Probiotics And Prebiotics: Your Body’s “Dynamic Duo”

Probiotics And Prebiotics: Your Body’s “Dynamic Duo”

By: Dr. Ken Redcross

The gut, or your microbiome, does not just play a role in digesting your dinner. It serves as a second brain to the body and is responsible for clearing toxins while protecting against bad bacteria and viruses that could cause infection. Without a healthy gut our immune system is compromised. In fact, 70% of your immune system lives in your microbiome.

When the microbiome…

I can’t believe I have to say this but if your hedgehog is having (urgent) health issues, CONTACT A VET. Do not send people on the internet demanding messages and expect them to do the work for you. As much as I’d love to be able to help everyone, I am 1) not a vet, 2) don’t have magical healing abilities that can both diagnose and treat your pet through a computer screen and 3) do this for free which means I don’t owe you anything and have a life besides social media so I might not be able to respond as fast as your pet would need.

I am well aware that hedgehogs are relatively unknown exotic animals and a lot of vets know very little about them which is why I’m always happy to brainstorm or answer additional questions. However, I (or anyone else on the internet for that matter) am nota substitute for veterinary advice. I can’t and won’t diagnose your pet for you. Of course it’s fine to gather extra information and opinions but please schedule an appointment with your vet first before turning to the internet.

Since I don’t log in on this website as often anymore (maybe 2-3 times a month; if I upload here it’s usually scheduled/queued posts) and since tumblr doesn’t give me notifications half of the time, it can take me a while to respond as I don’t always notice when I get messages. Today I logged in and discovered I had several messages sitting in my inbox for who knows how long while I only got a notification today for one of them. Several of these messages are anonymous questions about medical conditions and to all of them, my response would be: go to a vet.

It’s not that I don’t want to help, I just can’t. Even if I can guess what’s going on you still need a vet in order to diagnose and treat your hedgehog.

So from now on I am not going to respond to anonymous medical questions about specific situations anymore. I will still be responding to the more general questions but if it is something very specific and urgent and the message does not include anything about an earlier or scheduled vet visit, it will be deleted. Most of the time for me to be of any help at all an anonymous message is pretty useless anyway - it contains (too) little information and doesn’t give me the option to reach out to you and discuss the situation.

If you want to reach me the fastest way would be through Instagram or Facebook where I’m more active and which actually gives me notifications. But please, and I cannot stress this enough, always reach out to your vet first (even if it’s just a call) when you think your hedgehog is having health issues!
