I was in Greenwich at the weekend having a goose at the vintage markets, two little comedy value gems above. I really wanted the Levi’s denim suit jacket, for all the formal events i go to ha, but in my current finical position i was priced out the game. i’m big on the lives tab though, regret not buying them, hocked all my money on a great pair of Levi’s Big E selvedge, a total bargain at £20, cant go wrong, i’ll post up a pic of them tonight.

February 26th is…

Levi Strauss Day - They’re comfy. They last for years and years. They don’t require dry-cleaning or any other kind of special treatment. They’re perfect for a number of occasions, from a trip to the grocery store, to a walk in the park, to an evening at the pub, to a number of even semi-formal social occasions. They’re incredibly versatile, meaning they look good with pretty much everything, from t-shirts to smart blazers. In fact, you can’t imagine life without them at all. What are we talking about? Jeans, of course! This iconic garment is more than deserving of it own holiday, as is Mr. Levi Strauss, a man without whom jeans as we know them might not exist at all.

Personal Chef Day -  If you’re lucky enough to have a personal chef in your life, treat him extra nicely. For others, maybe there’s someone out there whom you take for granted on the food front and deserves some pampering.

Pistachio Day - Pistachios arrived in the United States sometime in the 1880s, but they have been cultivated in the Middle East since Biblical times. The pistachio tree grows to about 20 feet tall needing little or no rain and must have high heat. Amazingly, in Iran, they claim to have 700-year-old pistachio trees! A new tree takes between 7 and 10 years to mature and bear fruit.

Set A Good Example Day - When we observe kindness in others, we are often inspired to offer kindness ourselves. Someone set a good example for us to follow, and we must continue those good examples for others in our lives. Everyone influences others. The influence could be positive or negative. Even from a young age, we experience good and bad behavior. Parents can positively influence their children at an early age. Additionally, many others, such as our extended families, educators, mentors, community leaders, and even organizations, can positively influence us in many ways.

Tell A Fairy Tale Day -  The origins of most fairy tales would fail today’s standards of the Association of Fairy Tales. They told unseemly tales and would be rated as inappropriate for children. Most traveling storytellers told fairy tales with dramatic detail to make children behave, teach a lesson or pass the time much like ghost stories around a campfire today.

The Levi’s “Giger Train” Commercial

In2003Levi Strauss & Co. aired a commercial featuring a train designed by H.R. Giger

The TV Spot, directed by Johan Renck, features American model Brandon Merrill, wearing Levi’s jeans, riding a black stallion along railroad tracks across a desert landscape. An oncoming train approaches, which she rides full speed towards. She then hitches her jeans to her saddle, and at the moment before she and the train collide, leaps across the full length of the train, landing safely on the other side.

The ad ran internationally on MTV and VH1 as well as in movie theaters.

Featured song: No Pain No Gain by Unkle ft Keith Flint

H.R. Giger’s concept design sketches for the train, the saddle, and the opening of the train tunnel:

Giger’s train was brought to life by visual effects company The Mill, and designed by Ben Smith.

Digital Model:

In 2004 H.R. Giger and his agent Leslie Barany commissioned UK based company Scales & Models to create a physical model of the train, to be exhibited for his show “H.R. Giger’s Retrospective” at the gallery Halle Saint-Pierre, Paris, France.

Photos of the scale model and H.R. Giger admiring it at the gallery exhibition:

Sadly, the commercial would only be shown in the USA for a few short weeks after airing in July of 2003. It was pulled from broadcast in August after complaints from train safety lobby Operation Lifesaver. The president of Operation Lifesaver, Gerri Hall, wrote a letter to Levi’s chairman Bob Haas, requesting the ad be pulled, stating; “[the ad] trivializes the dangerous, illegal and all-too-often tragic activity of playing on railroad tracks.”

[Special acknowledgment to stunt rider Nicole Rose for jumping over that train]
