Recipe #115 - Pizza Bread

For full effect, listen to the Luca soundtrack.

Just in case you have no idea what this recipe has to do with Midnight in Salem, here is an image I received from Her to help me identify the food items on sale at Lauren’s shop:

This was so fun to assemble! It really felt like I was making art because I painted the sauce on with a brush and arranged the toppings to fit the aesthetic I was going for. I added the fresh basil after the bread came out of the oven so it would keep its bright green color and make everything really pop. I could’ve gone for a normal pizza, but I just can’t say no to fresh mozzarella so I went Margherita.

My two complaints about the results I got were the lack of sauce and the thickness of the bread. I think if I made this again I would spoon the sauce onto the bread instead of painting it on, the sauce layer was just too thin. The bread (ciabatta) was fine once I got it in my mouth, but it was very challenging to cut, even with a heavy duty steak knife.

The pizza sauce recipe I followed was very good, but it felt less “from scratch” than I had hoped. The majority of the sauce came from a big can of crushed tomatoes, so it didn’t feel too different from just buying a can of sauce. Oh well, I tried.

Recipe for pizza bread:

Here is my source

-1 loaf of bread (I went with ciabatta because it has a wide surface area to work with)

-¼ cup olive oil

-1 ¾ cups shredded mozzarella (I went with fresh mozzarella)

-¼ cup finely shredded parmesan cheese

-Desired toppings

Recipe for pizza sauce:

Here is my source

-1 ½ tbsp olive oil

-2 tsp minced garlic

-3 tbsp tomato paste

-1 (15 oz) can of crushed tomatoes (I used a 12 oz can and was fine)

-2 tbsp chopped, fresh basil

-1 ½ tsp oregano

-Salt and pepper

Excited to be getting into some more MID recipes. Not my favorite Nancy Drew game, but it brought me a bunch of new cooking/baking opportunities and for that I’m grateful. Until next time, keep on cookin’!

Recipe 115 - Pizza Bread

“Pizza Bread” is the first recipe I’ve made based on the offerings at Lauren’s shop in Midnight in Salem. I’ve only made one other recipe for MID which you can find here.

To be honest, I’m not 100% sure what “pizza bread” is, so I just found a recipe for French bread pizza and called it a day. Hopefully that’s what Her was going for. This recipe is super simple so I added some self-imposed challenges to make things interesting. First, I went to a specialty Italian market (Eataly) so that I could get the most authentic ingredients possible. Second, I made the pizza sauce from scratch. In other words, I made a fun Saturday out of it! In the end I think my efforts were worth it because this was delicious and gorgeous to look at. A treat for the eyes and the stomach :)

I don’t think I need to go into crazy detail about the experience of eating pizza bread. If you’ve had pizza, it’s not much different, just thicker. This would be a great recipe for beginners, kids or guests at a party to make together. It’s extremely customizable and all of the ingredients are easy to find.

Recipe #110 - Johnny Cakes

Disclaimer: I actually like my pancakes crispy, but these were the wrong kind of crispy. I now have a greater appreciation for the role eggs play in softening pancakes up.

These were surprisingly tricky to make. The dough has a mashed potato texture and you’re meant to cook it in little blobs prior to flattening them out. They take a very long time to brown and it’s easy to get impatient. I got fed up toward my second batch and ended up with some duds I had to toss. You definitely wouldn’t be able to make pancake art with these like Nancy does in the game.

Texture-wise these taste similar to latkes with a pretty bland flavor that calls for plenty of butter and maple syrup. A fun experiment if you want to pretend it’s the early 1700s, but not something I’d serve to guests.

Recipe:

Here is my source

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 3 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 ½ cups water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • butter, oil, or bacon grease for frying (I used vegetable oil)

I don’t know what I was thinking, but I somehow lost all of my MID screenshots from my one and only playthrough. As a result, I will be doing a fresh playthrough in October to take pics and jog my memory. Also, I just want those Halloween vibes ;) Keep on cookin’ Clue Crew!

Recipe 110 - Johnny Cakes

“Johnny Cakes” is the first recipe I’ve made based on the Johnny Cakes minigame in Midnight in Salem. It’s also my first MID recipe in general, so exciting!

Johnny cakes (or Johhnycakes) are associated with New England and Native American culture and are basically old timey pancakes made of cornmeal. As a pancake fan I was very excited to give them a shot. Rather than using the game’s recipe I opted to make a traditional version with very few ingredients. The result was…crunchy.

Yeah, not my most successful creation unfortunately. The flavor wasn’t too far off from a normal pancake but I wasn’t a fan of the texture of these. I hope to tackle the fancier, modern version of Johnny cakes in the near future, so stay tuned.

Nancy Drew Posthumous Characters||Midnight in Salem

Abigail Hathorne
Before you stands Abigail Hathorne, helping the accused witches escape the grasp of her own brother, Judge Hathorne himself. Abigail freed many from their holding cells, until the Judge caught her in the act and locked up in a cell deep within the Hathorne House. The statue was given the name Little Liberty in honor of her valiant efforts to free the innocent.

