Fred Wilson, Grey Area (Brown Version), 1993 brooklynmuseum

A recent article announced that archaeologists think they found Nefertiti’s tomb which reminded me of a contemporary work of art I had seen at the Brooklyn Museum. Artist Fred Wilson’s work is relevant to us today on so many levels.

“ Fred Wilson often appropriates art objects to explore issues of race, gender, class, politics, and aesthetics. Made up of the portrait heads of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti, Grey Area (Brown Version) refers to one of the most copied works of ancient civilization. The otherwise identical plaster effigies, which he purchased and painted, illustrate a value scale ranging in color from oatmeal to dark chocolate. Thus, Wilson raises, but does not answer, controversial questions about the racial identity of ancient Egyptians.

In both his provocative, groundbreaking installations in cultural institutions and in his studio work, Wilson encourages viewers to recognize how changes in context create changes in meaning. He has said of his practice, “I use beauty as a way of helping people to receive difficult or upsetting ideas. The topical issues are merely a vehicle for making one aware of one’s own perceptual shift -which is the real thrill.” - Gallery Label

The comparison of @Mistress_Ezada with Queen Nefertiti is appropriate. She is DIVINE! The MATRIARCH’s rule is absolute! She is The most beautiful GODDESS of our time!

• second most popular egyptian queen, behind cleopatra
• very sensitive to the contours of her face; very elegant face, long neck, mouth. 
• compared to a flower on a stem. very large head, address on a thin neck. 
• most likely idealized.

On December 6th, 1912, the famous bust of Nefertiti was discovered at Amarna, in the ruins of the workshop belonging to the sculptor Thutmose. The discovery was made by a team from the German Oriental Company, led by an archaeologist named  Ludwig Borchardt, who described the find in his diary:

Suddenly we had in our hands the most alive Egyptian artwork. You cannot describe it with words. You must see it

Queen Tiye’s head with a feathered crown from the Amarna Period (18th dynasty), yew wood, lapis lazuli, silver, gold and faience, ca. 1355 B.C, Egypt.

Tiye was the spouse of Amenhotep III, mother of Akhenaten and grandmother of Tutankhamun. She is represented with great realism and we can see her very distinctive features in the typical Amarnian style. 

This head has had two different hairstyles over time and they have been modified for unknown reasons. The original one was probably a khat,which was a head cloth worn by the nobility. We can still see traces of its ornaments on Tiye’s forehead where the golden uraeus were attached. The khat let the ears bare and that’s why the queen is depicted wearing golden earrings. Interestingly, the khat was actually reserved to goddesses: Tiye and Nefertiti are the only mortals to have ever been represented wearing one.

The second hairstyle is the one we can still see today. For unknown reasons the first hairstyle was destroyed and its remnants were covered by a linen wig that hid the earrings.

This head was probably meant to be attached to a body that has not been discovered.

Torso of Amarna Queen, most likely Nefertiti. Red quartzite, height: 29 cm. 

A pleated robe of linen with fringed border tied beneath her right breast and revealing her exaggeratedly voluptuous figure. Amarna Period, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, reign of Akhenaten, ca. 1353-1336 BC. Now in the Louvre.
