@deathnotetober day 9! prompt: “reaper”

Heres the thing about Light Yagami that some of y'all don’t get:

The whole, entire God shtick… That was a self defense mechanism.

Far before he came to his decision to start going all God of the New World murder bitch on everyone, his first two kills were practically accidental. He wrote down their names, not believing it would even work…

And when they did, it BROKE him.

We literally see him have a mental breakdown about taking two human lives, he’s terrified and disgusted at what he’s done. We even see how he talks himself out of it, how he clings so desperately to the only justifications he can find:

“But they were criminals” “They were harming others” “The world is better without them” “Someone had to do it” “Only I COULD do it”.

In his mind, the initial push to start doing what he does isn’t his own arrogance and ego… It’s the fact that he’s the only one capable, and more importantly, he’s the only one that’s already started doing it.

His hands are already soiled.

If he killed someone, it MUST’VE been for a good cause (otherwise how can he live with himself?).

If it was for a good cause, then it needed to be done.

If someone needed to do it, who better than the man who A. Can do it silently without being detected and B. Has already killed someone, and therefore is already ‘impure’.

He takes it on like shouldering a burden, it’s his own way of taking responsibility and dodging it all at once.

In fact I’d even go so far as to wager that one of the reasons he chose to make himself known might well have been that, subconsciously, he realized that he too would need to be stopped.

And yes, I hear your cries. “But Light was talking about cleaning up the world even before he found the Death Note!”

Well, yes.

And the manga goes explicitly out of its way to show that this is a perfectly reasonable line of thinking. Even the most mild mannered folk that desperately tried to stop Kira, however briefly, considered if he was actually doing more good than harm. That’s half the point of Matsuda as a character.

Hell, think of yourself. Have you never heard of a heinous, awful, unjustifiable crime and thought to yourself that that person ought to be killed? Ought to suffer, even?

I certainly have. I’m sure many of you have, aswell.

And let’s not forget that Light was the son of a police officer. Ever since he was young, he’s been exposed to stories of awful crimes, and he’s not heard very much about why people may commit those crimes. He may even have seen his father injured or hospitalised because of criminals.

Light definitely had some psychological issues stemming from his upbringing that pushed him over the edge and caused him to go as far as he did - that’s a given. If he didn’t, it wouldn’t be an interesting read.

But at the end of the day, it’s extremely easy to see how anyone thrown into Light’s situation could slip and fall into his ideology.

What do you mean I use my sexual charm?! What do you mean I use my sexual charm?!