Frances Tuttle
More recently, Frances Tuttle, Judge Hathorne’s last direct descendant, lived in a small section of the house while the rest was left to fall into considerable disrepair. She was alone except for a part-time caregiver, Lauren Holt, who had a bedroom in the carriage house. A few months ago, Frances Tuttle passed away, while left Hathorne House without a legal heir. According to the historical statutes of Salem, after ninety days the house reverts to public property. The deadline, of which, is two days from now, at midnight.

I think the saddest thing about MID not coming out is how it affects the community as a whole. Like, yeah people are still able to talk about the old games and we can share thoughts on those but we don’t have anything to collectively look forward to. It’s kind of ruining the community aspect and I hate it. Just give us our damn game already.

Bringing back this post with completely different vibes of HOPE and HIGH EXPECTATIONS because of THIS!!!Nancy’s back babyyyyy

While I am well aware of the sheer number of memes made about this cover, all of the games will be posted on this blog in the name of completionism.

The box art for Midnight in Salem.

If you would like to print out all the games for a shelf display, the link for that is here.

Featured artist: I believe this cover was NOT made by Mark Tolleshaug, unlike the previous 32 (although feel free to correct me if I am wrong).

The vintage classic game version was edited by Calina Herman/Little Jackalope in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Nancy Drew games in 2018.

okay let’s get right into this. LET’S CHAT. i just finished the game and i’m itching to talk about it.

(i’ll try to keep spoilers to a minimum.)

PROS

  • the vibe this game gives is shockingly nice. much fall. very autumn. it’s very much what i want from a game that focuses on witches in salem during halloween.
  • frank and joe’s presence (SPOOK SQUAD), which honestly felt like a purposeful strategic move to tie something familiar (same with deirdre tbh) into a game that changed so much from its predecessors.
  • still, i genuinely loved those convos in which they petition nancy to join their detective agency. WHY nancy was so reluctant, NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW
  • that moment when ned called at the beginning and it blatantly sounded like he was cheating on nancy. honestly after all those unceremoniously cancelled dates he deserves this
  • having so many characters! this game made the one-suspect horror of ransom of the seven ships feel like a far-off nightmare.
  • that bangin’ song that kept playing? midnight city by m83 vibes anybody?
  • and of course the gem in the crown: motherfucking DEIRDRE (is anybody even remotely surprised to hear me say this). DEIRDRE!!!! deirdre. what a gal. she felt very much like herself. sassy bitchy smart bossy INCREDIBLE. the GOAT. also, the deirdre/nancy was like someone peered into my soul and gave me exactly what i wanted from those two. name a more iconic duo. crime-fighting partners for life, i take no other options.

meanwhile! CONS

  • this game’s graphics were great! ………….back in 2005. who called, and want their cgi back. the worst offense of this is arguably the UNNATURALLY TWITCHY PEOPLE.
  • (double the trouble for all those times when someone continues moving long after they’re done speaking. WHO APPROVED THIS)
  • i feel like joe and deirdre were especially bad in this regard. there were times when deirdre looked like a badly handled marionette puppet. and joe looked like he constantly needed to go to the bathroom. so. much. shifting.
  • (the only exception to these horrific graphics were the nature shots, which were decent. it felt almost like the entire focus was on that. and just that.)
  • (also, why was everything in the background always so BLURRY. why.)
  • (has anybody out there played sherlock holmes nemesis? cause the graphics feel pretty much perfectly on par with that game and it came out IN 2007. 2007, PEOPLE)
  • WHY WAS NED’S SIDE OF THAT PHONE CONVO AT THE END COMPLETELY SILENT
  • there were moments in this storyline that felt so unbearably soap-opera. the moment [REDACTED’S] criminal record is published in the paper (brenda carlton moved to salem, i guess???), and [REDACTED] starts taking blame for the fire, and [REDACTED] starts yelling at [REDACTED] about starting the fire, and then [REDACTED] starts taking blame for the other fire, everything sort of fell apart for me.
  • (arson really runs in that family, huh)
  • although was anything as bad as the ending when nancy confronts the bad guy and it just goes on and on and on? and bad guy even admits to all this in front of a judge of the law (even if said judge’s spirit is well and truly crushed and has been the entire game)? and nancy also takes this opportunity to lecture any adult in sight like she’s some kind of paragon of True Justice?
  • okay. can’t avoid this one. nancy’s voice. fuck, i couldn’t get past it. it was so emotionless. it was so not nancy. i really went into this with a somewhat open mind but no. (anybody been subjecting themselves to the christmas prince netflix movies? cause nancy sounds exactly like the protag. minus some emotion.)
  • ALSO, DID THAT TRUTH SERUM EVER PLAY A ROLE. DID I MISS SOMETHING. (it’s also fucking hilarious that nancy won’t believe in ghosts but will put a modicum of trust into a  t r u t h  s e r u m)
image

is this ao3 comment really going to make me play MID. is it. IS IT. am i being shamelessly baited or IS THERE SOMETHING TO THIS.

Still trying to figure out how to do backgrounds, and emotions as well. I wanted her to look kinda sneaky looking but nope it ended up like this. Also Deirdre always looked mixed to me for some reason (white/asian) so I portrayed that in this also.

Also that cup and straw gave me a lot more trouble than I thought.
