A young male Tule Elk makes his way to a pond where mallards dabble and float about. Nearby, other males sit and graze on grass as well as practice their sparring moves for the coming mating season.

Titchwell Marsh..Located on the north coast of Norfolk, between the villages of Titchwell and Thornham, Titchwell Marsh is blessed with diverse habitats that include reedbeds, saltmarsh and freshwater lagoons where avocets, bearded tits and marsh harriers nest. There’s also a wide sandy beach here, which offers extensive views across The Wash.

The ducklings stay in the nest for at least 10 hours while they dry and get used to using their legs. Then, usually in the early morning, the female leads them to water. Bad weather may delay this exodus, but the sooner the ducklings get to water to feed, the better their chances of survival. They cannot survive without their mother, and take 50-60 days before they fledge and become independent.

Väntar ut kylan, akvarell, 23x17 cm
Klarälven flyter förbi alldeles utanför mitt jobb. Även när älven fryser så är det nästan alltid öppet vatten på ena sidan. Genom hela vintern samlas det hundratals gräsänder vid iskanten.

The Klarälven river runs right past where I work. Even when the river freezes, there’s almost always open water on one side. Throughout winter hundreds of mallards gather on the edge of the ice.

Met those guys at a very strange place…..They might be friends to @adventuresofalgy!
Algy is very grateful to his friend Anders @amanwithvanishingideas for drawing his attention to this disoriented pair of ducks. He fears that his feathered friends have got lost in a concrete jungle; he sends them (and Anders) lots of fluffy hugs and invites them to join him on the wild west coast of the Scottish Highlands. It may be rather wet and windy, but ducks do seem to thrive here
