesting proposition.

The only actor with serious screen time is Surah Sharma who plays Pi on the boat, turning in a decent performance. Many of the other performance are too entrenched with sentimentality and come across as quite slight.

While Life Of Pi is a solid show, it falls short of being a truly great movie. Much like the book itself, it lacks in suspense but the plot is enchanting enough to justify checking it out.

Life Of Pi has been adapted into a successful film and is in contention for success at next month’s Oscars. For that reason, I decided to have a read at the book before seeing the movie.

It was originally published in 2001 and follows the story of a 16-year-old Indian boy who survives over seven months after a shipwreck. Written by French-Canadian author Yann Martel, much of the book concerns spirituality and religion.

Spending 227 days on a boat with a Bengal tiger may seem ludicrous but the book is symbolic of hope and belief. The main character Piscine Molitor Patel, known as Pi, is an interesting person whose desires are aroused by the animals in his father’s zoo and his love of acquiring religions. He is mature enough to see the benefits in various faiths including Christianity, Islam and Hinduism.

This book has been highly acclaimed but it lacks in suspense. It is an easy and enjoyable read but it fails to truly stir the senses. Now for the film.

So, the “worst book you had to read for school” thread makes me sad, since there’s so many books I love in the list.

So, do people want to play with me and say their favorite book they had to read for school?

I suppose in the end, the whole of life becomes an act of letting go, but what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye.
