I was sitting in contemplative silence after running 110 miles. The cathedral was covered in Gothic architecture and the afternoon light was making its presence felt through the stained glass windows. The first frosty front of autumn has come through Southern England, making the conditions outside uncomfortable. It was cold and I was tired. Slight noises would echo in the corners and a dull hum of voices came and went – a small school group, old friends, a mother and her daughter. Despite the distractions I was content to just sit and be still.

Cordoba, Spain

Cathedral- Mosque of Cordoba- in 1236, Córdoba was captured by King Ferdinand III of Castile in the Reconquista, and the mosque was turned into a Catholic church. Alfonso X oversaw the construction of the Villaviciosa Chapel and the Royal Chapel within the mosque. The kings who followed added further Christian features, such as King Henry II rebuilding the chapel in the 14th century. The minaret of the mosque was also converted to the bell tower of the cathedral. It was adorned with Santiago de Compostela’s captured cathedral bells. The most significant alteration was the building of a Renaissance cathedral nave right in the middle of the expansive structure. The insertion was constructed by permission of Charles V, king of Castile and Aragon. The Great Mosque’s conversion to a Christian Catholic church, the Catedral de Córdoba, may have helped to preserve it when the Spanish Inquisition was most active.Artisans and architects continued to add to the existing structure until the late 18th century.

Tallinn, Estonia (2012)

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral- The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral crowns the hill of Toompea where the Estonian folk hero Kalevipoeg is said to have been buried according to a legend. (There are many such legendary burial places of him in Estonia.) The cathedral was built during the period of late 19th century Russification and was so disliked by many Estonians as a symbol of oppression that the Estonian authorities scheduled the cathedral for demolition in 1924, but the decision was never implemented due to lack of funds and the building’s massive construction. As the USSR was officially non-religious, many churches including this cathedral were left to decline. The church has been meticulously restored since Estonia regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

A mysterious leaden sarcophagus discovered in the bowels of Paris’ Notre-Dame cathedral after it was devastated by a fire will soon be opened and its secrets revealed, French archaeologists said Thursday.

The announcement came just a day before the third anniversary of the inferno that engulfed the 12th century Gothic landmark, which shocked the world and led to a massive reconstruction project.

During preparatory work to rebuild the church’s ancient spire last month, workers found the well-preserved sarcophagus buried 20 metres (65 feet) underground, lying among the brick pipes of a 19th century heating system.

But it is believed to be much older—possibly from the 14th century. Read more.

Minneapolis-St. Paul - Rachelle, Nicole, thanks for hosting and touristy tips! This set is another example of why I’m set on buying a nice DSLR camera soon. A little grainy at times and unfocused shot, which leaves our shot together Rachelle, out of the mix.

At any rate, the Basilica of St. Mary (1) in Minneapolis and the Cathedral of St. Paul (2) in St. Paul were designed by the same architect. The cathedrals website has some interesting text on its history, including that the high altar was designed by the same man who designed Grand Central Terminal in NYC. Cool huh?

I liked this shot of Rachelle looking out over the Stone Bridge back into Minneapolis (3). Thanks for having me and showing me around town!

Nicole (4), I know you hate this shot, but I think it’s great in its unstructured mess. It was so great seeing you again since you left New York and actually meeting your dad. Until next time right?

St Paul’s Cathedral sits on the tallest hill of London and still has quite the presence. We had a cool experience inside of seeing a stone mason chisel the name of the new bishop.
