The Wedding Banquet (1993) was co-written and directed by Ang Lee. His three entries on the 2019 edition of the TSPDT list of the 1,000 Greatest Films are Brokeback Mountain (ranking number 391), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (411) and The Ice Storm (972). His two entries on the New York Times list of the 1,000 Best Films are Eat Drink Man Woman and Sense and Sensibility. His two entries among my best 1,001 movies are Eat Drink Man Woman and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
The Wedding Banquet (1993) is number 720 on Halliwell’s Top 1000.
Editor John Walker gave the film three stars and wrote “A delightful comedy of culture clashes, racial and generational differences and the problems of living up to your parents’ expectations; it makes light of situations without concealing their truth and occasional pain.”

The Wedding Banquet premiered Feb 1993 in Berlin, Mar 5 in Taiwan, and Aug 4 in the USA. After re-watching it, it is a strong honorable mention, and perhaps an entry among my best 1,001.
For cinemagoers we’ve been inundated of late with films that are adaptations, remakes or film franchises. So it’s unusual for us to finally have one that’s an original concept, which inadvertently puts a lot of pressure on it to be worth the time and money to see. Hulk has several scenes where changes in a character’s blood are depicted artistically, most of which have some form of strobe effect. Multiple scenes show bright muzzle flashes from machine guns. A late scene with electrical equipment being misused has extreme strobe effects. This is followed by bright lightning and electrical effects throughout an action sequence.
The camera shakes very briefly during some scenes. There is brief flying and high-speed chasing, with one sequence involving a long fall from extreme heights.
Flashing Lights: 9/10. Motion Sickness: 3/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: Several animals suffer violent deaths in this film, including one in a testing lab. There are flashbacks to domestic violence.

I still remember the first time I saw this film. I remember I haven’t seen the trailer or any idea about the movie. A good friend just recommended this to me and so I went to the nearest cinema and watch this.
The whole film is a moving art in all forms, shapes and sizes. It’s beautiful. It hasn’t sunk in yet to me at the time that I am experiencing a masterpiece before my eyes. The whole experience as the story progresses was so heavy and sad. The unspoken words, the longing, the betrayal, the fear, the stigma, the love.
I feel sorry for Alma (Michelle Williams). Though it was short, her performance left a mark on the film. Very well acted. Kudos too to Anne Hathaway. From Princess Diaries movies to flashing her boobs on this film was just a smooth yet daring transition to me at the time. Jake Gyllenhaal was amazing. Very relatable character. Great performance and I mean really great.
But this film belongs to Heath Ledger. His take on Ennis del Mar was something I haven’t seen for an actor for a very long time. His facial gestures, mannerisms, the way he mumbled his words when he speaks. I felt his pain and his baggage all throughout the movie. His performance was perfection. He isn’t Heath. He was Ennis del Mar.
The final minute of the movie on his trailer alone was already building up all my emotions. When he opened his closet to reveal his and Jack’s shirt along with The Brokeback mountain photo above and Ennis’ teary eyes just had me bawling like a child in the cinema. I have never felt something so gut wrenching like that. Ennis’ eyes speaks so much love yet so much regret and sadness. The amazing Gustavo Santaolalla’s guitar strings made it even more heartbreaking. I remember I didn’t left the theater right away as the credits are still rolling. From coming in to the theater excitedly to enjoy a movie to coming out of the theater with baggy eyes and felt like depressed your whole life in just a span of 2 hours lol.
I cried not only for Jack and Ennis’ love story. I cried for myself. The emotions on this films reflects of my own emotions in the world. Some may be happy, some are regrets.
I will never ever forget this film. After all these years, this scene never fails to make me not just cry but feel so deeply with gut-punching sadness.
Thank you Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and most especially to Ang Lee for this masterpiece.
