Rihaku and Basen trying to keep Maomao out of trouble
Maomao: *she’s a runner ♀️ She’s a track star ⭐️*
*After the Emperor agrees with keeping the cat*
Gyokuyou: gasp! You know what would be so fucking funny-
Emperor: Oh, absolutely I do.
Chapter 43
For everyone reading about the kitty being named Maomao! This is really interesting and explains how they differentiated between their names in the original, untranslated script!
Chapter 40
Take a shot every time these two acts like dumbasses towards each other. That is unless you can’t hold your liquor like Rakan. Then you’ll probably die from alcohol poisoning just a few pages in.
Happy Valentines Day!
Hope you all have a wonderful day and that maybe some Maomao/Jinshi content may contribute to that, pffft.
!!!Cat Mother vs Fox Father!!!
[from chapter 36.4 in the manga]
Strange Tastes
[Just a short fic I wrote for the holidays which I hope you will enjoy! In which Jinshi really has to stop adapting traditions from the western merchants, For Maomao’s sake. This and more can be found on my AO3: Unphysicalling]
!!! Spoiler for those who are only reading the manga or haven’t read far into the Web Novel!!!
The pitter-patter of steps rang down the corridor. It was a high speed chase but Maomao knew the layout better than the assailant. By that logic, she snatched them up from the ground.
“Caught you!” A rare, triumphant smile settled on her lips. She was rather happy she didn’t have to chase it outside, where a layer of snow had gathered on the palace grounds. The thief mewled lowly as she stroked it in her arms. She carefully picked out the herbs from the cat’s mouth, which it had stolen from the drying-ladder in her room.
She was just about to release the stray when new steps thundered toward her. She knew who it was, how should she put it, she recognised their cadence.
“Good morning~!” That honeyed tone came from behind her. She reluctantly turned to face the Prince.
“Ah Jinshi-sama, Good Morning…” She stiffened a bit at his expression. Shining eyes, chin turned up and eyebrows high, such a smug look surely meant trouble for her.
“Say, I met with a merchant-head this morning and we spoke about holiday traditions and what not. Turns out, the westerners has this wonderful thing to spruce up the winter months…” She felt like he wasn’t getting to the point quick enough, the cat still stirring slightly in her arms as she cautiously listened.
“It’s said if you meet someone under a mistletoe-branch it’s an obligation that you, well-” his slight blush put her on edge, yet that smug expression stayed as he stepped closer to her. She backed accordingly further into the corridor. He stopped suddenly and the sleaziest of grins bloomed on the celestial maiden’s lips as he ended the sentence.
“- Kiss.” A pale finger was pointed upward and she understood the trap she had stepped in. In the closed off doorway above them, as though he had planned this encounter (which he most likely had) hung a branch of light green with white berries, tied with red string. So simple, yet here she was cornered under it by a man with strange taste.
“A-Ah… Well that’s quite an unsanitary practice, not to mention highly inappropriate.” She needed to keep her head cool, any sign of weakness and he would surely pounce. She knew the man’s core to be in truth very soft, yet that dominating aura of ambition couldn’t be denied either… Truly, his unpredictability made her nervous.
“Hm? I think of it as rather charming. And what is the harm if both parties are healthy and on good terms.” His smile was persistent. It gave her chills in a way, good or bad she couldn’t really place. Thrilling in more ways than one. She wouldn’t comply though, she still had work to do.
“Jinshi-sama should know what such actions could lead to. Should the occurrence only be so much as rumoured, one party might fall under the jealous hate of the public..” She stared right back, watching for any sign of reluctance. Sadly, he wore his mask tight that day.
“If it’s isolated and built specifically to keep out eavesdroppers and spies, wouldn’t it be safe?” This office building of his, of course, had been constructed just so. Her exits were getting fewer the more they bickered.
“If it’s the matter of will.. Then-“
“- Then I’ll ask for forgiveness later. By the way, did I tell you what the merchant brought with him in his cargo? It was all quite interesting, though I believe you’d find it more so…” He was leaning closer, hands resting on the door behind her, hair spilling forward over his shoulders. Impatience and desperation really reeked from his impending movements. She knew her time was nigh.
Let’s use another tactic then. Glancing meekly to the side, she softly placed her fingertips against his chest in a gesture to wait. Channeling her sisters’ false coyness, she lowered her voice to barely above a whisper.
“Then, Jinshi-sama needs to close his eyes…” She watched from the corner of her eye how the man bashfully blushed, fumbled a bit then let his eyelids slowly drop.
Jinshi’s heart felt like it was running away, skipping at the close proximity to her, in wait for the impact. Something soft soon planted itself on his lips, incredibly soft, so small and- fuzzy?
Something tickled his cheek, and the cold dampness pushing against his nose didn’t feel right either. His eyes shot open, meeting the slit pupils of a cat, soon realising what he was kissing. It finally got its paw up, pushing against his face as he stepped back.
An amused Maomao adjusted the cat in her arms again. This time, the smug grin had transferred to her own lips.
“You really do have strange tastes, Jinshi-sama.”
A defeated sigh escaped from his lungs, a hard blow to his ego but he was used to her rejections by now. He turned around to begin his solemn trekk back to the office, when something warm and plush caressed his cheek.
A scent of potent ointments invades his senses for just a moment.
He turned back in shock to see Maomao scurrying off in the other direction. His face felt like it was set on fire.
I’m back at it again.

With the end of Volume 9 of the Web Novel and the announcement of the Light Novels translation being Licenced, the one who has been translating the web novel, dear author AuriCa has informed the community that she will not be picking up the translating for the next arc!
She urges us to look to the now licenced translation(which will be linked below) as well. I hope she knows that her work has been greatly appreciated, beyond what I could describe with words. This translation of the web novel has truly kept me afloat and is the one I’ve been reading from the very beginning.
Of course I’ll update you all with appropriate memes befitting the official translation of the light novel as well. And though there are no news of it yet, who knows if someone in the fandom picks up where AuriCa left of and continues to translate the raws of the web novel.
All the love to AuriCa, whom I will be forever grateful for having translated so many volumes, chapters and even parts of the Light Novel for us. I wish her luck on future conquests!
Here is the licenced translation of the Light Novel, which means the arcs, plot points and names of characters may be different from both the Web Novel and the Manga. It also seems that this translation requires a membership of some kind, which I may update further on, as this does seem to involve a paywall.

Thank you for reading, and for those who have not read the Web Novel translated by AuriCa, I’ll be linking it here as well!
